jrlx
When analysing the instructions last night, I've found, to my dismay, that the upper camouflage is RLM72/73 and these colours aren't available in my Gunze range of paints. They only seem to be available as Vallejo Modelair refs. 71263 and 71256, respectively. Has anyone used these paints before? I've only used the Azure Blue from the regular Vallejo Model series and it was a bit fragile, prone to be damaged by masking tape. I've found a series of confusing alternatives for these RLM colours: RLM72 FS37030 FS34056 FS34058 (designated "bottle green" but which one exactly?...) apparently Tamiya's XF-17 is an equivalent but how far from RLM72? RLM73 FS36081 (Gunze H301) FS34092 (Gunze H302) I'll try to source the Modelair paints from my LHS but, if unsuccessful, are there any opinions on the Tamiya and Gunze alternatives based on the FS colours above? Thanks Jaime
stevehnz
Humbrol 243 for RLM72 & 244 for RLM73 are decent matches to several of the published colour charts. Not sure how you go for getting these in Portugal, maybe they can help with a cross reference. Steve.
CedB
Hi Jaime. I use the Model Air a lot and it's been fine for me but NOT with their primer, which is horrid IMHO. I use Stynylrez primer all the time now and recommend it. Another BMer pointed me at the RLM colour reference on Finescale. That suggests some Tamiya colours, XF-26 & 27 and also Colourcoats but the chart doesn't seem to include Model Air, just Model colour, so it may be out of date. Peter Hawkin posted his pretty comprehensive paint chart here. Those greens look pretty similar eh? HTH
amblypygid
What Ced said, Jaime. I've never tried using Vallejo's primer, but I use VMA with Stynylrez, or sometimes without primer, and have not had a problem with lifting paint.
corsaircorp
Hello Jaime, These ones for you, The last mission of a guy from Malmedy was flying that thing to Königsberg to evacuate germans trapped there by the russians. And he did so with the cover escort of Tempest Sqdns, Not told in history books but there were some skirmishes with red stars. They just have a big white disc to cover the black cross just a green plain cross on it. Fun German Aircraft protected from the russians by english fighters ! History is fascinating ! Sincerely. jrlx
Steve, Ced, Chris, CC, Thanks for the recommendations and references. I'm now back home. I'll take a look at the possible alternatives, as I have the Gunze and Tamiya paints referenced. If they look ok together, I'll use them. Otherwise I may find the VMA paints in one of the LHS here in Lisbon. Regarding primer, I'll use Alclad Black Primer, as I intend to use it for pre-shading. Probably with a coat of "marbling" using a few shades of very diluted greys. Pat, Thanks for your interest and for the good wishes. pheonix
Jamie, I am relieved that you are another one who has barely started! Having just read the posts of those who have started and in some cases nearly finished I was beginning to get worried! Serious research before you begin is laways recommended in my experieice - at least that is my excuse. Looking forward to seeing when you really start to cut plastic. jrlx
Calling it "research" is a good excuse for not having started yet But yes, I tend to spend inordinate amounts of time researching my modelling subjects. In fact I've just returned home from holidays on Sunday night and I'm also building a MiG 29 for the type's GB, which takes precedence, as it ends on 1 October. I'm also a slow builder with just a few hours per week available for modelling. But I've already put the Dornier's sprues in a bath of water and dishwasher and took s look at the candidates for the rlm 72 and 73. Hopefully, a few pictures will be posted today. Cheers Jaime 2
jrlx
Hi again, Haven't really started yet but have taken pictures of the sprues and put them in a bath of water and dishwasher. So, here's the box, prior to taking the sprues off the bag: IMAG4929 The sprues of the fuselage, showing it to be a big bird (at least 30 cm long): IMAG4922 The wing parts are equally massive: IMAG4923 There's another sprue with smaller bits and cockpit parts: IMAG4924 and a sprue with transparent parts: IMAG4927 A few bit were loose in the bag but nothing is lost, fortunately: IMAG4926 The kit comes also with a PE fret with cockpit and exterior detailing bits: IMAG4928 The decal sheet is equally large and looks very good. No swastikas, though: IMAG4929 The instructions come in a large fold-out piece of paper: IMAG4930 IMAG4931 The detail in the kit looks good. I still have to check if the machine gun parts are good or not. I can replace the MG 15 by Eduards resin versions if needed but I don't have and don't know of any resin replacements for the dorsal turret MG 151. I also checked the paints I could use for the RLM 72/73 camouflage. As seen in previous posts, and considering the paints I already have, RLM72 can be replaced by Tamiya XF-26 and RLM73 by Gunze H302: IMAG4919 IMAG4920 Look good enough to me: RLM72/XF-26 is a brighter green while RLM73/H302 is duller and slightly darker. corsaircorp
Hello JRLX, Hope that I will not be boring, here are the docs I was talking about ! All is from "Le fana de l'aviation" wich is IMHO the best magazine in french, thoroughly searched, I have a lot of these magazine. The original was from A.R. Chapman Aaaand last but not least .... In the article, they did not speak specifically of combat of Typhoon and tempest against the Yak, But.... Hope that it can help... And now, let's go for the fregate ! Sincerely. Tell me if I create any disturbances through my passion for history. At least that will be a very special Dornier !! It is by far the best modelling-related app I've seen on any OS. Nice update - to me that kit looks good enough to start a full-blown Dornier fetish... stevehnz
I'm so looking forward to seeing this one come together, there is one of these in my future hopefully. Alain, that looks like a fascinating story, I've not heard of it before, unfortunately my French petered out after my 4th form (year 10) & it wasn't crash hot even then. Does anyone know of an English account of this incident? Steve.

It's no bother at all as I'm also deeply interested in History and the stories of the aircraft I build. Hope you don't mind but I'll keep to the scheme that comes with the kit because I really can't resist a Luftwaffe aircraft with RLM 04 (yellow) on it Cheers Jaime

I knew the story since the neighbours of my friend was a gunner on one of these Dornier. Yes there is some English text, I will translate it but in the right forum.... Now in typing A.R Chapman, one can may be find the original text, and there must be some german relations too But I'm not good enough in german laguage, even in being married with one since 17 years Sincerely.
