Hi again,

I haven't been updating this thread but I've been slowly working on this build and have progressed a lot. So, it's time to bring the thread up to date, which might take a few posts over the next few days.

Having painted the underside colour, it was time to mask this colour in order to paint the top camouflage.

First, I delimited the areas to protect, using Tamiya masking tape. Here's a general view of the hull:

With the delimitation done, I filled in the remaining surfaces to protect with masking tape:

I also delimited and protected the lower half of the engine nacelles:

To be continued. Thanks for looking.

Good job Jaime! Crikey, that's a lot of tape... :)

Thanks, Ced! Indeed a lot of tape but I thought it would be more resistant to handling than kitchen cling film.

Thanks, CC! I'm using this method for the first time but I found timing is very important: painting should be done immediately after the chipping fluid has just dried and chipping should be done immediately once the paint has just dried. Otherwise it's difficult to chip the paint and control of the results is very limited.

Jaime, I have only just found this thread, and read it from the start; some really good work on a wonderfully elegant aircraft.  Definitely got my attention.

Thank you very much! The Do 24 is indeed a beautiful aircraft.

Unfortunately, in my brief search online I couldn't find any information on this specific aircraft. From the Group name we can only know it was used for maritime search and rescue operations.

Anyway, I can't resist a Luftwaffe aircraft with yellow under-wing tips, so this will be the chosen scheme

Cheers

Discovered your build right now. Very nice job!

I have one in the stash, which might eventually become a MLD Do. 24K. Much to learn from your work.

Yellow under-wing tips are typical Eastern front markings, suggesting a Black Sea based unit.

I made a brief Google search, finding that a Luftwaffe unit called III. Seenotgruppe did indeed exist and operated in the Black Sea. However, note the difference from the Italeri designation "Seenotgruppe 3". If I understand correctly, the Do 24 may have been on the strength of Seenotstaffel 8, under III. Seenotgruppe.

This thread is way behind the actual build now, as I'm in the weathering phase already.

Anyway, continuing with the thread updating, the next task was masking the underside of the wings. I started by delimiting the edges:

y4moHDxMFx9g7KcuNRrEx7PfXwlLtFlRMmSuzrH0

IMAG5313

Next, I covered the remaining area with kitchen cling-film:

y4mZEhrqcLbaTjkzldUE5zjnvKf47HCwWpCdIoiG

IMAG5314

Here's how the leading edge delimitation between top and bottom surfaces turned out:

y4mor_tZa7lgl8bYml85hIl2p0_14se7JN-zh3j2

IMAG5315

The same for the trailing edge:

y4mvhk_d7pdchjvF4JG-5CXUyO_3W7onYyHDP_ns

IMAG5316

I also masked around the edges of the underside of the elevators but didn't mask the undersides completely:

y4mEZh-6JK2NFYXl13M7eFkmFOv1KSI3n8zfrEfa

IMAG5317

According to pictures of the real aircraft, the wing struts had their bottom extremities painted like the top colour of the fuselage. Here's an example:

Do-24_p449.jpg

I took measurements on the picture and determined the length of each strut that should be painted in the top camouflage colour:

y4ma5zFYKMmgdbjIG_mBzMhKIU1hBt2DMwOIjUUT

IMAG5318

Then, I cut templates of the required width to mark the area to be painted. These templates were wrapped around the corresponding struts:

y4mY3WKNIwgyPEJAMbhYAXfibbjgLVip1s-gdNiL

IMAG5319

The edge of the area to be protected was marked using tape:

y4mh-NOCnA-cTEVJQ_4OLu84LSsLGuKOWwJl2nA2

IMAG5320

Finally, the rest of the strut underside was protected and the template removed, exposing the length to be painted in the top camouflage colour:

y4maqXqRcLanr_r9OvaF2lWHirDNUtPpz0OwBTKg

IMAG5321

Of course, for the lateral struts the top surface was left unprotected, as it will also be painted in the top camouflage colour:

y4myHnwEnSpiGI9aTfVGbJ4Pqai9rJI_9UClW6XM

IMAG5322

The process was repeated for all struts.

