It does help I suppose LOL.

Primer looks good! Will you use black primer on the exterior as well?

Cheers

Jaime

No, I won`t Jaime, it`s me being lazy and trying to pre shade the inner details.

Also the cockpit is black inside so thats why I sprayed the canopy, next with a coat of aluminium.

Well, I managed to spray a bit more primer around this afternoon although is was quite chilly with the window open, and yes I remembered to switch the booth on this time.

And surprisingly not so much smell in the room this time. LOL.

No pics as the broad band is still snails pace but "Open Reach " are visiting tomorrow to try and sort out the problem.

Until then, keep warm and safe.

Spray booth?

Switch on?

I'm living on the wrong planet

Hmm Christmas beckons doesnt it

The interior isnt all black I expect you know

This is the interior of the Sunderland in Hendon, verified by my dad who flew many long sorties in them from Pembroke Dock in the war

His job?

Man the galley keep the tea flowing and

Replenish depth charges after they had been used, there were spares on racks inside and winches to bring the  used racks inside for working on

Dad was an AG and armament tech type

5_Ace_Hendon_257.jpg

The black in the cockpit is confirmed but he wasnt sure about the silver painted bit "Must be from restoration, our end was green"

I will take this away if you like or I could post the internal winching pics if you want them

Thanks for the clarification. I asked because I'm planning to use black primer as a pre-shade in some of my builds: in the winter camouflaged Bf-109 flown by Hartmann and in the MiG 29A that are currently on hold. I'll probably apply a "marble" layer over the black primer (using various greys, at least) to create some tonal variations on the camouflage colours.

Cheers

These photos of a Mk I, show silver (even though B/W) in the ward Room and Bomb bay

Per IWM photos

What a Sunderland colour wise looks like in the interior (model display taken from our  Sunderland at MOTAT)

As far as Depth Bombs/Charges, WWII Pilots I have spoken to/read after action reports etc, mentioned that they carried

a Standard load of 8 munitions. Having spares/racks must have been a squadron decision, I note that the Mk I/II/III

Sunderland manuals, specify that racks for storage plus a trestle for loading, were by special order from Shorts.

Thanks Perdu and LDS for the info.

Yes I knew that the interior was not N.Z. (All Black) , I was trying out some ideas for future builds, i.e. lazy pre-shading.

Well, on with the build I suppose.

I laid down some Aluminium Tamiya XF 16 first.

P a P 4

P a P 6

It looked a bit bright, so added some XF 56 to the mix.

P a P 9

P a P 12

P a P 13

P a P 14

P a P 15

That gave a duller hue, which I wanted.

I know that the floors are not Aluminium colour, there will be some interior green going over some of it.

I can then scratch/remove some of the green to show wear and tear.

Well, that`s it for the weekend, we have our mother visiting so bench time.

All comments welcome.

Hi Simon,

Coming along nicely!!!

If it's any help to you (i.e less painting) The floor area above the bomb bay ( sloping roof/flat roof) is silver as in this photo,

so you could leave as is -The rear half would be RAF Interior Green

If you are so inclined, the flooring on lower deck, including bomb bay is a blue grey - you can see in this galley photo

This is the Bomb bay floor/substructure, you can see the floor leading to the galley.

As a bit of trivia, the flooring on a Sunderland was re-moveable (as in photo) to allow the crew to assess how much water

was in the bilges (pre-flight SOP), and pump out if only a little OR if there was a lot, call for immediate beaching:huh:

Happy building

Thanks for the info again Alan, much appreciated.

Q. Are the interior sides of the front fuselage (excluding the cockpit area) RAF Interior Green, or Blue Grey.

I am going to try out the "Hair spray" idea for weathering the floors etc.

Something I have read about and want to try out before using it on a "BIG KIT" , maybe the Airfix Typhoon MK 2 which I have lurking in the stash.

Thanks again for the info mate, it really is helping this old duffer .

Hi Simon,

Happy to help :D

The front part of the Sunderland (all marks) were Silver to the inner face of the forward bulkhead as this photo,

you can see the Stairwell back, flooring is the grey blue to this point

0040b93e-375b-499d-bf35-d5d5ddb379af.jpg

In the bow deck area RAF Interior Green walls and deck/sub structure

Special note as in this photo, note forward face of forward bulkhead + stairwell is RAF Interior Green,

but doors are Silver

Hope that helps?

I've been slow to catch up with this Simon but all up to date now.:D

Just wanted to express my admiration for your masking skills; knowing how hard a job that is to get convincingly right you should feel most pleased by the results you've achieved there.

The interior colouring is coming along in a very handsome fashion indeed.

Bravo!

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, it looks like I am not going to be able to meet the dead line Jaime.

I am sorry about this but life just got in the way.

Anyhow, I shall proceed.

Right, internals of fuselage...

Insides done, a bit shabby in places but no one will see.

PF 1

Engines finished, Med Grey on the gearbox, then washed and varnished.

PF 2

Props... 5 of them, well one is for the Spitfire I am building as well.

P a P 17

They have give a coat of darkened Aluminium then NATO Black.

Just the tips to do, the "Ced Way".

More to do but will keep posting.

All comments welcome.

OK folks, back again quick update.

While working on the Port wing , there was a hole to be opened right next to the inner engine nacelle for the exhaust pipe.

This however was a PITA, ending up with this horrid hole (Look away if easily offended)

UH 1

The fit was not that good, so time for a think.

Plug it,(I can say that on BM?) so I made a plug out of some runner.

UH 2

And the epoxied it into place.

UH 3

Leave to set and attack tomorrow.

Hi Simon,

Good progress!

Don't worry too much about not finishing your build within the GB deadline. I probably won't finish mine as well. It's more important to participate and finish the build properly.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Yes, as above. I want to see a nice finished Italeri Sunderland with  it's  battled and conquered mad trenches  on the surfaces. So, a nice new year from Germany by me . Cheers Benedikt

Otherwise you could get into hell's kitchen by all others here:
