Apart from Armstrong himself, he was probably the biggest name of the twelve Moonwalkers. I attended a lecture by him on 4 July 2000 (I remember the date because the man introducing him pointed out that he had given up his Independence Day holiday) and he came over as a thoroughly charming man.
