At Sea
Hi, One of those questions that will take a second for someone in the know to answer... RAF Typhoons seem to run a centre line tank for air shows, otherwise they are clean. Is this a CofG issue or is it more boring than that due to transit distances and loitering times? Bobski
I strongly suspect it'll be for fuel. Some displays are away from the airfield at which the aircraft is based, so presumably the fuel is needed to transit to and from the display as well as for the display itself. It's more economical to work up one display (with a tank) than two (one with and one without) so they display with it.
Dazza
It was mentioned (by someone who is on 29(R) sqn) that it has nothing to do with fuel needed to transit intergalactic mileage to faraway locations on our massive island, rather it was just easier not to have to drop (see what I did there?) the tank for every display and then add it again when the display jet was flown on normal sorties, that and the fact that given the Typhoon's SEP and agility, leaving the tank on would make practically no difference to the display routine anyway... -Dazza
