Well it's done - not sure what to make of this kit, it's full of 'niggles' and silly errors by Italeri but it does end up quite nice. If it was Revell pricing it would be great, but it's Tamiya pricing so feels overpriced for what you get, especially with the errors.

Here is my effort for the F-104 Group Build. This is the 1:72 scale Hasegawa kit with some aftermarket resin from CMK, a turned brass nose probe from Master, and NASA chase plane markings from Rocketeer Decals (the NMF, white, yellow, and fluorescent red-orange areas are painted on).

The model was built as a tribute to Joe Walker, who was one of the "Right Stuff" test pilots at Edwards during the 50s and 60s. Joe flew just about every rocket powered X plane there was back then, including several flights in the X-15 that reached altitudes high enough to earn him his astronaut wings. Joe unfortunately lost his life flying this F-104 in a mid-air collision with the XB-70 Valkyrie bomber. This occurred during, of all things, an unauthorised marketing photo shoot for General Electric. In an effort to maintain a tight formation with the XB-70 immediately to his port side, he encountered severe turbulence from the vortices off the Valkyrie's wingtip, which was a little-understood phenomenon at the time. The turbulence was so severe that it flipped the F-104 onto its back, and sent it rolling to port and into one of the vertical fins of the XB-70. Joe was killed instantly. He had radioed in when he first felt the turbulence, saying that he didn't support this mission as it had no scientific value. True words from a true hero. The XB-70 was also lost that day, and only one of its two crew members was able to eject. And all because the marketing guys wanted a nice picture for a shareholder's report.

Build thread here.

For the F-104 Lockheed Starfighter STGB here is my finished (I really don't want to add any more decals) Lockheed NF-104 A Starfighter Aerospace Trainer for which I used the Italeri 1/72 F-104 A/C kit as a basis for my conversion.

Scratch built modifications include the housing for the rocket motor below the tail and the extended spine which accommodated the motor fuel feed lines and throttle control linkages, Extended wingtips and RCS ports top and bottom, extended air intake coves, larger area vertical tail and a lengthened nose sensor boom. Additionally I have modified an astronaut from the Airfix Lunar Module for the Pilot. The model is finished in Bare Metal Foil and Sainsbury's very best basics thin sandwich foil! The specific Aircraft markings and badges were home printed.  I've mounted the finished model on an acrylic rod set into a cheap MDF plinth sprayed gloss black with a name plate because I've always wanted a nice desktop model.

For reference I used the excellent and informative Air Force Legends Number 204 Lockheed NF-104A Aerospace Trainer booklet by Scott Landis.

The NF-104A was intended to help familiarise Pilots with the rigours of low lift/high drag flight profiles and the required reaction control systems for high altitude flight.

Would I foil an another model? Yes, but not at 1/72 although I do have a couple of 1/48 kits that would look great in foiled NMF.

Italeri F-104G Luftwaffe, painted with a mix of paints, revell aqua providing the silver for the tanks and pylons, black and the basalt grey. Xtracrylix olive drab stood in for the olivegreen, with Vallejo color for the radome grey and missle white, and the main silver being from a halfords rattle can. Finished with Winsor and Newton Matt Varnish

Dutch RF-104 by flight1903.   The kit was the Hasegawa 1/72 F-104G/S. Decals from an old Modeldecals set that I have had for more years than I remember. Although D-8143 is not on sheet, I used the numbers to make up the serial.
