Sherman Firefly, Normandy.

Recommended Posts

Sherman Firefly Diorama; finished at last! Ever get one of those projects where you think you'll never end?
Anyway, based on an incident from Ken Tout's book 'Tank!', (highly recommended), where three Germans who hadn't had rations for days surrendered on the promise of army biscuits; they must have been desperate. Bocage country, Normandy, July 1944.
Not completely happy, but it was either this or my sanity.

  • Brasso27 changed the title to Sherman Firefly, Normandy.

Nice finish on the Firefly, and the figures are exceptional. I've just got one nitpick. I read this on another forum, written by the well known author and historian Dick Taylor. Stowage gear wouldn't have been carried on the sides of the tank in Normandy because of the terrain. In the bocage, where often vehicles would have been pushing through hedgerows, (as you have depicted well in this dio), anything hanging from the sides was in danger of being ripped off. Obviously, this wasn't a problem in the desert where you see many photos of tanks carrying gear in this way. But if you have photos that prove that wrong, then I'll hold up my hands.

Apart from that, nice one.

No, I'd say you're entirely correct. I was aware of that doing the vehicle but I went ahead anyway as I liked the effect. Some units even went as far as removing sand shields and welding them to the rear hull to create extra stowage space.
