To answer some questions that have been asked about Xtradecal X48158

Biggles has pointed out an error but A77-116 was a typo and the decal is correct with A77-316

Hornet has said - also should note that A77-15 was named 'Elyane' not 'Elyana' as has been incorrectly reported many times.

There are several copies on the web of the same photo of the name on this aircraft but they are all too small to be certain. But every other reference I can find all give Elyana. Can you provide any proof that it was in fact Elyane, I want to get it correct rather than cause controversy.

Fortunately the decal has not gone to print so correcting anything is easy.

I suspect that the decals are from another source for the build up.

Marmaduke will have a camouflaged 74 sqn meteor on one of our sheets :)

Jonners

I would prefer 72 Sqn, and serials for WH453

And there's always

I have that sheet, thx for reminding me, it is 3 kits I will need now!

David,

No problem. I have a print of photo JK0613 which I purchased from the AWM many years ago. Attached is a copy plus part from a high res scan of the name, which one can see is 'Elyane'.

The name is Red with Black drop shadows, the portion between those 2 colours just being the Silver of the airframe.

Steve, thank you for the enlarged copy, I think you are right, it is Elyane. But it is easy to see why people have been reading the last letter as an A from the smaller picture.

Perfect timing, this is the sort of evidence we are always looking for and it usually appears the day after the decal is printed!

David,

The Forum has reduced the scan to fit on the page.

If you 'click' on the photo it will open in Photobucket. Then click on the magnifying glass with the plus sign above it in Photobucket to enlarge to it's full size which makes it a lot easier to see.

From there (once enlarged) you can right click on it and select 'save image' to save a copy. This is the only way to save an image that is hosted on Photobucket. If you try to do it from the Forum you will just get a blank image (been caught out that way many times).

For the profile art, note that this airframe at the time had the smaller style engine intakes and early canopy with the solid metal portion at the rear. Which raises a pertinent point, does the kit actually give you those options in the box....

Hi Steve the sprue shots in post 119 of this thread show both wide and narrow intakes, and though I can't find it now, I am sure a clear parts sprue image showed both canopy styles and the radio compass fairing. The shots are buried in one of many Nuremburg reports online, either primeportal or Ipms Germany.

Cheers,

Ken

I feel sorry for that poor erk having his head used in place of the aircraft ladder. Not very charitable by the pilot!

Yep, it's :coat: time again!

The logical next step of course would be a 1/48 Hunter

And then a Vampire, Venom and Swift. Just think of all those colourful squadron markings. Airfix could keep re-issuing the kits year after year with new markings. I think the tool will wear out before the marking options would.

Starting with a T.7 please!

Agree about the Vampire and Venom in both 1/72nd AND 1/48th, the Swift less so.

You're right about the marking options, especially the Vampire, few aircraft are as colourful.

Cough Cough Chaps

The next 48th issue has to be the Vampire T.11. That really could wear the tools out before the options are exhausted. The revenue would allow both a Hunter and Vampire single seater (at least).

Come on you know it makes sense.... :tooth:

Quote New 1/48th Scale Toolings – Scheme Updates

Staying with the popular 1/48th scale, we are pleased to be in a position to bring you updates on two new tooling releases in this larger scale, which are due for release later in the year. An integral part of any kit release, the decal and paint scheme selections are always of interest to the modeller, particularly as a great many people will build their kits straight from the box. The decal scheme selection is a very important aspect of any new model’s development and the Airfix team go to great lengths to ensure that they research interesting and accurate schemes for their models. There will always be a trade off with modellers who want a popular, recognised scheme for their latest project, as opposed to others who prefer to finish their models in more obscure, or esoteric schemes – Airfix will research their schemes exhaustively and try to produce decal sheets that appeal to as many modellers as possible.

Workbench edition 3 included the exclusive information that Airfix were already at the advanced stages of producing a 1/48th scale Gloster Meteor F.8, which was news that delighted a great many modellers. As we speed headlong towards a proposed May 2016 release, we can now bring you an update on the decal schemes that will be included in this much anticipated kit.

ImageP.jpgThe Gloster Meteor is already proving to be a popular addition to the range

Decal Option A

Gloster Meteor F.8, WL123/H, RAF No.111 Squadron, North Weald, Essex, 1954

As Britain’s first jet powered fighter and the only one to see service during the Second World War, the Gloster Meteor is not only an extremely important aircraft in the history of British aviation, but also one of the most attractive jets to see RAF service. The importance of the Meteor has been reflected in the level of interest that has been shown in this new model following its announcement, with a great many modellers confirming that this will be their first 1/48th scale modelling project. This first scheme marks a Meteor which served with No.111 Squadron and wears standard RAF day fighter camouflage, with the addition of a distinctive yellow tail. WL123 was to end its RAF service at No.5 Maintenance Unit at Kemble, where it was sold for scrap in July 1959.

ImageR.jpgMeteor WH364 is preserved at the Jet Age Museum, Gloucestershire

Decal option B

Gloster Meteor F.8, WH364/U, RAF No.85 Squadron, Binbrook, Lincolnshire, 1968

Wearing an attractive silver scheme, this Meteor served with RAF No.601 Squadron between 1952 and 1957, with the station flights at Safi, Takali and Idris. It went on to serve with No.85 Squadron at Binbrook, before being retired in 1971 – it then went on to serve as the gate guardian at RAF Kemble. Twenty years later, the aircraft was bought by Eddie and Paul Brown of Meteor Flight Ltd, but when their plans to return the aircraft to flight were abandoned, WH364 was bought by former Gloster test pilot and Jet Age Museum patron Peter Cadbury. The aircraft was restored and is now on display at the Jet Age Museum, Gloucestershire Airport, wearing its former RAF No.601 Squadron markings.

The new 1/48th scale Gloster Meteor F.8 (A09182) is due to be released in May 2016, but is available to be pre-ordered on the Airfix website now.

Does anybody know if this new release will have any of the Arab air forces? I think the Israelis and Egyptians used the F.8

The yearbook is just showing the 85 and 111 Sqn RAF markings. Whether they'll do a different boxing later I can't say but I'm pretty sure the after-market will quickly step in to fill the void.

Syria were an F.8 user too.

Thanks Wes. Hannants is good, but living across the pond with that minimum is tough. :(

I don't think the order minimum applies to decals - I've had single sheet orders sent to Australia without any problem.
