Ed Russell
Diving teams are on duty to salvage parts of Habsburg ship sunk 100 years ago. 11.11.2017, 15:4 Fire Brigade diving units were in the Bay of Muggia at Trieste on Saturday in action to bring the remains of the battleship of the Habsburg Navy SMS Wien to the surface. The ship was torpedoed 100 years ago - on 10 December 1917 - by two Italian torpedo boats. The Wien sank in a few minutes, 46 men drowned. Remains of the wreck, which lies at a depth of about 20 metres, are to be exhibited in Trieste, local media reported. The diving units are managed by the respected Friulian marine archaeologist Rita Auriemma. Fragments of the wreck will be exhibited in an exhibition on marine archeology in the Adriatic, organized under the umbrella of the Italian, Croatian and Slovenian ministries of culture and inaugurated on 17 December in Trieste. As early as the 1950s, attempts had been made to bring to light the wreck of the Wien, which, however, had led to no results. A few years ago, the spot had been located where the wreck was now hidden by the mud of the bay. SMS Wien was launched in 1895 and used in the First World War in the Adriatic. At the end of 1917, Wien together with SMS Budapest was sent to Trieste and participated in the bombardment of Italian troops in the Gulf of Trieste. On December 10, 1917, two Italian torpedo boats managed to penetrate the port of Trieste. They fired torpedos at Budapest and Wien. Budapest was missed, but Wien received two hits and sank in five minutes in the shallow waters of the port of Trieste.
