Revell 1/24 65 Ford Mustang - Newbie Kitbash

OK - This is my first ever go at building a kit, and leaning more to the creative side of things I decided I wanted to have a crack at kitbashing some kind of post apocalyptic Fury Roadesque kind of thing. Since this is my first try I thought I would keep it simple and keep the car mostly as is, just stick on some bigger wheels, go crazy on the weathering, and add 'war stuff' later when I get to that particular bridge. I don't have much equipment at the moment, and only four paint colours, so don't expect anything too colourful or exciting haha.

I started putting together some little pieces, and realised once I had done the primer and started painting that the seam on the engine bit is really ugly. Urgh! Still getting the hang of using paint thinner, and how the paint goes on. I'm holding off putting on any of the super shiny silver parts until the very last.

Lesson learned with the seam, I tried to file the seat joins with a nail file. I'm going to prime them tomorrow and then scour the internet for seat painting guides. I want them to look old and dirty. I figured it was best to paint them before I glue them in.

I'm also starting to think about my back wheels. I figure if I'm in a desert wasteland I want bigger wheels. I'm trying to scare some up, but in the meantime I'm wondering how to make them work. Do I fix a way to have this thing I'm holding in the picture lower (which feels flimsy to me), or do I fix to lower the whole...uh...chassis is it called? Any ideas would be warmly welcomed.

Apologies for my dreadful lack of any car knowledge and somewhat embarrassing terminology. I'll get there.

Small update, I've been pottering about putting together the remainder of the car and priming it. Today I also had a go at roughing up a tyre, and I'm ridiculously proud of how gross it looks. I used the chopped up lid from some fish food to make the spikes, and shaved pastels to add the rusty dust.

The seats are painted too, and I'm working myself up to making those look distressed and battered. I also scored some spare wheels and tyres off e bay (so happy) and am really really looking forward to them arriving so I can make them look scary.

This is incredible fun!

Great wear on the seats, and I love that spiky wheel. Looks like you're a bit of a natural! Looking forward to seeing it all come together.

Thank you Meteors! So very kind :D

My big bag of spare wheels and tyres arrived today and I've picked out some beefy big'uns for the back set. I've not lifted the suspension yet, figure I need to stick some props in there or something. I also now have a crazy amount of wheels for future projects :)

I've also pretty much got the car together, which is kind of a big deal for me since it's the first time I've ever assembled a model kit before! I've got the base colour on, which looks a complete mess as I figure out how paints works on bigger surfaces, in the end I stuck with keeping it just the primer. Lucky for me I *want* it to look like a gross mess. I also realised there were no stickers in the box, and since the box had been torn open in the shop I was wondering if somebody had had them away before I bought the kit? Not that it matters, I don't need them, but it would have been nice to have a go at sticking them on.

I'm also playing about with what I want to go over the windows. I'm not using the plastic glass, and have painted up some tapestry material to try emulate wire mesh. Not sure about these yet...

Next up I'm going to weather/rust up the car body. I don't have an airbrush so I'll be roughing it with my brushes and following a nice looking youtube tutorial I found. Need to spike up the back wheels too!

It's been a while! Work has been crazy and I've not had a chance to touch my model. As of today I'm on Christmas break, and I finally got to put on the back wheels and add some crud to my car.

I'm already noticing some things I like and don't like. I like that I painted the bonnet because it gave me some freedom to sand back for weathering, whilst the body which is just primer feels limiting and kind of flat. Next model, paint the whole thing! More colour too, this model is starting to feel a bit too dull. I'm also not so thrilled with the back wheels but I can't put my finger on why, I don't mind the ridiculous size as I want the model to be ridiculous, but they don't feel *right* somehow.

I'm now making spikes to stick on the body, which is fiddly as I'm cutting them out of a plastic lid with a scalpel and painting them a steel colour. I want loads of these things, loads! So it's going to take a while. Once those are on I'm going to use chalk dust to add some of the red 'sand' dirt that's on the tyres to the lower body. I'm also hoping the steel coloured spikes will help break up the overwhelming brown-ness.

Looking forward to playing with my car over Christmas, I'm learning so much, I'm already making plans for my next one! :)

I'm very impressed with it so far, you've done the grime really well. I know what you mean with it looking a bit brown, but I should imagine that in the post apocalyptic age, they would have better things to worry about than turtle waxing the car (it would certainly make a mess of the drive through car wash).

I'm interested to see what it will look like with more spikes – the phrase 'furious hedgehog' seems appropriate.

A great start and you will find that each one you do gets better and better.

May I suggest you spend a bit of time reading some of the past builds on here.

