Hi.

Santa dropped this on my doorstep. :yahoo:

And I've been drooling over it all Christmas.

But yesterday as I was waiting for the Junior World Championship Ice hockey tournament to start I somehow opened up one small bag and started to prime the engine parts.

So I guess I can say that this build officially started.
I'll continue with the massive engines tonight...

To be continued...

Engines, intakes and cockpit has been primed with humbrol 140 so that AKANs acrylics has something to grip on to.

I've started to paint green on the "hot" parts of the exhausts.

The wheels looks a little bland, so I'll order some resin replacements from Eduard.
I'll also have to look through my growing collection of AKAN paints to see that I have all the colours I need for this build.

Hi.

The build of my MiG-31 continues, and I've made some small progress.
I've been trawling the internet and found some detailing in the gear bays that I'd like to try and make on my build.

A bit more interesting than just aluminium paint.

I've also started on the massive underside.
39608435471_8ec71160b5_h.jpg005 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr
I've glued the aft R-33 missile bays in place, and the gun pod is also glued to the fuselage.
The instructions states that the next step is some smaller wheel bay covers should be glued in place.
I don't like to glue them in place at this early stage, so I'll have to check if it'll be possible to add them at a later stage.

The main landing gear bays are integral with the air intakes.

I've glued one part to the intakes and I've never experienced such fine tolerances.
All edges have to be scraped free from paint, otherwise the parts it will not fit.

Did I say that the MiG-31 is massive?
Here are the engines without exhaust and air intakes together with a MiG-15 in the same scale.

Massive indeed. :D

I must admit that I'm rather pleased with these.
It's my first attempt with Tamiya panel line colours.

And after that I could glue everything into the fuselage.

Not the easiest thing I've done.
The tolerances are so small I had to scrape all the glue surfaces to get the parts in place.
My plan for tonight is to get the nosegear bay in place, and after that glue the wings to the fuselage.

To be continued.....

She's lookin good Marlin! Good job on picking up the metal gear! I recently built this exact same kit (actually still under construction) and I didnt think ahead and used the kit gear....BIG MISTAKE!!! I had the thing all set and ready and when I placed her on her legs, after a day and a half, both of the main gear were warped terribly! I have since removed the kit plastic gear and bought some metal gear from Scale Aircraft Conversions to get some support. I am hoping to have these soon so I can complete mine. Other than the gear, the kit does go together wonderfully and only had a couple of very small areas where I needed to use filler.

Thanks jelliott523. :D

I actually bought the metal gear for the pitot tube. :D
But I'm glad I did.

And speaking of the nosegear, it's now in place.

Looks very sturdy, even though I don't like to add them this early in a build.

I've also started on the cockpit.

Lots of fine details.

And the last of the sub assemblies, the fins, have also been glued together.

I've not yet glued the belly strakes in place.
I actually found some mould marks that has to be delt with. :D

Hi.

I've had a rather productive weekend.
I've glued the wing in place.
38932325335_fee24749bb_h.jpg025 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr
I had to use about every clamp I got to get a secure fit.

The cockpit is done.

I actually used the kit decals, and it turned out much better than I expected.

I found some sink marks on the nose section that I had to deal with.

This is the first ones I've found on this kit.

The now matt coated cockpit is ready for insertion into the nose section.

And that is how far I've come.
My plan for tonight is to get the cockpit and nose section in place.

Hi.
I've now come to the painting stage.
The last parts hade been glued to the fuselage, and one layer of primer in for of Humbrol 140 has been laid.

And after that I came down with something my stomach definitly didn't like. :(
So I've not done anything more on the Mig the last couple of days

Hi.

I've now come to the conclusion that this will be an early MiG-31 "sans suffix" in Soviet markings.
That way I can build the BM version in Russian markings and get the maximum difference between them.
So no inflight refueling probe on this one.

A bit of sanding and it's almost gone.
25146071477_78918be56c_h.jpg033 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr
I'll have to find some picture of the nose area to see if I have to make some new panel lines.

To be continued.....

Hi,
The Olympics has started and so has my vaccation.
I like to watch the Olympics and has since 1984 taken time off work to watch it.
So now I have a fortnight of watching the Olympics and building my model infront of me.

Yesterday the postman dropped of my new batch of AKAN colours from Finland.

So now I've been able to continue painting my MiG-31
