PhantomBigStu Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 (edited) Here we go. Quite a nice kit for one so old, though the price I paid was my probably to close to the italeri. Edited January 8, 2021 by PhantomBigStu 3
jrlx Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 Hi Stu, Welcome to the GB! Quite nice to have the old Airfix Sunderland in Cheers Jaime 1
The Spadgent Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Nice one. Glad to have you aboard the good ship floatplane. I'll tag along if I may. Johnny. 1
PhantomBigStu Posted November 6, 2017 Author Posted November 6, 2017 collection of parts in the box, tried a new techinque on the windows, popped them in them painted them with varnish so hopefully they won't fog when I then cemented them in. Normally use clearfix but thats dried out in the bottle 3
Beard Posted November 7, 2017 Posted November 7, 2017 (edited) I'll be following because I bought one of these, a while ago, for a tenner and haven't got round to doing it as I haven't got space to display it. Edited November 7, 2017 by Beard to correct spelling.
PhantomBigStu Posted November 9, 2017 Author Posted November 9, 2017 fuselage together, predictably bad fit 1 1
stever219 Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 For a kit that old I sometimes find that I get a better fit by removing or modifying locating pins and/or holes to allow some movement of the parts. I still have a soft spot for this kit, and one lurking in the loft just waiting to be put together (and nicer surface detail than the Italeri kit).

PhantomBigStu Posted November 29, 2017 Author Posted November 29, 2017 Need to crack on with this, all primed, now the fun of sanding the joins and carefully painting around the windows..... 4
bristol boy Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Had this kit for Christmas in the early '70's (was probably about 12 at the time) so I have a soft spot for it and would like to do one myself eventually! Will be watching your progress with interest.
jrlx Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Good progress, Stu! Great to see it closed up and primed! Cheers Jaime

Fortunately not got that problem, a troublesome bit of ceiling that has baffled scientists is the reason why redecoration is a no go, anyway as for the toy plane, decided to not bother carefully painting the windows, can’t see anything anyway so I’ll just paint over them and do the gloss black trick later. Sanded the seams and got a couple of coats of white on 1
LDSModeller Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Hi Stu, Definitely looking like a Sunderland (even upside down) The Kit just has that unmistakable look. I know the kit is old (I have a few), but you can't beat it for nostalgia and the fact when it first came out all those years ago, real Sunderland's were still flying. Keep up the good work Regards Alan
PhantomBigStu Posted December 12, 2017 Author Posted December 12, 2017 Been negleticing to work on this, but did some hear and there, sanded the white and applied the odd bit of white till it looked fine, masked up and painted the first coat of extra dark sea grey 1
PhantomBigStu Posted December 16, 2017 Author Posted December 16, 2017 (edited) Upper camo done, though I’m a total it out and forgot I needed to pop to the shops for more white to finish touching the underside up so won’t be continuing with this till later in the week Edited December 18, 2017 by PhantomBigStu 1
Rob G Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 A mate of mine had this kit when I were a nipper. I was muchly jealous, because all that I ever got was small Matchbox kits. It's looking grand there, lad!
The Spadgent Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Nice camo. I’m interested to see what you do with Ze windows. Johnny.
jrlx Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Hi Stu ( @PhantomBigStu ) Any more progress on this one? The GB deadline has been extended one week till 14 January 2018, 23:59 GMT. Would this be useful for you to finish this entry? Cheers Jaime
PhantomBigStu Posted January 6, 2018 Author Posted January 6, 2018 (edited) Was hoping this would be quietly forgotten, the few days leading up to Christmas weren’t the best, and unfortunately this won’t be further progressing. Edited January 6, 2018 by PhantomBigStu 1
jrlx Posted January 6, 2018 Posted January 6, 2018 Sorry to know this won't be finished, Stu. I hope you're OK and wish you all the best for 2018! Jaime 1

Jaime All Ok now, felt like crap for the rest of that day, but been so much better since then. Not to chocked up over it, wasn't happy with the white finish anyway. All the best to you for 2018 1
PhantomBigStu Posted December 4, 2020 Author Posted December 4, 2020 Here we go again, won’t be beaten this time 1
