After seeing how easily some people apply foil to their aircraft I decided it was time to join this Alumni and master this black art.

So armed with a roil of cheap kitchen foil and some not-so-cheap Microscale metal foil adhesive I am embarking upon the Airfix P51-D Mustang (A01004A).

I'm not added any aftermarket, so this will be built out of the box.

I've started by painting the necessary areas with interior green.

P51-D

I'll let this dry off and then pick out some of the wall details before adding the instrument panel, seat and control stick.

Thanks corsairfoxfouruncle. I've tried a couple of test pieces on some hurricane wings and got on okay, and read a few builds so I'm happy to give it a go but its nice to know the support is there if (when) I need it!

Cockpit has been finished and fuselage has been glued together.

The wing uppers have been glued to the lower section and are only dry fitted. They hold in place quite nicely just with the friction.

they need a clean up from some "leakage", then I think I'll foil them before attaching them.

Foliage (?) is going well. Nearly got the wings done.

seen some curves on the fuselage I'm not looking forward to....

BigDave,

Welcome to the club.  Whenever possible look at as many P-51 closeups as you can.  Their may be panel lines that aren't on the kit that you can exploit to your advantage in difficult areas.

Thanks Gents, I had guessed that small pieces was the way forward in those areas.

And I'll keep a look out for missing panel lines. Main area that worries me is around the air intake - that'll be fun!

Well spotted, Dave!

It's a great little kit, though, isn't it?

Check out the wheels with flatted tyres, and rectangular axles that put the flat in the right place!

I see you've left the prop off till later, good move!

I expect you got a plan.

I can tell you what I did if needed.

Wow, I just saw the wings picture. It didn't appear automatically, for some reason, but I clicked on the blue flickr text up it came.

It's looking great! 🌟🌟🌟

Foil continues apace. Gotta love all those curves that you didn't realise were there...

Wings finished, started on the fuselage. Foil everywhere!

What Neil said, most impressive! That first wing photo was breathtaking. Is this the Microscale or kitchen flavour foil?

Cheapest kitchen type foil that I could get on the supermarket.

I have a P-51A and two Hughes H-1s that need the treatment and I think this is the way I'll go, thank you! An inspirational WIP for sure.

I found kitchen foil a bit fragile for the way I work, but there's NO doubt big Dave is making hay with it here.

Definitely worth having a go- virtually no outlay and you can try out on a poor kit or leftovers.

Thanks, but my inspiration is from the excellent builds of others on here - especially the Starfighter by @Bungalow_Bill

I do have problems with tearing, but considering the amount of foil I got for 67p I feel no hardship from cutting another piece - its all a learning process and I might try a different size/shape cut next time.

I tried my skills out on a spare Mk1 Hurricane wing I had.

I haven't forgotten about this now very shiny thing. Behold :

Nothing has actually been glued on your, just held on by friction.

I've got to say some of the curves have been a challenge, but I've loved it!

I'm thinking I should have painted the nose before I put the foil on..... Oh well.

She's looking great.

Are you doing the big blue wrap around paint job on the nose, or just the anti-glare panel?

Either way, you can paint over with no problems.

Masking tape shouldn't be a problem either -

I foiled the elevators and ailerons too, and then I wasn't so sure. ! Metal or fabric? I still don't know for sure, but they'll take paint if necessary .

Great bit of foil work! And I'm glad you're enjoying the process
