I found these that may be of interest to many airliner fans here. I got quite excited at discovering these. Forgotten how many interesting airlines and types passed through Gatwick around 40 years ago. Enjoy.

First, some gatwick ones. All taken up to the mid 1070's/.Some with my then new Zenit E and a few (the smaller square ones) with my Instamatic.

DM-SCX(?) at Gatwick. A few of these operated here as well as Il-18 and occasionally an IL-62.

Canadian flights to LGW were very regular but not so much Air Canada whose DC-8 63 you see here. Mostly they were CAF, Pacific Western, Wardair and CP-Air

Brilliant, a lovely nostalgia kick in those. I do like those Dan Air Comet tails, I've long been a Dan Air fan, no reason other than I liked the livery. have you any full ones of them?

Steve.

Thanks Steve.  Im sure I can come up with some. I'll have a root through. But I do have hundreds more slide and neg pics to share but over time.

Hi Paul,

another set of classic photo's, thanks for posting them.  I am always interested in the ground service vehicles at airports and wonder if anyone can identify the refueller, next to the DC-10; also the tractor unit in the foreground of the Aer Lingus 737?

cheers

Mike

Fantastic - thanks for posting !

Really brings back the memories.  So many different aircraft types and so many varied liveries.  Nowadays it seems to be mainly Ryanair 737-800s and EasyJet A319s, much of the variety - and interest in spotting - has gone.

Best wishes

Don

Great pics Paul. Always love to see your old photos. I always used to like the Soviet stuff, especially the Tu-134's with the 'obsevation/navigators' clear nose cone. Very Cold War.

Me too, Mike. Not sure if I can help, but a guess might be; AEC Matador unit with a low profile aircraft refueling tanker, and some kind of Ford tractor, fitted with large wheels on each corner for aircraft towing (possibly stating the obvious).

I Spy several Mk.1 Transit vans and a Rover P4 (I think?). I feel I should recognise the Aer Lingus airstairs, but it escapes me.

As predicted, I was not much help!

My revised guess is AEC Mammoth Major............

Well, it starts with an M..

Thanks for posting these pics Paul, what a great collection! I too have fond memories of spotting at Gatwick and Heathrow in the 70's.

Must correct you about the Air Ceylon behind the Sabreliner though, I think you'll find it's an Air Algerie 737.

Cheers,

Ian

Yes; You are right,  I did think the fin was a bit small along the B720/707.

Thanks for all your comments Will have a few more to post time to time.

Smudge, do you think they're on a Karrier Bantam chassis?

Ha, yes. That's the one I was trying to think of! I reckon you're right.

Thanks.

I used to cycle around Heathrow on my bike back in the 70's. So it's all very familiar to me. I remember when there was a little wooden fence around the perimeter, and you could sit and watch the BOAC VC.10's rolling in with their noses held up. We used to call those early 737's 'pigs' which I feel was quite appropriate, given how short and fat they look. The roof of the Queens building was popular, check out all the people up there.

Looks like a Jensen next to the Rover P4. Karrier for the airstairs and the fuel tanker is definitely an AEC Ergomatic cab, basically the same cab for AEC, Albion and Leyland trucks of the 60’s & 70’s). Looks like an AEC, but with a flatter cab roof than standard vehicles?

Yes, great times - Tu-104s, Tu-134s, IL-18s (many of them), IL-62s, Tu-154s, CL-44s and Britannias, etc ..... nice memories :)

A nice shot of HB-IBS, Paul. I flew her LGW-BSL-LGW at Easter 1975, when I took a LAAS Swiss weekend arojnd the airfields. :)...

Martin

Greta trip. I never got to go on any of the LAAs trips. But I did get a few flights from LGW courtesy Rays Air Travels on local one hour flights. I have found my pics of my flight in a DC-^. The Belgian one OO-IFA. Will do those pics next.
