1/72 Tamiya Tornado F3

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have just started another kit for another group build on Facebook, this time the build is called #twinbrit and it is run by Tim Hedworth over at British Aviation in Scale, the group build runs until the 17th of March. So enough time for me to shoe one in before staring on my French Fancies entry!

The rules of the GB are simple it is anything british made or in british service that has two of something for example a Mosquito being twin engined, a Bae Hawk being a twin seater, etc..

I decided to go for Tamiya's rebox of Italeri's Tornado F3. I know it is older kit and has an issue or two but as far as I am aware it is proably the better ADV in 1/72 scale.

Here are the customary box, instructions and sprue photos:

The box showing a completed model:

Instructions seem simple with only 7 steps, but are in Japenese:

Kit decals look ok:

But I think I'll be using these from xtradecal instead:

Sprues, there are only two main sprues and one clear, should be a relatively quick build fingers crossed!

So there is the usual introduction to any of my builds, I'll be doing some videos of the build too.

Thanks for having a look.

Take care.

Hey guys,

I've started the kit and here is the first video of the build, in it I do a quick review of the kit and then start work on the cockpit.

Video has been removed by myself as not break forum policy

Thank you for looking.

Hello everyone,

So I have some photos to show the progress made on the Tonka.

The cockpit went together quite nicely:

The nose wheel well has some lovely detail:

Dry fitting the cockpit tub into fuselage:

I based the cockpit with Halfords grey primer then did the detail painting with Vallejo Model Colour:

I wanted to add some seat belts as I fell that the cockpit are a bit sparse:

And then painted them up:

I'm quite enjoying this build thus far. Once I have got some of my other ongoing kits going I'll be able to concentrate on it a bit more.

Hi everyone,

I've been carrying the work on this kit and I have some photos for you to look at. I am also currently uploading a video update to Youtube, once it is up I'll get a link on here for you.

So from where I left it last I have finished dressing up the cockpit and I put an oil wash on in there too. Then I got it to sit in the lower fuselage half. I also put the nose weight in before forgetting it!

I then turned my attention to some of the other bit such as the horizontal stabilisers:

The air intakes:

The vertical stabiliser:

The wing pylons:

And the wings themselves:

I then carried on the build on camera, that video as I said above is currently uploading but in the meanwhile here a few shots of where the build has got to tonight:

A couple of different views into the cockpit now that the fuselage is buttoned up:

A top view of the buttoned up Tonka:

And a bottom view too:

And I've nicked a couple of "Hindenburger" tanks off a Revell GR.1, I'm not sure if I'll use these of these smaller tanks that came with the kit:

That is all for tonight, once again thanks for looking and I hope to have the video up in the morning.

Making that look easy I remember my last one being a proper git to build

Well it is staring to put up a fight, the fuselage seem has got a step on the starboard side, I must have missed that when dry fitting. I did correct the port side by putting in a shim or two before buttoning up the Tonka.

Hmm i feel i should purchase one always liked the streamlined look of a stretched tornado.....

Bit like a stretched 42 as opposed to batch 1 or 2 type 42......im talking ships/gash barges here....sorry but ive always got to reference the RN somehow.

Mind you I had an F3 Raf exchange on 899 as a Divisional officer once....he was quite good

I'd say go for it, the kit needs a little work but it is enjoyable so far. I also like the lines of the ADV Tornado, just looks a bit more racy. Whereas the GR version looks more of a brute.

The type 42 was so dinky really, I remember seeing the docked at Portsmouth when I got the Ferry, I really liked the Type 22 which made the destroyer look tiny!

Evening chaps,

I have forgotten a few photos that I took prior to putting the Tonka into primer, so here they are:

26416727278_4bdc8c61c3_c.jpgIMG_1549 by Neal, on Flickr

I can't believe that Italeri/Tamiya could not pt these ejector pins somewhere else?!? Oh well filler and sanding it is then.

Giving myself some options for the fuel tanks, I haven't made my mind up yet as to which ones to hang under the wings.

Here she is masked up and all ready for primer application which you will have been able to see in the above video.

Thanks for all you feedback it is appreciated.

Hey guys and girls,

I think it is time for a little update on the Tonka. For those of you who have watched part 3 of the video build you will have seen the kit in primer. I have also taken some photos for you before the pain goes on:

Ordnance:

The next update will be a video update covering the painting of the bird, I’ll be using my interpretation of black basing as I find it works well on these monotonous greys.

That is all for now.

Hello guys,

So I’ve made some good progress on editing my videos so here is the next step of the painting process. I think the black basing seems to have worked quite well. I always struggle to pre-shade properly so d-find it easier to black base.

Anyway here is the video:

Looking good . What metallic paints are you using Neal.

Hi I use Vallejo Metal Color, they are acrylic and very forgiving. They can be airbrushed or use with a hairy stick straight from the bottle. I know that there are other paints that give a better metal look but for me they work just well.

Good afternoon,

Seeing that the forum won’t allow the posting of videos, I will have to revert to just posting photos, I have re-read the rules and will have to abide by them although I do find it a bit backwards that videography is not embraced to show one’s work, especially when Youtube now have changed things so small channels won’t be able to monetise their content anyway!

The top coat of Barley Grey or Camouflage Grey has gone down nicely, I do like using the Mr Hobby Paints with the Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinners.

I’m not too happy about the contrast in between the Light Aircraft Grey and the Barley Grey, hopefully once some clear coats are on it will make it more apparent:

26990481018_2187d65226_c.jpgUntitled by Neal, on Flickr

I then masked up for the application of the Medium Sea Grey on the nose cone and where the wings go into the fuselage on the sweep:

40152250474_65a870a21b_c.jpgUntitled by Neal, on Flickr

Then I started to get the decals on, thankfully there are not too many for this kit:

26990481098_00d34aea82_c.jpgUntitled by Neal, on Flickr

Thanks for following guys we are nearly there now, there is one week left on the GB so I need to get a shimmy on with it.

So I’ve been cracking on with this one, the #twinbrit group build was extended by one week thankfully!

So I got the ordnance painted up and decaled, ready for weathering:

A very dirty bird:

And now a rather nice looking Tonka after the clay wash:

Then I scratch built some FOD covers:

And then she was ready for some oil work:

There is light at the end of the tunnel! Nearly there.
