GordonD
We've lost another former astronaut, something that will become more and more common as time goes on... Bruce McCandless, the first man to make an untethered EVA, has died aged 80. Photos of him testing the Manned Maneuvering Unit on STS-41B are amongst the most iconic of the Space Age, right up there with Apollo 8's Earthrise and Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface. He later flew on STS-31, which deployed the Hubble Space Telescope, and clocked up 13 days and 31 minutes flight time over his two missions. McCandless was the CAPCOM at Mission Control during the Apollo 11 Moonwalk. 1
Eric Mc
Sad. Yes, that's Bruce's voice we hear talking to Armstrong and Collins during their famous moonwalk.

HMSLion
Damn. You don't think of Shuttle astronauts as being that old.

general melchett
Very sad news, RIP a true hero. A great shot of him testing the first Parker-Knoll in space, such a laid back guy...

Quite a few Shuttle era astronauts have passed away over the years. Apart from the 14 killed in the two Shuttle disasters, I can think of – Sally Ride Hank Hartsfield Bob Overmeyer (killed in an accident testing a light aircraft) Paul Weitz (only a few weeks ago) Piers Sellers Gordon Fullerton Bill Pogue Dale Gardner
