SW The Last Jedi Spoiler/Discussion Thread

Just thought I'd start a thread for discussing the latest SW flick whilst it's still fresh in my mind. Obviously this thread will contain spoilers so I'll leave space to protect the innocent (from the dreaded hover spoil!).

Spoiler

So, I think this is the first time I've ever come out of a SW flick feeling disappointed. Tonally I'm not sure what the last two and a bit hours were, but they sure as shoe-shine weren't very SW'y. Anyway, these things are best done in bullet-points for easier digestion:

Likes

  • The New bombers were cool
  • I still like Ren and think he's a good character
  • I liked the reveal of Rey's parents
  • I enjoyed the space combat
  • Didn't hate the Porgs
  • Rey and Ren's Force chats, and how they were manipulated by Snoke
  • Admiral Holdo
  • Gross space milk

Dislikes

  • That bit with Leia, we all know she's force sensitive but...c'mon. Also, considering the sad passing of Carrie Fisher that would have been a perfect and impactful way of killing off the character
  • Canto Bight was just....no
  • Crait was underutilised considering how much of the marketing focussed on it
  • Snoke's death. He was built up to be an interesting character with both in TFA and the new Expanded Universe and that was wasted
  • The majority of the dialogue, especially the forced-funnies ("chrome dome") just didn't sit right
  • Fin is still not a great character
  • That bit where Admiral Holdo rams the Mon Calimari cruiser into Snoke's flagship, visually impressive but at odds with how the universe works
  • Rose, and her kiss with Fin
  • Admiral Ackbar's death barely being a thing
  • Luke's death was a bit 'meh'
  • Whatever character Benicio Del Toro was playing, very much "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal" yawn
  • BB-8...basically just everything that he does in the film
  • Most of the jokes.

So overall not a very positive take. I'll happily watch it again (TFA took a couple of attempts and there's still things I'm not keen on, bu there's things I don't like about every SW film) but my main take away is that this is a film that doesn't feel like SW, made by someone who doesn't understand the setting. I don't think the sequels are dead, but I think this is a misstep and Rian Johnson should be forever kept away from the franchise, as he doesn't have the experience or ability to handle a project of this magnitude. I think it will always be a divisive film, the critics seem to mostly like it but as a stand alone film I think it lack the pomp and bombast one would expect from the series which will turn off the casual viewer, and it does so many strange things with the setting and characters that the more 'hardcore' like myself may (and in may case do) find had to swallow. Most of all it is a film that didn't actually feel, despite sharing the same characters and (supposedly) setting, like a continuation of the story of TFA and what came before and is a real poster boy for why a lack of consistent vision is a bad thing. Abrams is back for Ep IX, but he's got a hell of a hole to dig himself out of.

Thanks. Don't go in there very often.

Edited to add: the thread mentioned is a non-spoiler thread, Ie. No one's able to back up their statements for fear of spoiling those that haven't yet seen it. For that reason I think this thread can stand alone.

I was of the understanding that Lucas had 'written it all out in his notebook when he was 12' (or whatever). If that's so (and I never believed that it was), how can the presequels (or whatever they're called) be so... crap, not to mention the way that most of them don't seem to fit the universe that they're set in.

I won't be wasting my time or money on this.

I think he's claimed similar things in the past, but the fact that there's big holes in the story between ANH and Empire kind of puts paid to his bluster.

I think the word you are seeking is " Prequel"?. No, they weren't marvellous. Helped in no small way by appalling scripts and some very wooden 'acting"- especially from Hayden Christensen who, had all the charisma of a plank!

I won't be wasting £12 on a cinema ticket but, I won't condemn the film unti I see it!😁. Be out on rent on Netflix before long. That's good enough for me!!😁. If it's bad then I ain't lost much!

I once saw a reviewer say that they had seen more emotion from someone choosing between diet and regular coke then when Anakin chose the dark side.