You will learn lots of different techniques and will want to experiment to test your skills.

I look forward to your next posts.

It shall be so! I'm naming my first build Furious Hedgehog, thanks Gorby :D

The name is apt in anther way as well, by the by, as these spikes are driving me crazy! I'm getting glue everywhere and I keep knocking them off. I'm also scrapping the mesh I had prepared before and am sticking these 'bars' on the windscreen instead. I went to my first model shop today and treated myself to some plastic strips just for this.

The spike needs griming up a bit more, they still look too new and fake.I need to touch them up as well, all my fiddling about with them has exposed the blue plastic underneath in places (I was too lazy to prime them, now I'm paying the price). I also added some red chalk to the underside to match the dust on the wheels, I like how it looks!

And one more pic, all the add on bits are still in progress, I'm not entirely happy with how they look yet.

I have some questions if I may? Is it possible to buy 1:24 sized accessories, like oil drums, roof racks and gas canisters, without buying an entire kit? If so, can anybody recommend a good online shop for this? I was also wondering, how do you glue on tiny fiddle bits, I tried using tweezers but I lose so much dexterity and the glue takes so long to dry. I'm guessing the answer is practice, but any tips would be appreciated.

I think the spikes are a definite improvement and the opaque windscreen is an interesting, but believable, idea. Butt joining anything is always a pain in the butt, if you are using glue specifically intended for plastic, sometimes it can help the scrape away the paint at the joint as the paint can reduce the glues effectiveness. Don't worry if you use too much glue on the joint, in reality the spikes would probably welded to the body, so excess glue might look like a welded seem (although I'm just guessing, it may, it may not).

1/24 isn't my scale, in fact cars aren't my thing – I'm really only interested in the apocalyptic aspect, so my knowledge is a little limited in this field. Had a look on Scalemates for the items you mentioned:

https://www.scalemates.com/search.php?q=*&fkSECTION[]=Kits&fkSCALE[]="1%3A24"&fkGROUPS[]="Accessories"&fkTYPENAME[]="Detail and Conversion sets"&fkTYPEGROUP[]="Fuel drums and cans"&fkTYPEGROUP[]="Gas bottles"&fkTYPEGROUP[]="Roof racks"

I have no idea what shops would specialise in this stuff, but I would start with the big auction that we all love to hate (but shop at anyway). On the right side of the screen there are other options that you may find of interest.

If we are talking about very tiny parts, I use a bit of Blue Tac, rolled to a point. Use the point to pick up the part, apply the glue to the target area, place the part and twist the Blue Tac to release. Can take a bit of practice, but it stops the part pinging out of tweezers and going into orbit, never to be seen again.

Hope that helps - we are always happy to answer questions if we can.

Awesome, thanks so much Goby. It's really encouraging to get good feedback, thank you. I managed to find a guy who does resin moulded accessories, mostly naval but he does 1/24 oil barres and jerry cans at a great price so I'll be onto that after Christmas. I'm tempted to build my own rack using wire in the end, I've been looking on e ha and people are flogging basic wire racks for a song, and I refuse to pay for something so basic haha. And the blu-tac tip is just the sort of thing I'm looking for, cheers!

OK I think I'm done, just added some coverings to the windows using some left over scrim tape, and I added a smidge more weathering, but honestly I feel I've got nothing else to add, and scaring up 1:24 accessories is too much of a pain and expense for my first go/learning model. Sorry the picture quality is so awful, I'll need to get some decent lighting sorted!

Thanks everyone for being so kind and looking at and commenting on my model. I really enjoyed this and have spent some Christmas money on a new car project, in 1:35 this time as I want to make a diorama too :)

As a 'first model ever' your spiny beast is very impressive. Most of us on here were kit crazy kiddies, so when we returned to the fold we had some previous experience, so as a complete newbie, the fact that you have gone beyond the basic kit and done it so well is very commendable. I assume that you have done some sort of creative hobby in the past?

Is the next one going to be post apocalypse?

Yes, but nothing like this! My 'main hobby' has been sewing, mostly bears. Forgive a quick non-model themed picture but these kinds of bears.

I guess I got a bit fed up of sewing them, and always gave them away anyway. Time to try something new. My next car project is absolutely going to be post apocalyptic, it's much more forgiving for when I make mistakes ;)

A few years ago I also made a cuddly critter, but it may be best if I don't show you a photo of Herman, believe it or not, just because he's an anatomically accurate tarantula, some people don't think he's particularly cute. In fact one of my aunt's ran screaming out of the house. Speciesist is what I call it. :spider:
