Anyone got the 1/32 Tamiya P-51D/K in the stash?

Every manufacture includes the 75 gallon teardrop shape drop tank with their P-51 but Tamiya is the only one that also produce the larger 110 gallon drop tank used in the Pacific.

I would like a 1/48th scale 110 gal tank, so would anyone with the Tamiya D/K mind measuring the tanks for me? The major dimensions would be very useful - length, width and height.

Greetings, I'm not sure if you know but the old Monogram 1/48 F-80 Shooting Star kit has a pair of these 110 gallon drop tanks of the type that were used on the Iwo Jima based P-51D's.   That might be easier than scratch building them.

Thanks I was aware of that, as I've seen it mentioned before in discussions about this drop tank, but it's not the easier of kits to get this side of the Atlantic, though there is one on ebay but not that cheap and I'm not even sure how accurate they are. Maybe it's time to look at 3D printing?

Looking at that data sheet again, is this the same tank? This one is made of three separate sections and not split hozizontally down the middle, where the other tank which I'm after, which is in the Tamiya kit, appears constructed the same as the 75 gal tank in two halves. Never seen one like this, though they may of had the same dimension.

You are correct, the photos I have seen of these 110 gallon tanks on Iwo Mustangs show the two piece horizontal split.    Have you seen the 7th Fighter Command web site?   It has a treasure trove of Iwo Mustang photos.

Search for A4522 - A4526  there are photos of these tanks.

I do have the Tamiya 1/32 P-51D Pacific Theater boxing so I can take some measurements when I get home tonight.  It is a bit strange that this is the only time any kit manufacturer has included these tanks in P-51D model kits.

For us 1/72 scale builders, Obscureco makes some resin 110 gallon tanks.

Thanks for the link I haven't seen that galley before.

Some one over on Hyperscale just measured the Tamiya tank for me which comes out at 69.5 mm x 21 mm which is pretty close to the dimensions on that data sheet.

Mike West of Lone Star Models does some 1/48th scale 110 gal tanks in 1/48th, but because he has a minimum order it makes them very expensive for those of us in the UK ( due to import taxes and charges ).

I dug out the 1/32 Tamiya Pacific Theater Mustang and took some measurements of the 110 gallon tanks.  Sorry, I took the meaurements in inches.  Hope that won't mess you up.

Top piece

L = 2.73"  it is the one with the rim

W = 1.81"

H = .390"

Bottom piece

L = 2.69"

W = 1.78"

H = .390"

Typical American ;) !

But seriously that's great, thanks for doing that. The only thing I don't get is your width measurement - 1.81/1.78"?  Surely that's far too wide? Being a round tank it should be closer to 0.78" ( sum of the two halves ). Did you mean 0.81/0.78"?

Tbolt,

You are correct, the force is no longer with me when using an old school analog dial caliper.  Width should have been 0.81" for top half and 0.78" for bottom half.

And some you see on National Guard F-51's

(I think there is a 110 gal version of this one too.)

Hello Gwart,

Do you happen to have the drawing for the 110 gallon version of the 75 gallon tank you've posted a picture of here by Sargent Fletcher?

Thanks,

Brady

Hi Shane,

OK, Thanks another friend and I have guesstimated on ours too. From our research we believe these tanks are actually a version that wasn't as popular of tip tanks for the F-80 and RF-80. They actually seem to appear more on an RF-80 but dang are they pretty much impossible to find information on.

Thanks for the info!

Cheers,

Ah these are similar to the ones you see on postwar RCAF mustangs.They are pretty much identical to the wingtip mounted ones on the Merlin engined Cavalier Mustang.

These are the ones i made from modified Draken tanks.

These are the ones similar to P/F/RF-80 tanks.In 1/72nd scale i think the Sword P-80 family has them on the sprue.