:lol:. Considering this was a tragic tale of a good man's descent to evil, he came across like a whiny, snarly teenage brat throwing a tantrum!!. Zero credibility. The one film I simply refuse to watch is the Return of the Jedi. Why? Because it descended into pure and utter farce because of those stupid little teddy bears!! I HATE EWOKS!!. Seriously though, it was a damn good action movie until that battle in the forest of Endor reduced it (in my view anyway) to the level of comedy.

Quite agree Allan. They had three whole feature films to explain how child prodigy descends to embodiment of evil and ended up with the pivotal event appearing to be a juvenile tantrum over the equivalent of not being made captain of the school football team when he wanted it. Not the best effort.

I have to say I saw the new film yesterday and enjoyed it a lot but I do just enjoy them as films and don't get too immersed in the canon per se,  so other's milage may differ.

As a long time SW fan I have to say I enjoyed it.

thought it developed Rey and Ren’s characters well from TFA, liked the reveal about Rey’s parents.  Vehicles were good and as I expected them to be for an all conquering empire and on its last legs resistance.  Luke’s passing, didn’t see it as a death, was about right for me.

I agree about the Leia space walk and Finn’s trip to the casino seemed as if it was just something for him to do.  The code breaker, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him again in Ep IX.

I do find that trying to over analys a film can spoil it, at the end of the day they are the to entertain and I for one left the cinema entertained.

If you get a chance, I would watch some of the deleted scenes from the prequels. HC isn't a bad actor by any stretch, but Lucas is a woeful director (he's at his best in a production capacity) who sometimes manages to get good performances out of his cast in spite of his interference. Rian Johnson is also not a great director, with his only box office venture previous to this (Looper) being a critical and commercial failure maybe that's why Disney picked him. Or, more likely, the House of Maus doesn't care because you can slap the SW license on anything and it will make money.

Well Im going this Afternoon. As Ive seen the original almost 1000 times i guess im a bit of a SW Nut. I agree the Prequels were not the best. I was quite dissapointed more in yoda ( Green blob of CGI jello ) than Hayden Christensens performance. Im not looking Forward to the Porg’s, and I never was a fan of ewoks. Im definitely looking forward to the new ships though particularly what looks like a B-wing bomber ?

It’s a good movie, I enjoyed it and my kids enjoyed it. It’s a sci-fi space opera in the ilk of the original trilogy. Over analysis of it and apportioning physical science fact to it ultimately leads to disappointment amongst Adults...

I found it to be entertaining, my disbelief was suspended for the whole movie and it was funny in places. My youngest spent the whole evening after the movie reenacting the film and I see BB-8 has made a reappearance out of the toy cupboard.

There were also cool space battles, lightsaber duels, heaps of aliens and big ‘imperial’ ships and a good dose of force use.

Watch it enjoy it just don’t try and  over analyse it..

The imperial Dreadnought looked an awful lot like a Northrop flying wing. And the bombers had B17 style turrets.

I really liked the bombers, though the whole gravity drop thing was a bit silly though; But SW has never had consistancy when it comes to its physics so it gets a pass. I wonder how they land?

I thought about the bombers. I dont think they were gravity bombs as there would be no gravity generated externally on a Star destroyer. Id say in the vacuum of space a magnetic bomb would likely be the best way to do this. Thats my humble opinion

You're probably right. Though I could be nit-picky and point out that any body with mass (and therefore energy) generates a force of gravity.

Uh, Rian Johnson previously wrote and directed the excellent film Brick, which I highly recommend.

It’s Science Fiction that’s not constrained by the laws of physics as we know them. If you start apportioning our reality onto Starwars then all sorts of plot holes and nonsensical stuff will appear.

Lots of Sci-fi does a really great job of representing our known physics into a sci-fi setting.

Starwars is is not that genre of Sci-Fi and never had been... It’s really about having a relatively simple good v evil, big guy v little guy plot interspersed with action scenes and fantastical scenarios where the good guy generally wins and the opportunity to market the movie to extract money at every opportunity exists.....
