PATTON TANK STGB Chat

Recommended Posts

Did a bit of work on my Patton today. I added a few parts that are needed in place for some sandbags. My ultimate goal is to build this tank. MEQuQ96.png

At least as close as i can get to it. This is another possible addition i plan on doing, all the smoke grenades.

My alternative choice is this M48a3.03EN1Hi.jpg

I really like the dual Ma Deuce mount & the umbrella. So i added the few pieces that would be needed under the sandbags. Fender supports, auxillary exhaust, light brackets, storages bins on the fenders, & the Board between the two light brackets. I added only the visual stuff, what is shown on the instructions in these next two photo’s.

That should keep me under the 25% rule. This is what it looks like currently. Before the work, ⬇️

and after the work is finished. ⬇️

As you can see not much was done but it is needed. This so i can mold the sand bags around the odds & ends. During the build i may decide to add more bags on the turret, but not sure yet ?

Hmmm

what, if anything decent is out there in 48th scale?

...

Wasn't there a Pershing by Tamiya?

An M60 would be my choice.... but...

There is this one.

Those are actually both the same kit dating back a very long time. Despite the reviewer's optimism it would be easier to scratch-build one using some of the Pershing detail bits. It's OK for a youngster who cares not a jot about accuracy but otherwise....No.

Hi Guys

I would like to participate in this Group Build

Have found deep in my stash an Italeri M 60 A1 and a Tank Conversion Accessory  by Lo Model(?)

Not well up on US armour but this should turn it into an M 60 A3 version

Cheers

Hello Keith @KAYELL .. You are more than welcome to join us, Thank you for the interest Im looking forward to seeing your M60a3. Must admit ive never heard of Lo models ? Looking forward to seeing what the parts look like.

Dennis

Lo Model did not do much in their brief existence in the late 90s-early 2000s. Just this set, some modern Soviet Infantry, and a jet trainer. They were from Taiwan. I recall this set being popular at the time, as it allowed the making of late variant US and German M48s, and the M60a3 if you had older base kits, without resorting to having to cannibalize another full kit to get the parts you needed. Mostly irrelevant today, but they're still floating around out there.

Many thanks for your greeting to the groupbuild

I enclose images of the Lo Models conversion kit.

The kit is not the most detailed and as Asmodai posted they did not last for too long

Cannot tell whether I will actually use any of the kit, depends on how it builds, anyway there will only be a small amount used to make the A3 conversion

Will have to wait another six weeks or so to find out

Cheers

For my build most of the parts will be 3D printed, it's a slow process so it could take a month or more to print everything. So I was wondering if I could start printing the parts now, then start actual construction during the group build?

Hello @Mig Eater... I have been following your work over in the Mk.IV build. Before your Mark IV i hadn't seen anything that big being printed as a sub-assembly and used. I had seen whole models 3-d printed but not sub-assemblies. I have no issues with you printing your work ahead of the start date. I wonder if @Plasto my co-host has anything to say on the matter ? I would think you may do the CAD work and start printing. Test fit everything but do not assemble more than the standard 25%. It would be nice to see the work you do. However its to early to start a build thread of course. Maybe you could show the work here in the chat ? I did that myself when doing a little pre-assembly.

The Panzer IV K was only 12 parts & it took three weeks to design & print. The T92 will probably be something like 100+, so even if I start now I doubt that I'll even have 25% of the parts printed in time for the start 😛 Have just been looking at some after market Pershing tracks to see if I can save time from having to print the 188 individual links that are needed, because the T92 used a stretched hull though none of the sets have enough links!

Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

I think  it’s no problem to start printing now for assembly during the GB.

Most GB’s feature kit set builds. So what is effectively a scratch built project is nice to see.

Its also a new technology being showcased in the GB which I think is a cool thing.

I'll be joining in with this GB, I'll be building an academy  1/35  idf  m60 a1 blazer, the kit looks  pretty decent as is, but I don't know much about the idf versions,

and have been looking for resin Stowage and, or, photo etch detail parts, I can't seem to find much at all, any help, and links would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers,

Glynn

Hello Glynn... I have added you to the list. Thank you for your interest and joining in. Check out Legends resin. They make a number of resin stowage sets including ones specifically for IDF. The examples given are from Sprue bros. In the USA. I'm sure Hannants or a direct order from Legends would be possible as well. The M60a1 in IDF service is known as the Magach 5. That might help in your searching. The Wiki. entry is to help you look for Magach versions.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magach

These are A/M sets that might help if going through Hannants or other than Sprue Bros. The codes/descriptions should give you a base to start from.

Hello @Churchill ... Welcome to the Group build. Im looking forward to seeing your super pershing. I believe you could scratch build the tubular gubbins. Its possible you may even want to consider 3-d printing the parts ? Places like Shapeways is a good place to check into for stuff like that.

The armour modifications look like they'd be a fairly simple scratchbuild, which is what appealed to me. It's just that the external recoil springs need to be scratched too and they're not terribly clear in any of the photos I've seen so far (they were apparently a temporary solution, and the model I have is of a later version where they'd moved the springs inside the turret where they belong). I do have the Osprey M26/M46 book, which has a reasonable drawing. Will mull it over, I think.
