Hi Hardtarget,

Welcome to the GB! This is an excellent choice! I have one of these in the stash, so I'll be following with great interest.

Let us know which colour scheme you'll use :)

Cheers

Jaime

HI All, the more the merrier. I shall be doing the Pearl Harbor kite which I believe is to be shown in the next rendition of SAM.

I made a start on a few parts and some prep work.

I started off with the IP.  The instructions would have you to sand off the face with all the molded on parts but why not simply turn it around? which is what i did without the need for sanding.  There is no size difference at all.

Next up were the wheel wells which are supposed to be a nice little fit but i found that neither part at the bottom were angled so you have to put this angle in to ensure that the top rectangular section is square to the fuselage halves. I also had to fill in the two large windows which i used some of my 'sprueglue' TM. Once cured properly ill give another coating to be sanded down later.

Windowed doors sanded to fit and then were cemented in place. I also drilled a 5mm hole for the new window.

I moved onto the wings next which need some sanding on the inners as there are lumps and bumps all over the place.

Once the wing had set, the wing tips were next and these again need some clean up and squaring up to fit the main wing.  Lining up the panel lines showed that there is some excess wing here and there.

Hey up chaps,

Progress has been good but uploads the usual non existent so its about time as the deadline is near to get some photos posted with progress and current state of play.

Seats being resin were all painted on their mountings then sawed off. some of the arm rests tend to ping off as there isnt sufficient material to cut safely.  These were glued back on and thinking if i did anouther that id saw them off first and cut off the arms.

Inner fuselage prepared and painted.  There are fit issues with this kit that you need to scrape and scrape until you get a nice fuselage fit. More issues when you try and fit the cockpit sections.

A bit of PE for the windows affixed using Krystal Klear which i used for all PE to stop it from 'pinging' about.

Seating & Cockpit in place.

Some fettling and test fitting required before it all gets sealed up.

All fits one side now for the other.

With some persuasion its looks ok.

Obligatory filler deluxe plastic putty.

The filler is too fine and required a bit of thicker filler to get a nice finish and to cover up the step differences of the fuselage.

The canopy glazing was dipped in Klear and test fitted to the fuselage.  There is a slight gap at each side window if you want to mate the top of the glazing tot he fuselage. you can fill it with card or i used additional Krystal Klear.

Once in place and dried, masking began using the mask set included.

Update 2.

With the fuselage buttoned up it was time for the elevators. They seem to have some sort of peg system but you need to drill out the holes in the main stabilizer as they are there but filled. After this i added the struts which need an aweful lot of cleaning up and delicate cutting from the sprues.  I found one that was slightly too short and was replace with plastic card to the correct dimensions and rounded.

Will all the main parts ready, priming and then a bit of paint was airbrushed on. For this kit im using the US Navy/Marine set of Vallejo MA.  Colours being 71.109 PRU Blue (as recommended by Vallejo for M-485) and 71.298 M-495.

38593007985_5d8fc34739_h.jpgDSC_0051 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

With that bit of painting out of the way it was time to affix the wing to the fuselage.  This is a line up nightmare as there is only that center section on the fuselage as a contact cementing point which is not 'squared up'  so needed quite a lot of sanding and test fitting until the right curvature and seating arrangement could be found.  once i was happy with this i cemented in place using Tamiya Cement.

With that center section in place and holing firm, the struts were added and these are int eh same condition as the rear struts and need the same amount of clean up to get a nice fit and get close to the right angles.

Great Progress Stuart

.. and Happy New Year

I was hoping this one would get an airing in this GB and this is it; some really great building and build information here  - thank you

Forgive my ignorance but is this a reboxing of the Sword kit?  I have that version in the 'to be built' pile and tips are much appreciated.

Good luck in the race to the deadline

Regards

Andrew

Excellent progress and, again, thanks for the tips.  This kit is in my stash and was a possible second entry of mine to the GB. Alas, I don't think I'll even finish my first and only entry.

Cheers

Jaime
