Redshift
Slow progress recently, but I've managed to add the anchor winch and mooring bollards
Redshift
Next was some funnel fettling and fumbling Not happy with the result, so I'm going to try carving one from solid.
Bandsaw Steve
Yep - just get some bass wood or something and carve it out. A much simpler way to go sometimes! 👍
Redshift
Thanks for the tip about bass wood Mr Bandsaw, its good stuff. I was going to use either balsa or some mystery wood from the corner of the garage. Anyway, how to make a funnel: first select a suitable lump of lumber Then remove all the bits That don't look like a funnel

Redshift
Ok, wisdom of the forum time. Window frames : option (a) plastic (left) or (b) wood (right)?
GrantGoodale
Personally - I like the wood
Courageous
For effect and neatness, wood. Stuart
Redshift
Yeah, it was a bit of a daft question really. I was just feeling a bit lazy, the plastic one took two seconds to push into the opening, the wooden one has eight parts to it and caused much cursing and a bit of bleeding. Oh well, we suffer for our art! 1
Bandsaw Steve
Sorry Redshift but I must also vote for wood. Pleased to see you had success carving the funnel. People often seem to think carving is beyond them but it’s not that difficult and is often a highly practical method. I generally avoid carving balsa though and I suspect that’s what many use on their first try which might be why they get discouraged. There are numerous better woods available- basswood being the best known.
Redshift
Yup, wood it is. Its also more satisfying knowing I've created something from nothing rather than just cutting out a plastic shape. Things I learned from the wood carving exercise. Scalpels are sharp A little blood goes a long way Its easier to take wood off than put it back on Many small cuts are better than one big cut A micro plane is essential Always have another block of wood as a spare You can never have enough swear words
Bandsaw Steve
Hmmmm... perhaps I should look into getting a micro-plane. 🤔

Twobad
In many ways it's nice to see a build that is non-plastic for a change. A nice result and a good looking model.
