Yes, always bothered me, that little detail.

1/24 Tiger Moth is a cool idea. I'm up for a couple, along with the 1/24 Spitfire XIVe and N.A. T6/Harvard.

Hang a minute.  We need a 1/72nd scale Spitfire XIVe first.

I know Airfix have previously stated that they wont make a kit unless they have suitable drawings or can measure/scan an actual aircraft.

I think it would be good to build up a list of such aircraft so that at least we wont expect them from Airfix unless someone discovers a box of drawings in their granddad's shed.

So do we know of any aircraft that fit in this category?

Is the Sword kit no good? I have two in the stash, but haven't got around to them yet.

I'm building one at the moment (FRXIVe) and am a little disappointed with the fit which is going to require quite a bit of work.  Pity really as I recently built their LFXVI which went together really well.

Thanks! That's good to know. Both Sword Spits are up next on the workbench, so it's good to be forewarned!

Could just be me of course, which wouldn't be surprising given my usual slap dash approach combined with a drop in modelling mojo at the moment.  The problem seems to stem from the cockpit interior, making it difficult to close the fuselage halves and having the knock on affect of making the fuselage/wing join too tight.  Maybe if I'd spent a bit more time fettling the cockpit detail I could have avoided this.  Also one of the upper wing parts doesn't have enough chord so comes up short of the lower wing leading edge.

That's good to know. I'll have a dry fit session later today and see what needs done. They do look nice in the box though and always my favourite mark of Spit!

Airfix's lead researcher Simon Owen has written a piece for the latest edition of work bench about his recent visit to the heritage hangar at Biggin Hill & specifically on the Spitfire. In it he states " Our (Airfix's) first Spitfire kit was released in 1955 and I am sure that you will see more editions of this famous fighter coming from us here in Kent at some point."

Does this mean we can now all start furiously speculating that the next Spitfire kit will be something special (1/24 MkIX?), How soon it will be released & what they should have released instead? 😂

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the "No More Spitfires" brigade, I would very much love to see an updated mk. I in 1/24th to the standard of the Typhoon...

Hi gents, I don't think it's a 'hate' of Spitfires, Me.Bf.109's, Fw.190's, Mustang et al, it's just that all the model manufacturers HAVE to have (one or more) in their range, as in Western Europe

they are a known quantity and money maker, but it can get a little boring!

As for next year, hey, guess what? We'll get what Hornby/Airfix can afford to produce, maybe one kit, maybe ten, only time will tell.

On a slightly different tack, it makes me wonder WHY? Airfix still produce kits, after all, whatever it is, it collects so much flak, they can't do right for doing wrong.

Maybe they should start making parts for the automotive industry.........think BMW may need a new supplier

Unfortunately there's no MkXIV at Biggin Hill, or a MkVc as far as I know.

I wonder whether it is actually becoming quite difficult for Airfix to choose a subject these days, certainly in 1/72.  Thinking about it it is possible to acquire a kit of just about every British produced aircraft ever built, no matter how obscure, in one form or another, whether that be from a mainstream manufacturer or a short run or resin kit.  I would imagine the same applies for US, French and Soviet aircraft and I know it applies to WW2 Luftwaffe.  I've been harping on about a two-stage Merlin Mosquito on this thread, and I'd love to see one, but it is possible to build one using after market parts without Airfix releasing a new tool.  We even have a new Buccaneer on the way.  The one area that seems to be slightly less well represented, certainly with mainstream manufacturers, is the between the wars period.  Maybe Airfix will take inspiration from that era.  Having said that I don't expect to see a Handley Page Hinaidi any time soon (then again, with Valom around who knows).

If Airfix are still replacing old 1/72 moulds then there are obvious gaps. Off the top of my head and confining myself to the smaller stuff, Harvard IIB, P-38, P-47, Lysander, Storch and Yak 9. There are plenty around to Lidar.

There are actually quite a few US types not in kit form in any scale. Most are pre-war that only an enthusiast like myself would want. I only expect they’ll either be resin, very limited run, or scratch built. Likely the latter.
