Going for, 2x ECM pods on wingtips, 2x R-73, 4x OFAB-250, 2x KH-31, 2x KH-29 and 2x R-77. (the above pictures show R-27s on the intake pylons but these are being replaced with the KH-29s.

Looks a nice kit, hopefully it's a bit easier to assemble than the Academy offering.

I really like this scheme, can't wait for this one to unfold

Cheers.

Made a brief start today by building up the ordnance:

The plastic parts have nice detail and went together with no issues. Just need to clean up the join lines. The Brassin bombs are of Eduard's usual excellent quality.

Hopefully a better update to come soon!

Managed an hour at the bench today. Cockpit assembled and ready for paint:

The detail is fairly good. I moved onto the upper fuselage. There are a few small ejector pin marks on the wings which I thought was a bit odd, easily sorted though. The airbrake was added - the fit isn't great:

Some sanding required to get it to sit flush. I moved on and looked at the exhausts. I've been toying with the idea of ordering an aftermarket set but having looked at the kit parts, I'm happy enough with their detail:

More soon.

Airbrake was worth the effort, does look a good level of detail in cockpit, good bit of work for an hour! Re your ordnance, is that everything that came in the kit or is that the load out you’ve picked? My SU-33 has a lot but it all can’t go on 😓 and the instructions actually detail what can go with what and what can’t

Cheers. There's some ordnance left over - 8x R27, 2x R-73, 2x R-77 and 2x KH-29.

The addition of the OFAB-250's will give me a load out loosely based on images that I have seen of the jets.

More done. Cockpit painted, detailed, glossed and given a light wash:

37969889691_6cc94d3b61_b.jpg

Moved on and installed it, along with the front landing gear bay and inner portion of the exhausts to the fuselage halves, then closed up:

37939422472_e37a159226_b.jpg

The fit was fine. One of the nice details about this kit is the static dischargers on the wings and stabilisers. However, Hobbyboss decided that the best place for mounting pin for the small protective sprue covering the wing examples was on the inside of the wing - thusly you can't close the wings up without removing it! I can foresee those tiny parts going mussing at some point...

Some sub assemblies:

One not so good part of this kit is the horizontal stabilisers. On the real thing, the rams that operate these are part of the tail fin assembly - the rams extend and retract from/to the base of the tail fin (seen here on this MKM). Hobbyboss have moulded these in place on the tail fins (triangular bits below and to the rear of the rudder) so one can't display the stabilisers in any other pose than bang on level, which is annoying as I like to dip these slightly.

More soon.

It looks similar to how Zvezda constructed their Su-27SM in 1/72.

Here is what i did a few years ago:

First I sawed off the extensions (rams?). Then, after cleaning the now separated parts, i glued a shim made from

plastic on the removed part (sorry, no picture).

After cleaning up and adjusting the separated parts i glued them back in place and added finally the horizontal stabilisers.

All i had to do was to keep an eye on the angle so the parts were matching.

It think it is an easy and quick solution.

Nice and instructive progress!

I have this kit in the stash, but was not too impressed... yours look good, so maybe I'll change my mind and build it!

What do you think of the nozzles?

In nee of a replacement?

Thanks mate , Might give that a go. I've actually seen one or two pictures with a slight drop in the flaps but level stabilisers.

Cheers. It's not a bad kit, i'd say it's better than the Academy offering, but there are some niggling issues as listed above. I'm in two minds about the nozzles. The turbine part is hidden so no issues. I initially thought the nozzles were acceptable but i keep looking at them thinking they could be better.

  • 2 weeks later...

More done. Intakes, leading edge slats, nose cone and wingtip ECM pods added. I had planned to leave the nose cone off until the airframe was painted but the slightly off fit dictated otherwise. The one piece intake trunks are very good:

Wolfpack K-36 seats:

Coming together well. Next up will be to clean up the filler and add the tails etc.

More soon.

Looks really good!

Like the nose...shape seems ok!

How  do you rate the WP seats?

Cheers.

Yes the nose shape is good, no need for a resin replacement. I think the Wolfpack seats are fine. Maybe not just as good as Neomega or Quickboost but certainly better than other offerings.

More done today and the airframe is nearing completion. First job of the day was to remove the triangular plates on the side of the intakes. The HB instructions have these added, however the real thing doesn't (only noticed them today, otherwise they wouldn't have been glued on!)

Popped off with a knife, sanded and locating holes filled. One of the smaller jobs was to make dual pylons for the OFAB-250 bombs. So I cobbled some together from parts from the spares:

26469936749_49c1ded80e_b.jpg

Moved on and cleaned up the filler, then added the flaps and pylons:

37535057874_facb552147_b.jpg

A dry fit of the tail fin/horizontal stabiliser assembly has shown that it will not be a great fit. Will have to fashion something to allow the parts to sit correctly.

More soon.

I like your scratch double rack pylons!

I guess this is Eduard's pylons, no?

Cheers mate.

The dark grey parts could well be - they were in the spares box, can't remember where they came from.

More done. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the HB tail fins come with the horizontal stabiliser extensions moulded in place, not allowing for the stabilisers to be dipped in anyway. After some dry fitting, I found that even in the neutral position, the extensions did still not sit flush on the stabilisers. A poor show by HB. So I cut off the extensions:

Inserted a small bit of plastic, added the shaved off bits at an angle, then closed up with filler:

37653237674_03ba7e5710_b.jpg

Not 100% but will do. The dual rack pylons were then added to the airframe, and everything given the once over:

Areas have been masked off in preparation for painting.

More soon.
