clive_t
More progress today - the base received what I suppose you'd call a 'pin wash' - albeit in a larger scale! I felt the gaps between the stone setts was a bit too prominent, so I brushed in some thinned black oil paint, and then wiped most of it off. I then stuck the big rubble pile on where it needs to be: I then set to work hiding the gaps between rubble and base, where they were most noticeable: Then just to smooth out the pile adjacent to the ground I applied my old favourite, some "ground-up chinchillas" (OK, chinchilla dust for the uninitiated!) over some PVA: A bit more work on the smaller rubble pile - just a couple of dark washes and some dry-brushing in a pale stone tone: Finally for today, I made some pockets for the Denison smock, from a small amount of 'Grey stuff': Hopefully some more progress tomorrow Thanks for watching!
Ratch
Wonderful work Clive I built this one about six years ago in remembrance of my grandfather who was with the 58th (Duke of Wellington’s) Anti-Tank Regiment RA (TA). They operated 57mm (6pdr) and 17pdr guns. The regiment operated with 46 (North Midland) Infantry Division; during September 1943 they were assigned to X Core, assisting the 5th US Army in their invasion of Salerno. In October of that year it entered the Italian campaign, operating with V Corps again, only this time under Eighth Army. He was demobbed with a perforated ear drum. My dad now has the model. Looking forward to seeing yours finished

Bullbasket
Looks like you've had the builders in. Coming along nicely Clive. I must get some of the chinchilla dust when I'm back in the old country next week. John.

Looking not too dissimilar to the aftermath of one of my first attempts at major DIY back in my first days as a home-owner Not much progress to report, sadly - Saturday was a bust for me, no modelling at all. This evening, just a bit of time for some priming of the two Airfix figures: The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that this fellow will be casually smoking a cigarette. Not that I condone such activity, you understand! It's only once sprayed this guy that I notice the lower pockets on the Denison smock are a little on the small side. I am hoping that once painted, that will be less apparent Thanks for watching

clive_t
More progress this evening. The other side of the big rubble pile was bedded in with bits and pieces of loose rubble, and yet more crushed chinchillas: The walkway was then glued on to the base, with the wall just placed there as a guide. That won't be fixed in until last: Obviously the undulations in the base plate meant that some gentle persuasion was needed in order to keep it from springing up! Looked a bit better with the weight removed, though: Then finally for this evening, I fixed the smaller rubble pile to the base and the walkway, and filled the gaps with yet more Milliput, and a sprinkling of loose brick-slips provided as part of the ruined wall kit: All of which frenetic activity left it looking like this: Thanks for watching, as always
clive_t
Another day, another step closer to completion... The second brick barrier was fixed in the required position. I also bedded everything a little: The stuff I used to do the bedding in came about as the beneficial result of a complete accident... Many instances of happy accidents throughout history, of course: Alexander Fleming accidentally left the window of his laboratory open one night, and discovered penicillin; Abraham Lincoln flew a kite whilst a thunderstorm raged all around him, and discovered... that flying kites in a thunderstorm was not good for the constitution For myself, this morning I accidentally discovered that the many months of accumulated dried paint currently clogging the filter at the back of my spray booth is in fact a most excellent earth-coloured dust: Now earlier this week, I had another of my many rushes of blood to the head, wherein I thought that I would try and adorn part of the scene with a badly damaged swastika flag. They appear to be quite difficult to come by through the shops, so I thought I would try and make one myself. I made use of some 'Galeria' Heavy Carvable Modelling Paste - very like PVA in appearance, but retains its white colour once dry, and is very flexible. I spread some onto a polythene bag, and left it for a day to dry. Having then carefully peeled it from the bag, it looked like this: As you can see it suffered some damage in the process, but given that I wanted a ripped and generally trashed flag, I didn't regard this as a big problem. This morning I made a mask to retain the white colour for the circle in the middle, from some wide Tamiya masking tape: I then sprayed the thing with Games Workshop 'Blood Red' - seemed appropriate, somehow - and removed the mask. This proved something of a challenge, as I had reckoned without the effects of the sticky surface of the tape on the flimsy sheet. Even more damage ensued: I then hand-painted a swastika on the remains of the white circle - with a somewhat shaky hand, it must be said: With some matt varnish brushed on to tone down the sheen of the paint, I then did a dry run with the flag draped over the rubble pile: Finally, I placed some pieces of wood - some of which was again supplied with the ruined building wall kit - around the place: I'm still in two minds about the flag at the moment - however it's not fixed so is easily removed. It might help to make my mind up if I give it a bit of an air-brushing and some of my patent 'dust' Thanks for looking in 7

Redcoat2966
Hi Clive, thought this was interesting.....I saw someone mention a this on forum, might be on here - somewhere anyway, for making flags.....I might try it out one day. http://www.homecrafts.co.uk/inkjet-cotton-lawn-washable-a4-pack-of-5?gclid=CjwKCAiAn5rUBRA3EiwAUCWb21pzF0HJto6btiDQG1QPKP8azhpI_vEgIXJMzjISIZLxzuv2Fh-dzBoC0coQAvD_BwE
clive_t
Looks interesting, I guess if you had a bunch of designs, enough to fill an A4 sheet, that could be a goer! Thanksfor the link, I might just follow that up. clive_t
More faltering steps this evening. I cut down the flag to make it narrower, and tried to give it an impression of being burnt round the edges. I also scattered a bit more dirt and dust and little bits of loose stone around the rest of the street: Unfortunately I think I've overdone it with the scorch marks on the flag Everything aside from the brick rubble mounds is still loose, though, so I hope to be able to rescue it. If not, I just won't use it. I also made a start on painting the faces and hands of the two Airfix figures. A base of Tamiya Flat Flesh, followed by some shading using oils (burnt sienna and titanium white, thinned): I need to let that go off for a couple of days before adding some lighter highlights. Still, it's a start
Ratch
I agree about the flag, just cut two 'clean' sides - I can't image one being burnt all around the edges. Looking good otherwise Edited February 20, 2018 by Ratch
clive_t
Thanks Ratch, you're right. No matter, I will respray the red colour and hopefully it'll look better - if not, no great problem I can just leave it off.
Soeren
Amazing looking scene. The wall and rubble look fantastic. Great paintjob and weathering as well.

Sgt.Squarehead
Awesome project, loving it.....But I'm not a fan of that flag (at all, even slightly). Toilet paper was scarce during the war and flags are soft.....Plus it's what that particular design is most fit for, IMHO. Just don't see British troops draping their position so.....Plus it strikes me as a fairly good way of attracting 500lbs of 'serious trouble' from above.
clive_t
It's a fair point you make, Sarge... I may yet end up leaving it off anyway, as I can't get the folds to look right because it's too thick.
clive_t
More progress today. The dio base is more-or-less done: Before fixing the wood beams etc in place, though, I couldn't resist a quick dry run with the two Airfix figures: I also made some progress with the scratch-built figure, which I will post about on the other thread later... Thanks again for your interest and comments, always welcome!
clive_t
Some more progress on the two Airfix bods today. I had a go at painting the camo on the Denison smock, which didn't turn out too bad. I also painted the other figure in the regular khaki garb: Quite pleased with how they're looking at the moment, but still more to do once the paint dries properly. Getting there, though!
clive_t
I repainted the berets as they looked more purple than burgundy. I also gave the figures a sepia wash and a dry brushing of Tamiya Deck Tan. Finally, a coating of matt varnish all over to dull everything down: I am in two minds whether to try and paint some kind of badge on the berets, e.g. Paras. There are decals for the rank stripes, so I might try and include some of those just to finish them off.
clive_t
Well, this evening our man was finally rewarded for his patience with the promised beer: The other chap got a field promotion, to the heady heights of Lance Corporal. The gun is now glued to the dio base, but the figures are just loose fitted at the moment: All we need now is the Dutch teenager! Wonder where he's got to?
