1/72 DH-100 Vampire FB52 - good to build a Swiss Mk6?

Hi guys,

I want to build a Swiss Air force DH-100 Vampire Mk6 and think the Special Hobby Vampires looks quite good. I could get hold of an FB52.

Am I right assuming that the FB52 can be build without any changes - at least in 1/72 - into a Mk6 since both are export versions of the Mk5?

I know that AZ Models does make a 1/72 Mk6 of the Swiss air force but think it doesn't look as good as the Special Hobby kit.

Looking forward to hear from you Vampire specialists.

Cheers,

 Michae

The Special Hobby kit can happily recreate the early FB.6. The Swiss Vampire was essentially an FB.5 with minor alterations such as radio fit etc. There were no major external differences of note. Later on many FB.6s received the extended nose and/or ejection seats, neither of which are included in the SH kit.

Thanks mate - thats what I thought as well.  I am aware of it then being an early Mk6 without the Pinocchio nose. For this, I will build another one using the AZ-Model Mk.6 kit. Unfortunately it's not the best kit in terms of accurate shape. Would be cool to get a Special Hobby version with the right nose and the ejection seat.

do you know if the ejection seats came together with the new nose? Or differently asked, where there standard nose Mk.6 with ejection seats?

happy new year to you,

Cheers,

Michael

Happy new year to you as well, Michael.

Ejection seats were fitted from 1960. Seemingly there was legislation passed by the Federal government in that year requiring all Swiss Air Force jets to be equipped, and I believe it was the Martin-Baker Mk.3 seat that was used. All of the Swiss T.55s were fitted with bang seats before delivery.

With regard to the 'orrible pointy nose, sixty FB.6s were fitted with UHF radios, a transponder and blind flying equipment taken from grounded Venoms and installed in the new nose during the late 1970s.

I have to admit that I wonder why Special Hobby have never included the pointy nose.

Hope you had a good start into 2018.

Thanks for all these valuable information.

The pointy nose wasn't that horrible - gives it a speedy look.

Really hope we will see a Special Hobby Pinocchio nose Mk.6 one day.

Cheers,

Michael

You won't find much sympathy with that point of view around here you know?

Now where did I put my flaming torches and pitchforks? :hmmm:

I for one though, wouldn't mind doing an FB.6 for curiosity value and completeness (although in any line up of Vampires, all the other Vampires would be pointing at it and calling it names), I've heard the A-Model kit is out of scale and I really don't fancy shelling out just to get the nose.

Hhmm - Britmodeller folks are not having a preference for the pointy nose version?! How it comes? 😉 But since we are neutral, lets say all have nice noses - while some have a nicer one 😉

Got the A Model kit - thought about trying to use the pointy nose on a Special Hobby kit. No idea if I could manage to get this done without messing up both kits. But worth a try. Result might be published one day here at BM - to pleases all the pointy nose lovers 😉

Cheers,

Michael
