Forgotten how many interesting airlines and types passed through Gatwick around 40 years ago. Enjoy. First, some gatwick ones. All taken up to the mid 1070's/.Some with my then new Zenit E and a few (the smaller square ones) with my Instamatic. Tupolev TU-134 LZ-TUK Balkan Bulgarian. Viscount G-ARGR in Turkish carrier Bursa Hava Yollari colours (partial Alidair too!!) Note the IAS DC-8 freighter at back. That tree line, looking west and slightly north is all gone and part of the North Terminal area. Comet in foreground G-BDIT is ex RAF. Not sure about the others visible. Boeing 707 N5772T Ex TWA. with Freight operator Tradewinds. The colour was a darkish blue. Martinair DC-10. PH-MBP C# CAF C-130E and Intra DC-3 landing. D-AMAS BAC 1-11. DM-SCX(?) at Gatwick. A few of these operated here as well as Il-18 and occasionally an IL-62. Canadian flights to LGW were very regular but not so much Air Canada whose DC-8 63 you see here. Mostly they were CAF, Pacific Western, Wardair and CP-Air HB-IBS Heathrow... B737-200 Heathrow Aer Lingus 737. I think thiw was a leased one from some where...? Note the Tridents... one with the newer BA colours starting to appear. VT-39 Sabreliner. I do like those Dan Air Comet tails, I've long been a Dan Air fan, no reason other than I liked the livery. have you any full ones of them? Steve. Hi Paul, another set of classic photo's, thanks for posting them. Nowadays it seems to be mainly Ryanair 737-800s and EasyJet A319s, much of the variety - and interest in spotting - has gone. I always used to like the Soviet stuff, especially the Tu-134's with the 'obsevation/navigators' clear nose cone. Me too, Mike. Not sure if I can help, but a guess might be; AEC Matador unit with a low profile aircraft refueling tanker, and some kind of Ford tractor, fitted with large wheels on each corner for aircraft towing (possibly stating the obvious). I too have fond memories of spotting at Gatwick and Heathrow in the 70's. Must correct you about the Air Ceylon behind the Sabreliner though, I think you'll find it's an Air Algerie 737. I reckon you're right. Thanks. I used to cycle around Heathrow on my bike back in the 70's. So it's all very familiar to me. I remember when there was a little wooden fence around the perimeter, and you could sit and watch the BOAC VC.10's rolling in with their noses held up. We used to call those early 737's 'pigs' which I feel was quite appropriate, given how short and fat they look. Karrier for the airstairs and the fuel tanker is definitely an AEC Ergomatic cab, basically the same cab for AEC, Albion and Leyland trucks of the 60’s & 70’s). But I did get a few flights from LGW courtesy Rays Air Travels on local one hour flights. I have found my pics of my flight in a DC-^. The Belgian one OO-IFA. Will do those pics next.
