shood23
As another build finishes another must start. This time I will be building 2 of Aoshimas Nissan GT-Rs, one as a stock anyman car and one of the new Liberty Walk version cars. So on to the build and the 2 cars i am talking about. As you can see these 2 have the similarities but also have the same amount of differences. So starting with the standard car. It is the 2014 spec pure edition. I did think of trying to spec this car into the nismo 17 spec but the front bumper was a little too much work to make it look good. This car will hopefully have a showroom look to it with a nice spec'd interior and painted with Xirallic Crystal White on the exterior. Rather conveniently it comes with a VR38DETT engine which will most likely end up in the other car. Now on to the LB car. This is the new release from Aoshima classed as version 1 so possibly there may be more to come in the future. Me being me I am not going to be building this out of the box, as you will notice in the picture I will be adding a swan neck rear wing and possible some rocket bunny wheels (not pictured) but overall I am just excited to be able to build an LB GT-R for under £50. Obviously with this being a specialist car the interior will be painted with a high sort of spec finish, the exterior will be using the kit decals and also be painted with LB zero fighter grey and probably top coated with a flat clear or semi gloss clear. The decals for the LB car are very nice and it's also great that they include different colours of the same decals to give the option of having light or dark paint. These are the kit rims which are very nice and are 2 peice per corner. Also they have been pre painted in black. Not sire if I have already mentioned it but these 2 kits are basically the same kit just reboxed with extra parts. Fro. What I can see these are the extra parts for the LB car. So that being said the body shells are exactly the same, the even have the same code stamp in the inside. So as these should be 2 pretty standard straight forward builds I got to sticking bits on. Front and rear bumpers are on the pure car with the bonnet only placed on. Now this is where the differences start. The front bumpers are now glued to both cars and as you can see are quite substantially different in terms of complexity. Pure car left, LB right. Mocking up the arches for the LB car. Front and rear arches mocked. Also the pure car in underneath to show the visual difference. That's it for now. More probably tomorrow Thanks for looking Shaun Edited November 7, 2017 by shood23
shood23
1st proper update of this build and it's mainly just about the LB car So late last night I got all of the arches glued on in near enough the correct place. It would be so much easier if they put some tabs or storks on the arch parts and some holes in the right place of the body shell. So o to the first upgrade possibly. This is the swan neck gt style wing that may make it on to the car, it's only held on in the wrong angle by a couple of bits of tooth pick and blu tack so would look different with all the right bits. And this is the kit duck tail style wing. After seeing both I am now not too sure which I want to do. On to the last bit of the update and it's down to the wheels. Kit wheels on the left and the rotiform LHR wheels on the right. Again I can't really decide between one or the other. So kit wheel under the body. Vs rotiform wheel under the body. And both just to give an idea of how hard my choice is. More soon Shaun Edited November 8, 2017 by shood23
Hamden
Interesting project, nice to see the standard(?) versus the modified side by side. For me I think the Rotiform wheels just edge ahead and how about the duck tail spoiler with the swan neck GT spoiler mounted above on the boot lid. Just a thought I'll get me coat............. shood23
Thanks for the input roger. I too am leaning more to the rotiform wheels that was until my better half piped up and said she likes the kit wheels more as she thinks there is too much going on with the rotiform ones, I kind of agree but at the same time the rotiforms could look incredibly nice once painted. And the rear wing idea isn't as silly as you might think as I too thought of it but didn't want to suggest it as it may be a tad overkill and the upper wing supports may get in the way of the duck tail a little but it is definatly there in my mind of how different it would look. shood23
A little more done to these today. I lie it has mainly been the LB car which has been worked on as I already know the build up of a standard GT-R. So the body is now finished and ready for primer. There was a lot of lines in some really tricky places, for fat fingers, to get at. Up against the other car. The underside of the LB car is mainly done also, I didn't want it looking perfect and there are also a couple of areas I will be hand painting soon. All the brakes and suspension is on. Blue shocks with gold calipers covered by black wheels. Hopefully most will be seen when completed. And talking about the wheels I am going to have to stick with the kit rims on this build as the rotiform ones require a little more work than I thought. They stick out past the arches by around the same amount as the new uprights push the wheels out so in hindsight I should have tested more to find this put before gluing parts on. shood23
A Monday evening update. Today has been quite prouctive as you will see down below. Some annoying parts with some satisfying parts also. Tge main body components for each car have now been put in a coat of primer. Now I can finally picture the LB car with the arches without having glare from shiny white plastic. Things were all going well until, for only the second time ever, I had this issue with already sanded down mould lines coming through the primer and dipping leaving an extra sort of panel line. This only happened on one car and I figure it was just old primer probably too much thinner left I the can where I hadn't shaken it properly before plus maybe going too thick on the first coat. Soon sorted it though and now the only lines on the body are the ones that are ment to be there. It was worst on this little area just above the rear wheel Got the bonnet (or hood for you Americans ) painted in LB zero fighter grey. More little details will be added with paint soon. So on to one of the funny parts of today. It was only after I went through a million sheets of sand paper and 3 years worth of water sorting out the LB car body shell that I noticed the zero paints colour I chose for this car is almost the exact same colour as Halfords primer. Maybe with white primer under it may have a different tone but it's definatly not the primer colour coming through as the zero paint is thick and heavy. shood23
Thanks for the comment Ian. Honestly I love the look of the LB GT-R. I will definatly be getting a couple more for future builds.. Shaun
shood23
Right so on to an update for the build. Standard gt-r is sat waiting still in white primer just while I wait for the humidity to drop down a little as I am a little worried about it messing with the painting. LB GT-R has been fully painted in zero paints LB zero fighter grey. Also had a very light coat of clear coat to help with the decal adhesion. The only reason the LB car has leapt ahead of the standard one is due to the standard one needing 2 coats of primer as opposed to 1 for the LB. So after a day of gassing off I made a start at making some decals and getting them on to go along side the kit decals. The front area had carbon added from hobby design. I tried with shunko carbon but honestly it is the worst carbon decal I have ever used, it thick and brittle and doesn't want to stick down around even the lightest of bends. P.s. the gtr badge has been added since the picture. The rear had some carbon added also. I tried to do it in 1 bit from side to side but it was a little tricky so split it into 3 bits for ease. The whole car from the rear. And the whole car from the front. A lot of the decals are kit stock decals but I also added a few from the aventador fighter set aswell. More when I finally get my butt into gear and order some more paint. (Matt clear for this) Shaun

