Thunderbirds are go!!! TB1, TB2, TB4, and launch/container bays

Recommended Posts

I've applied a bit of a pin wash and have had a play with making it look like mid-launch. I'd be grateful for any feedback before I cal it complete. What have I missed, what can I do better (without starting again) etc.  Let me know your thoughts please.

I like the gradient on the windows and the pre-shading has worked very well.

There was one of these in the SMW competition at the weekend, yours is significantly better than that one.

The only other comment is there should be rails on the ground but since they haven't provided those you'd have to scratch build them

F.A.B James, with a wow and humble blimey from over here, I'm eight again, brilliant, right up there with Kallisti's T1's landing at LHR.

I fear many of my valuable beer tokens may be well spent very soon on Thunderbird kits now I'm 56, he,he. Great stuff, looking forward to the next episode as always. Cheers

Not too much progress due to a long weekend vacation up to sunny Nelson. Unfortunately, lots of other things to catch up on upon my return, so I only got an hour or so this evening, and I'm out again tomorrow night, so I won't get another opportunity until the weekend. The joys of being an adult! :lol

I've got the wall sub assemblies pretty much done I think. Nothing much to see other than what you've already seen there. They're waiting on the primer and will then get the same treatment as the TB1 launch bay walls. In the meantime, here's the 1st few mini-vehicles off the production line. A bit of filling required, and some more sanding. I have to say the moulds for these are pretty poor. There's detail filled in, detail missing, there's a fin missing from one of the vehicles below, which came off the sprue that way, rather than me wrecking it (makes a change), and in keeping with everything else so far, injection pin marks everywhere. (Can someone confirm if that's what they're called, or if I'm making words up please)?

Anyway, here is FAB1 (All the vehicle wheels will be primed and base coated on the sprue, so I'm assembling with them).

I'd love names for all of these if anyone happens to know them? Otherwise I will trawl the internet for answers and as I discover I will report back.

Second one is the Helijet but no idea what the first one is - don't recognise it as anything out of the TV series. Imai did make things up and also assigned other toy kits as Thunderbird models.

coming on well there. I too saw the T1 Launchpad at SMW - it was good to see just what this kit looks like in the plastic. The kit at SMW had a great launch effect beneath T1 - not sure if it was a resin cast or purpose built part but it looked like it had been made in a mould of some type - Kallisti might know as he mentioned a manufacturer that specialises in it but I cant remember it myself.

I've decided that anything that can't be identified will be ditched from the project. I don't want to have non-Gerry Anderson models. I might also try and add some details to the ones that make the cut. So far the helijet is the only one that's been positively ID'd. I've been through the Thunderbirds wiki and none of these so far (except the helijet) seem to appear.

"Some more mysteries for you all."

Blimey, maybe you should have said, "Some more Mysterions for you all", he,he. As nope. I don't recognise any of those machines either James. Even the helijet looks more Spectrum than TB.

Staying tuned for the next exciting episode as always.  Cheers

the last few before primer and painting begins.

10. Recovery Vehicle (there's enough parts to make a second one of these... I think I will do so as I recall seeing them used as a pair in an episode).

11. Firefly

12. The Mole

Scale and detail wise, these 3 and the Excavator (9. above) are heads and tails above the others. I think that the other vehicles are quite a bit too large, and that makes me loathed to waste time painting them, especially as the detail isn't great on them. What are your thoughts?

Here's a couple of pics to show the size differences.

Alongside the Booster Mortar, which was not much larger than

Compared to:

And even the Helijet isn't as big as the model scale would suggest (see the man in front of it)

Compared to the models

A friend translated some of the instructions for me. They refer to the Firefly and recovery vehicle as "How to build the rescue mecha and the bonus thing (or it might mean "The Rescue Mecha and bonus instructions")"

The helijet is called the Jet Gyro,.

Number 3 the excavator.

FAB1 as Penelope's car.

Number 5 is called the patrol machine.

The excavator is the excavator

The mole as the jet mole.

This IS a Gerry Anderson vehicle of sorts. This is an excavator that was featured in a few comic strips but not on screen. This vehicle is also included I the Deagostini 'Build you own thunderbird two'.

here is a link with some more detail

If you do make the second one of these, the remote control one, as one of them had the aerials on the cab roof facing forward, whilst the other faced backwards like the one above, also, when painting, only one had the windscreen painted black.

Thank you @Dan Griffin. That's really valuable information, on both the comic book excavator and the recovery vehicles. Looks like I'll have to build the second recovery vehicle now! :DThe antennae are exactly the same size etc, just facing forward instead?  I presume that one had a clear windscreen, if the other was painted black? I'll see what pics I can find. Thanks again.

Edit: I have found a picture of the two side by side. It looks as though No.1 has additional black stripes in front of the yellow/orange ones. I see now that the black windscreen is obviously the non-remote one, while the remote one's is painted the same as the hull. I'm going to see what I can do about adding some of the additional details too, like the intakes on the front of the track guards and the lights under the cockpit window. I might replace the aerials with snipped paper clips to reduce their diameter a bit. That join line from the two halves seems extremely apparent in my photos, so that will need a bit of work as well.

Any other thoughts on easy modifications to liven them up a bit?

I think just some careful painting and detailing

will bring these little models to life.

I'd be tempted to paint up number 4 and just

put it in the background somewhere.

(Maybe they use it to fetch the groceries?).

Sorry for the lack of updates, just one thing after another at the mo, but it's that time of year, the rush is on, and then we've also been having 25C-32C days lately and i'm finding it too hot to paint. It just tries on the pallet and the brush too quickly. Adulting huh! Not all it's cracked up to be. :D

I have got some colour down on the little vehicles, not as much as I'd like, but some is better than none.

and after the base coats went down, I got some of the detail paint in on the Firefly, and I've begun the black undercoat for the metallic areas.

A small amount more work done, but a small update is probably better than no update! The firefly is almost finished, just needs some varnish and a couple of touch ups. I only realised when uploading the photos that the red stripe is meant to extend all the way down the sides. For some reason I thought the tracks covered it and thats why the panel lines didn't go all the way down.
