825
At the weekend I was tidying out some things I have in storage and sorting through some stash duplicates, I came across this I never realised I had it as this stuff went into store some 5/6 years ago and I had forgotten about quite a few things (Fujimi Wasp, some CMR resin Seafires and a Fairey Delta prototype by Maquette amongst the gems). Looking back at my DH GB experience with the delightful ease of the Tamiya Mosquito against the taxing modelling of the Special Hobby Sea Hornet, I thought this could be a light diversion, with it's hoped 'shake and bake' build compared with the old Airfix kit currently on the go. There are three sprues and a transparency. The plastic isn't brilliantly crisp and there quite a few ejector pins but most seem not to be visible, apart from some on the undercarriage doors. The blue plastic is a nightmare as it is pretty dark. There are transfers for two Gloss Sea Blue options, one Hammy Gray's of the Pacific Fleet and one from an escort carrier of the East Indian Fleet (I think). They have yellowed and so have been popped on the window sill to get sun bleached. instructions are typical Hasegawa.
825
And here we are with some paint on the details. The dark colour of the plastic makes it a challenge to see how it's going, but I usually give at least two thin coats so another session is in order. Also the aluminium paint on the undercarriage has revealed some moulding seams which will need gently scraped and sanded smooth
CliffB
It looks like it should indeed be a little easier than the old Airfix Cliff

Mind you overall Gloss Sea Blue can be a bit of a challenge painting with a brush.

825
I've done a bit of slapping paint onto all the little bits, undercart bays, interior etc.. Then this morning I thought a quick overall thin coat of Gloss Sea Blue might be in order. And my goodness what a difference. I know everything is still on the sprue but one thin coat has transformed the plastic. Xtracrylix thinned with Flow Improver brushed on really thin with a flat wide brush if anyone is interested.
825
Cockpit finished with addition of some Eduard seat belts. Then raced ahead. Slotted the cockpit and IP into the fuselage. The fuselage closed up a treat, almost no seams and on went the tail planes. Popped the intakes into the lower wing roots and assembled the wings and then after cutting off the wing tips added them to the fuselage. Some tape needed to keep everything in place till the glue dries. Oh and I have assembled the engine. Wing edge the fit is excellent as almost no seam is discernible. And here's the clipped wing and sawn off tips. Edited September 24, 2017 by 825
SoftScience
That is pretty nice. Another coat of blue once all the gluing is done?

A little bit of filler and some sanding. Also smoothing off a few glue marks

825
Almost there now, despite a really busy week. All the sticking out, hanging down parts added and paint touched up where necessary, the prop painted and transfers on, and the canopy masked ready for painting. A couple of short sessions over the next couple of days should see this powerful lady finished Canopy just placed on, it needed a tiny bit of sanding around the edges to fit properly

It's coming together very nicely. Is there a knack to thinning with flow improver? When I tried it with my Winsor and Newton stuff I struggled with bubbles. A few drops is fine, any more, problematic. John.

When I tried it with my Winsor and Newton stuff I struggled with bubbles. A few drops is fine, any more, problematic. John. Im not sure if there's any particular knack. I tend to start with 10% Flow Improver, i.e adding about 1ml to a bottle of Xtracrylix, Humbrol, Revell Aquacolour or whatever and stirring well. I aim for a consistency of thin single cream. I then use a fairly large brush or a flat brush and apply really thin coats. There sometimes bubbles but the Flow Improver retards drying so you can usually brush them out. You also get a little time to 'lay off' as you would do with an enamel, albeit not as long. Stop as soon as you feel any resistance as the paint will streak and it will have to be sanded back before another coat. It usually takes about 4 coats. It does evaporate with time so whenever the paint starts to dry out too quickly add a few more drops of Flow Improver to get the consistency back to thin cream. I use a 1 ml syringe to measure. Hope this is helpful.
johnd
Very helpful, thanks. You also answered another question too, whether it's ok to add the flow improver to the paint pot when it's first opened. Bonus! John.

There's a raw power about them that most FAA beasts don't have. Apart maybe until we reach the Sea Vixen.