shood23
Thanks for the kind words roger. I can't take all the credit though as this for me is one of Aoshimas best kits (along with the McLaren f1 gtr) which almost just slots together. shood23
So finally a little update to this build. As we all know the weather recently has got a little bit cold so that has slowed my progress down, like it does every year, but over the last couple of days I have been allowed to spray in a warmer part of the house so I've been able to get a few bits done. The interior parts for the LB car have had the first stage of colour put on. It is not as bright as I thought it was going to be but maybe when the darker colours are on and clear has been applied it will brighten up a bit. Failing that I will restart with white primer under or put some gulf orange over instead. The main body parts have finally been sprayed with tamiya matt clear. For the first matt colour car I've made I was torn between if I liked it or not or if I needed to go over it in semi gloss. Honestly I'm still a little torn but I don't want to change it now just to like it better how it was. Complicated thought process I know but I want to like this build in 6 months still. The standard GT-R has finally had a couple of coats of vw white followed by a couple of xirallic crystal white (basically a fancy pearl white used on a gemballa enzo) and to top it off a few light coats of premixed clear just so i can get the decals on. In standard light. And sunlight. More soon Shaun
Mpfiend
Hi Shaun, Fabulous work on both of these. The matt finish on the liberty car looks spot on, looking at the carbon fibre though, perhaps these areas could benefit from the semi gloss or egg shell finish. its just a thought. Perhaps you could make a test card half body colour in matt and half CF decal in semi gloss to see how it looks? Keith.

shood23
Right so a little interior update. The colour mismatch was really bugging me so I have striped it back to plastic to start again but this time in white primer. Shaun

shood23
An update for today. So after taking the advice from here and my better half I went with the semi gloss finish to the carbon. This was less than a minute after spraying. 5 minutes and to show my cheap masking method. And finally around an hour later when it was touch dry. And I have to agree it is a much better finish overall And for the final part of the update. The interior parts where stripped and redone with white primer and gulf orange. Now on to masking and the second colour. More soon Shaun

shood23
Thanks roger its not bad and thankfully the matt finish has really grown on me. .................................................................... So for this evenings update I finally have made a start to the smaller bits. So the engine for the LB car has been primed and painted in alclad white aluminium. The top part of the engine has also had the same treatment. The outer rims for the LB car were stripped of the rather nicely done black paint from Aoshima and so far painted in primer And finally for the LB car I painted on the body with a brush to pick out some grime lines. And then lastly the first stage in the wide body bolts have been pointed. And on the standard car it's just been a case of flatting down the latest coat of clear and shining up a few small areas for the few decals that need to go on. So far as the hood/ bonnet doesn't need any decals I flatted it down and sprayed with the first of a couple of layers of Mr hobby top coat. It' not perfect but I feel with a couple more coats it will have a super shine. More soon Shaun
shood23
A small update of the little bits I have done in the past few days while other bits are drying. The wheels and tyres are near enough done now. There are tyre decals in the kit but I highly doubt they will fit on the super low profile tyres. I have made a start to the lights on the body and where better to start than the iconic rear rings. For me nothing make a GT-R look better with the 4 circle rear lights installed. The rear lights are made up of 3 parts for each side and the fit into the holes is absolulty perfect, much better than the fujimi version GT-R. Second colour of the interior is now on. 1 more to go and some decals and it's finished. More soon Shaun
