1/72 Hasegawa B-26B Marauder "Flak Bait"

Recommended Posts

Dear fellow Britmodellers,

here's my 1/72 Hasegawa B-26B Marauder, built from the box, with the addition of Quickboost gun barrels (QB72088) and True Details wheels (TB72026).

I chose to represent 'Flak Bait', a well-known and well-documented aircraft from 449th Bomb Squadron, 322nd Bomb Group, operating from an airfield in England,  1944/1945..

'Flak Bait' flew 202 missions until the end of the war.

There's a number of original photographs on the internet, depicting 'Flak Bait' in various stages of weathering and in different weapon configurations.

I tried my best to replicate what I've seen.

Hasegawa's gorgeous boxtop artwork was used as a guideline, too.

I painted with colors from Tamiya (XF-17) and Gunze/Mr.Hobby (H52, H53).

Photographs by Wolfgang Rabel, IGM Cars & Bikes.

Thanks for your interest, greetings from Vienna

Roman

Quite a lot of nose weight was required to prevent a "tail-sitter":

Assembly was easy, as the Hasegawa kit has a very decent fit.

I started painting with the base color, Aluminium.

Then I applied Olive Drab to the upper surfaces and Grey to the undersides.

Paint chips were done using Vaseline creme.

One of my all-time favourite aircraft and my next major aircraft project (the same boxing of this kit). Love this build and glad to read that it didn't fight you during the construction. Great model Roman, hope mine comes-out that well.

What a nice model! Those Hasegawa 1:72 WW2 kits really make wonderful models.

There's a lot that I like and some things that I'd do different.

I'd put a gun in the nose - it looks more interesting.

I wouldn't fade the Olive drab so much and I wouldn't go so far on chipping effect.

I'd leave the upper turret unpainted as they were i reality.

Otherwise its wonderful and more detailed than 1:48 Monogram kit.

Been in the wars, that one!  Superb job!  Could you describe the vaseline process please?

Yes!

I can recommend this technique, as there is no risk of damage to the paint or the plastic.

It is easy to obtain and easy to use (compared with more 'professional' weathering products).

You might substitute Vaseline for Nivea Créme or even Marmite (that brown stuff from down under).

First, spray the basecoat (Aluminum) all over.

Next, apply the chosen créme on the surface with a brush.

Vaseline is transparent, so the only problem is, you don't really see what you're doing.

Concentrate on those areas which will receive the most tear & wear (leading edges, engine panels, etc.).

Work step-by-step, do not cover the whole airframe with Vaseline - if you put your finger in it you'll end with prints (personalized modelling then!).

Here's how I did, starting on the inside, and working my way to the outer edges:

To remove the créme, you simply tack tape over the surface and pull off again:

I repeated the same process on the fuselage, starting on the front side:

Wow you really captured the look of a war wearied B-26👍

How well did the kit fit❓

Great job 😎

Mr.Happy(In name only)

The Hasegawa kit has a very good fit and engineering, the only areas needing a little attention was the fuselage spine that has some sink-marks.

Easy enough to rectify.

I reckon this kit will make you happy, Mr.Happy!
