1/72 USN 80' Elco PT Boat with some mods

I have that kit in front of me so I know just how small that amazing detail is. Excellent work John,

I'm researching US PT RON 34. 80 ft Elco boats in USN grey scheme they were used for minesweeper escort, e-boat interdiction and a picket line around the channel islands. They used an airfoil shaped wind deflector over the bridge. I'm still looking for decent pics of that.

Your great work has started me on this deep dive and I'm enjoying the ride,

Next up, detailing the chart house roof.

In addition to the life float, a horn & antenna were located on the Elco's roof.

I cut out the horn that was molded Revell kit's chart house roof.

The horn cut-out was filed & sanded to make a full round horn shape, & then glued the horn in place on the roof.

The antennae was made using round plastic rod formed create a ring, stretched plastic sprue for the mounting brackets, drilled round plastic rod for additional brackets, and steel wire for the antenna mast.

Here's look at the completed parts mounted on the chart house roof before painting.

Now, I have a question for those looking in.  What is the purpose of the above chart house antenna?  I'll share the answer in my next post.

Thanks for stopping by.

... I've wondered about that antenna. I've seen it on the chart house roof or added to the radar mast, and in one pic on both locations. ...

I'll be putting two of these antennae on this model - one one the chart house & one on the main mast.

The answer to the question in my previous post is that these are Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) antennae.  I'm assuming ('cause I don't really know) these antenna were used in pairs on the PT boats, one being a transmitter & one being a receiver.  Anyone know for sure?

I've been working away building a few more details for the bridge/chart house assembly.

First up is the 8" searchlight located behind the bridge.

I used the Revell kit part, replacing the molded light mast, and adding a scratch built yoke to hold the light.  I hollowed out the light & inserted a shiny reflector made from wine bottle foil 🍷, and a clear plastic lens.  Once the light is mounted on the bridge bulkhead, I'll add wiring to its backside for a little realism.

Here''s a photo showing the searchlight build sequence;

Next up, more antennae.

I finished building an IFF antenna for the main mast, and an antenna to be mounted between the bridge & the starboard MG turret.

... and a photo showing the searchlight & antennae with a coat of paint.

Hopefully I have the bridge/chart house completed for my next update.

Thanks again for looking in.

Hi again!

Well, we've reached another milestone on this build - the bridge & chart house are complete. :yahoo:

Since my last update, I've been working on adding a couple of small details to finish the bridge & chart house.  These included;

- 2 life rings modifying the the original Revell kit parts by adding ropes (thread) & mounting brackets (cut from plastic sheet).

- a fire extinguisher & mounting bracket scratch built using plastic sprue, wine bottle foil 🍷, and lead wire.

Parts completed earlier were glued in place, including the life float, chart house vents, search light & cable, & the antennae.  Finally, I added my inkjet printed number decals.

Here are photos showing the completed bridge & chart house;

I won't be attaching the MG's & stop rails until the end of the build, to prevent damaging them.  But, I couldn't resist dry fitting the starboard guns just to see how they will look.

Next up, I'll finish the day cabin details, including the main mast.

Thanks for looking.

(Simply speechless. As an American, I grew up with this kit. You’ve unleashed it! And thank you for NOT making it the 109!)

Speechless covers it. Exquisite workmanship and artistry.
