PK-128 BAe Jaguar T Mk2 ETPS - DONE!

So in a moment of 70's fuelled Matchbox nostalgia, I'm also throwing my hat in with this one

Bought in another moment of nostalgia from an online auction site a number of years back.

Love that box art on the back. Omani scheme is cool.

The second hand contents were carefully repackaged...

But everything there and accounted for. Decals look ok but will put them in the window for a week or two.

And a rub of a pencil to reveal it's 1973 origins, probably the single seater kit? Scalemates has this as a 1983 release..

I'll be honest, I have very low expectations of this one...but I can't resist that ETPS scheme and I've always liked the Jaguar and Matchbox.

Wish me luck - I think I'll need it!

Thanks for looking and good luck with your Matchbox builds.

Dermot

Nice one Dermot, I started this one many years ago and managed to botch the paintwork. The kit ended up in the bin. I still have the decal sheet and would like to finish it one of these one days in the ETPS colours.

(I may have to resort to finding an Italeri or Hasegawa kit and putting the Matchbox decals on it! :D)

Having looked a little bit more closely at the parts last night Ray, I think your plan is definitely the way to go!!

So with the Dauphin build going to take a little bit longer, I'm starting with the Jag...

Some dry-fitting to check the fuselage halves and canopy - yep, that looks ok!

On closer inspection, those "ejection seats"

Honestly Matchbox, what were you thinking?!! They're like a mash-up of something from a 70s TV Sci-Fi show mixed with a chair I used to push my dear old Mum around in when she was in a nursing home.

I could just get some resin or metal replacements and drop them in (they'll need a floor too) but no fun in that. So off to look up pictures of Martin Baker Jaguar seats and figure out how much bodging I can manage with these.

Looking at my bench right now, it's got a certain modelling-era feel to it!

So a bit more done on the 'Jag.

Added a couple of bulkheads in the cockpit - the front one is needed more than the back but added it anyway. Also put in some plastic strip just on the the sidewalls to take the bare look off them.

Only one cannon on this version apparently so filled the right side one with some stretched sprue.

Next up was the seats - started by cutting a hole in the front for the ejection pull handle to be added later. Also sanded them down to be thinner in profile and less 'arm-chairy'

Next, it was off with the headrest and a new top box added - this is just scrap sprue and card.

And some final scrap bits of card added for a little more detail. I also scored some lines in the cushion to take a wash.

Looking at a before and after comparison, quite happy how these turned out!

Thanks everyone and got a bit more done.....buttoned up the fuselage.

Then added the wings and tailplanes.

The wing root fit wasn't great so out with the filler. The nose also had a weird step or kink in it just ahead of the cockpit so that will need some fettling.

I'm calling the seats done and happy how they look based on what I started off with. Won't see that much through the original canopy anyway.

So a bit more done on the Jag...

Following a couple of coats of white from a spray can, masked up the wing tips and tail for red,,

Then masked those for blue - this was the closest I had to Oxford Blue and think it's not a bad match.

Still needs some touch-ups here and there but happy how it's coming along!

Klear'ed...

And then time for the 40 year old decals....eek!

They've had a couple of weeks in a sunny window first. Went down fine though left a lot of white adhesive residue behind which needed a bit of cleaning up. Overall, the colours are a bit muted (e.g. red/white) and I might swap the roundels under the cockpit which are a little see-through. But the black lettering and white serials were good.

38832981465_d461b3d210_b.jpgMatchbox Jaguar T2 PK-128_paint_decals by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr

Considering the age of this kit (and the decals), I can live with it!

As for the tail, I've seen a black leading edge and tip on some pictures but not as wide as i've done here - I blame the over-eager Matchbox engraver for leading me astray....

Thanks for looking.

Dermot

I like the scheme, your work on it looks the biz Dermot. I need to find me a twin seat Jag now me thinks!

Cheers Ray.

To be honest, can’t say I’d recommend this kit, except for nostalgia reasons only!

I suppose it might possibly function as a source of underwing tanks for Hasegawa's GR1.  I think you're on the way to a pretty result there nonetheless.
