It's been a while but I finally managed to set aside some time for the Camel.

Trial fitting the lower wings required lots of careful paint removal and fettling to get all the parts cleaned and aligned just right.

I elected to glue them prior to painting to avoid any future issues with fit.

I may regret the decision when it comes to masking the wood and alu finishes but think it's preferable to risking damaging the finish during assembly.

Primer tomorrow?

Time will tell!

So... It's been a  while.

I lost my modelling mojo there for a while, got distracted by some things, overwhelmed by others, but back now and enthusiastic to move this kite along.

At this stage I'm just about ready for masking and paint.

The approach I'm thinking of is

Lower surfaces first:

Shoot on light coat, mask ribs, mist on darker coat, mask in prep for upper surfaces.

Upper surfaces next:

Shoot on light PC10 coat, mask ribs, mist on darker PC10 coat

Mask PC10 surfaces and shoot on the dark wood panels around the cockpit.

Mask wood surfaces and finally shoot on Alu around the cowl.

Then unmask everything and hope I haven't ruined it all.

Maybe I'm overcomplicating it? :D

Fill, sand, prime, fill, sand, prime and… paint.

CDL shot on the lower surfaces and rib tapes masked

Then a patchy darker coat... hopefully the weathering will tone down the contrast.

It's been sealed with a coat of Mr Super Clear so I should be able to mask it and move to the upper surfaces tomorrow.

In the meantime, this is my daughters P47 ThunderEgg? EggBolt? I dunno… 🤔

I envy her 6 year old eyes and steady hands; her gluing in neater than mine!

This is where I left it for tonight.

I need to sort out a more appropriately sized stand to keep this safe in storage, otherwise that tailskid isn't going to last long.

Try using masking tape to hold a piece of scrap sponge to the bottom of the fuselage at the tail skid.

I've snapped too many tail skids in the past and doing this stops it,

Thanks Mike.

I'll take a look around and see what I can find.

There's bound to be some surplus foam packaging around here somewhere.

We're off for a few days holidays tomorrow so this is probably my last progress report for a week or so.

The PC-10 is on and I'm much happier with the upper surfaces than the lower surfaces.

I shot on a mix of 80% PC-10 and 20% CDL, then masked the ribs with 1mm tape before shooting on a light coat of straight PC-10.

I then removed the masking and misted on a patchy coat of PC-10. The result is much more satisfactory than the underside.

The camera has exaggerated the effect as it's far more subtle to the naked eye in reality.
There's also more brown in the PC-10 mix than shows in the photo.

When I get back I'll tackle the wood around the cockpit.

Shock revelation - you go through a LOT more paint and masking tape in 1/32 vs 1/72 :D

Well this evening was a bit of a mixed bag.

First up I decided to fettle a couple of the areas on the PC-10 that I wasn't happy with.

I reckoned I could get away with doing this by brush to avoid masking.

Apparently not!

The MRP paint that went on so beautifully by airbrush was not so successful by brush and my gentle and careful strokes with a soft brush ended up removing the underlying airbrushed coat.

Not a disaster by any means as I stopped immediately before any serious damage was done but I'll now have to wait for it to dry, carefully sand, mask and airbrush the areas affected.

Lesson learned! 🤨

The second part of the evening was a tad more successful and the BR.1 is now assembled and painted.

It'll need a wash and a little engine grime but otherwise it's finished and I'm pretty happy with it.

I've also decided that the rib masking on the undersurfaces (post 31) was too wide so I'll repaint them.

I could leave them as is but I'd probably regret not doing a more subtle job. 😖

The PC-10 is sorted, next to redo the CDL ribs on the underside.

Some daylight pics since the sun was shining at lunch time.

Colours are:
Fuselage: MRP PC-10 (late)

Cockpit Wood: Tamiya XF-59 + Raw Umber oils

Engine Cowl: Tamiya XF-82 Ocean Grey 2

I had to fight hard against my desire to paint the nose and cowl in a shiny aluminium but I reckon the dull pained grey is more likely for a ship based Camel.

Well it's taken a few tries but I'm finally happy enough with the paint.

Couldn't resist a little mock up with the engine cowl and stabilisers in place.

Time to push on with it now - Gloss and decals next.

My daughter has been a little under the weather so we've progressed her little egg plane to the point where she can decal it while I'm doing the Camel.

I heartily recommend these for anyone with a 6-8 year old who wants to give a build a go.

There's not too many parts, it goes together easily and it's robust enough to handle a bit of clumsiness.

In fact, the only breakage we've had was down to me! 😖

This scheme was particularly suitable as there was minimal masking involved, most parts being just a single colour.

Paint and decals are coming along now.

I finished the canvas areas in semi-gloss and left the wood areas gloss.
The PC-10 still looks a bit shiny to me so it may yet get a coat of clear matt.

I also decided to go with a BSG painted finish on the cowling rather than aluminium as I reckoned that seemed more in keeping with the photos I've seen.

I've painted up the next batch of small parts that'll be needed and the plan is to complete as much detailing and pre-rigging as possible before fitting the top wing.

Undercarriage and prop will be fitted last to minimise the chances of accidental damage.

Let there be string, and lo, there was string!

48924528602_26105b3df9_c.jpg

I was surprised at how long this took me.
I drilled .3mm holes in the controls and used a .4mm drill bit to twist some copper wire eyelets for the guides.

I'm crossing my fingers that the control horns survive the remaining construction - they feel very vulnerable.
