Airfix 1/72 Nimrod MR.2

Recommended Posts

My latest effort and one that has been in the loft for a year or two. Not the easiest kit but goes together fairly quickly. Some of the instructions were a bit vague and sometimes plain wrong and the kit decals are pretty poor. The model is finished as XV233 of 42Sqn as it appeared in 1998. Painted with Xtracrylix Hemp and Light Aircraft Grey and Model Alliance decals Part III.

You won't get them in Satin. You need a gloss finish to decal on anyway, then finish off with a satin varnish. Mine was matt and given a few coats of clear to gloss for decals. Finished with a light coat of Games Workshop Purity Seal. The easiest way was my answer to your original paint question using Halfords aerosols.

Looks the part. You don't see many of these completed.

As already noted, there don't seem to have been many built after the initial hype when Airfix released it.  You've made a tidy job of yours, and the Model Alliance decals were definitely the right way to go.

Fantastic! Did you use spray paints? I've got three Nimrods to make but can't find the right spray colours in satin.

Halfords do a Khaki in their camouflage range which I have read is a very good likeness to Hemp, together with their racking grey for the LAG, haven't tried it myself yet, future project in the making!!!!!
