snapper_city
Hi guys Here is the latest kit on the bench. The lovely Meng Me-163 Komet in 1:32 flavour. So far it has gone together flawlessly apart from one area which I will highlight in the last picture. This will be a naked build using metallics and Uschi van der Rosten wood decals. I have never used these before in trying to stick to a theme of trying a new technique on each build. I saw one of these naked builds online and decided I just had to have one. Sit down, strap in, lets see where this takes us... Firstly here is what I'm working with. IMAG4125 by Mark Inman, on Flickr The office area with a little scratch building to liven things up. Apologises for the poor quality pictures. My phone really struggles these days... IMAG4126 by Mark Inman, on Flickr The Quickboost resin seat Vs the kit option. The kit does come with P.E seat belts to be fair to Meng but you cant beat resin. I did think about some HGW fabric straps but decided against it on this occasion. IMAG4127 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Behind the cockpit bulkhead is one of the fuel tanks. This area is barely visible once the fuselage is together so I'm not going to go too mad here. IMAG4128 by Mark Inman, on Flickr The chemical reaction hot end. IMAG4129 by Mark Inman, on Flickr IMAG4130 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Here is roughly how things will go together. Cockpit attaches to the fuel tank which attaches to the rocket motor. IMAG4132 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Mk108 30mm cannons IMAG4133 by Mark Inman, on Flickr The long sticky out bits for all the armour guys.. IMAG4134 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Finally the ugly area. This giant seam line will be visible through the open port on the top of the wing to expose the guns. This will need taking care of as I'm still working this out. Do I fill and sand or create a cover from plasticard? I will be scratching a little in here also to jazz it up a bit more. Gorby
This looks good. I don't think I've seen a WIP for one of these before. I'm just off to see if 'Airscale' do those sets for 1/48.

Martian
Given the limited amount of room for sanding, I think I would be looking at skinning the area with thin plastic card. Martian
Nigel Heath
I agree with Martin about skinning it over with card. Nice project, looking forward to seeing this come together.

I agree this looks to be the best course of action. I'll get some masking tape pushed against the edges. Run round with a pen or pencil. Pull it out and place over plasticard. This should give a good template to work from. 22 minutes ago, Procopius said: Ah, the ol' pilot dissolver. It gets worse for poor Jerry. Either side of his legs in the cockpit are fuel tanks. If these puncher and the fuel comes into contact with an organic material (cotton, skin etc) then it spontaneously combusts. Pair this with the chance of a broken back on landing if you fail to lower the skid correctly, probably made flying this a bum clenching experience. 7 minutes ago, cocky05d said: When i saw the title of the post ,didn't know what i was going to find when i clicked on here . The fuel was a combination of concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide and a solution of Calcium Permanganate, known as T-Stoff. The pilots had to wear a special acid resistant flying suit and boots made of asbestos-mipolamfibre. Mind you, it did produce 3800lb of thrust giving a top-speed of 596mph (960km/h). I'll pull up a chair for this one. Crack on Sir!

I did have a memoir written by an ex Komet pilot .Seen film of it going straight up in the air ,what a ride .
billn53
Ooh! Ooh! I have this kit, and the UvdR decals too. I'll be following your build with great interest.

Of course, as several learned, acid-resistant isn't quite the same thing as acid-proof.
snapper_city
Hi guys Mini update... I have made a couple of simple blanks to cover the wing internal seam line. IMAG4140 by Mark Inman, on Flickr As you can see not a great deal will be seen. IMAG4141 by Mark Inman, on Flickr I have also been playing about with Mr Color GX2 Gloss Black. Quite possibly the finest gloss black I have ever used. IMAG4144 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Here is my previous AK Extreme Metals paint chart sprayed over their own gloss black base. IMAG4143 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Since then I have added a few more to the collection so gave the reverse side a coat of the GX2 before continuing the paint chart. The metallic's lay down so nicely over this stuff. I'm really looking forward to painting the naked Me-163. IMAG4139 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Until next time... snapper_city
Hi guys Small update of where things are at. The day started off with an up and down. Firstly the up. Mr Postman stopped by with a parcel of joy. IMAG4172 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Now the down. I managed to put a nice TET fingerprint on the inside of the rear fuselage, exhaust cover area. IMAG4170 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Not 100% perfect but its quite difficult to get sanding sticks in this area. IMAG4173 by Mark Inman, on Flickr The office dashboard. IMAG4174 by Mark Inman, on Flickr A little more scratching in the office to replicate the fuel lines. IMAG4175 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Everything ready for spraying. IMAG4177 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Not as much done as I was hoping to get done but all finished for the day. Firstly the cockpit area was painted with AK Microfiller Primer Black then coated in Vallejo Model Air RLM66. This was the first time I have used acrylics in over 18 months and I was all geared up for all the issues you can get with acrylics. Against all fears it behaved flawlessly. IMAG4179 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Lastly the areas in preparation for metallic painting have been given a wet coat of Mr Color GX2 Gloss Black. Hewy
Very nice so far mark, most interested in this, an aircraft i haven't modelled before, but want to, the meng kit looks to be very well. Detailed oob, but some additions by yourself are improving it further Glynn
snapper_city
Hi guys I have been busy on the cockpit area over the last few days. All the detail painting is done and the instrument panel decals are down. There are a few more placard decals for the side walls then I'll give it all a clear coat ready for weathering. I'll get some pictures up in the next few days. I'm not going to go too mad with the weathering as I doubt these things saw enough action to get that beaten up. Cheers.
snapper_city
Hi guys Not much to show but here is where things stand currently. Here are the Kit instrument decals Vs the Airscale set. IMAG4195 by Mark Inman, on Flickr I first tried the kit ones but found them to be too grey. IMAG4196 by Mark Inman, on Flickr The Airscale ones are much better. IMAG4198 by Mark Inman, on Flickr IMAG4199 by Mark Inman, on Flickr IMAG4201 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Like I said in the previous post I have a few more Airscale placards to attach then on with weathering...

snapper_city
Life has been quite busy lately so only have a small bit to show. I have added oils to the seat belts and enamel washed the cockpit. IMAG4209 by Mark Inman, on Flickr IMAG4216 by Mark Inman, on Flickr

I doubt I'll do any chipping as I doubt these aircraft saw many sorties. This is the first time I have used oils on seat belts. I really feel like I'm starting to get the hang of working with oils now after a couple of years. Still lots to perfect but going in the right direction. The control panel will look even better after a flat coat and some klear or Krystal klear over the dials. I'm just hoping I get some time over Christmas to work on this. snapper_city
Hi guys It's been a while since I last worked on this but I'm coming to the end of my armour M113 build that I got side tracked with. Once it is finished I will be jumping straight back on with this. It will probably be another week or two but it will be back. Watch this space.