Here are the central struts:

y4meNM2C-Z9sLk3TTuik1Bhu1eNHydYqn3Bqw7Br

IMAG5323

and the lateral struts:

y4meaHsBHU0uFTcrl2CnVAcIUF6TVAfi7LBjNKcx

IMAG5324

To finish with the masking, I protected the tips of the propeller rotors:

That's all for now. Thanks for looking.

Claudio,

Thank you very much for your interest and for the information on possible unit to which the individual aircraft I'm building could have belonged. In fact, the unit emblem has the initials "3/S.N.G." around the white seagull, so it may indeed have belonged to 3/Seenotgruppe, instead of Seenotgruppe 3, has identified by Italeri.

Hello again Jaime!

Shades of the GB! I'm so glad to see the work on this continuing!

Immaculate masking (why is something as apparently simple as masking a straight line along a wing edge so damnably satisfying? 😆)

Looking forwards to further paint magic.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your interest and kind words! The build is approaching its final phases. I still have to apply some weathering, using enamels and oils, then apply the matte coat finish and, finally, glue all parts together. This thread is rather behind the build now but with my limited time I've been having to choose between progressing with the build or updating the thread.

I hope to post some updates soon.

Cheers

Jaime

Hi again,

After the work reported in the last update, I was finally ready to start painting the top camouflage. So, I applied a couple of coats of scratching fluid, let it dry for a while, and painted the lighter green:RLM 72. For this I used Tamiya's XF-26.

Here's the result on the fuselage (the starboard sponson wasn't painted, as it will be painted fully in RLM73):

y4mpBvwBf4jQEkx681e5lA_NgOhqasU_0Tzc3xgk

IMAG5326

The paint dried for a while and, then, using wet stiff paintbrushes and a toothpick in places, I scratched the surface:

IMAG5328

y4mIOWYlLwKI4l3XcHgoc_dpcCCCWIM9AUD3xAZO

IMAG5329

I think the drying time I allowed to the scratching fluid and paint was a bit too long, as it was a bit difficult to scratch the paint.

The same approach was followed with the wing: scratching fluid + painting + scratching.

Here's the wing after painting:

The central engine nacelle, which was painted RLM 72, was also painted and scratched:

y4m5JH69AMAFYxg7uZlxN79RZyQP3QegV1mQ5_a5

IMAG5332

Finally, the top surfaces of the wing struts which were RLM 72, were also painted but not scratched:

Hi again,

Here's another update. Having painted the lighter top camouflage colour (RLM 72), it was now time to mask the model in order to paint the darker colour (RLM 73).

I started by delimiting the areas to protect:

IMAG5335

y4mTFHe7LRLt4gXiwp933NRS0U3HoU7ZKNRfkR2a

IMAG5336

Next, I covered the rest of the areas to be protected with a combination of masking tape and kitchen cling film:

IMAG5337

y4mfabRYHjFg1HPDuuA0b2ruuXfMrCpLjt5ChyvC

IMAG5338

I did the same to mask the top surface of the wing:

Hi again,

The model was ready for painting the darker top camouflage colour: RLM73.

In the beginning of the thread I said I'd use Gunze's H308 as an equivalent to RLM73. However, it was too close to Tamiya's XF-26, which I used as RLM72. So, I decided to use XF-27, which was listed as Tamiya's equivalent to RLM73 in the colour conversion chart I looked at initially. The difference between the three colours can be seen in the following pictures:

y4mgZC405yDkL2pnAXy60piRB6d5YRP0PWjyJ-Ya

IMAG5415

y4mSy45G9rC8-aOUEzES1XrgUfBRnNMhaMQQ2fKw

IMAG5416

The painting procedure started by applying a couple of coats of chipping fluid to the areas to be painted RLM73. When the fluid was dry, I applied the RLM73 paint.

When the paint was just dry, I wet the areas to scratch with water and used a stiff paintbrush and a toothpick to produce the chipping. Then, the model was put away to dry fully before removing the masking.

Here's the result on the fuselage:

The masking tape took a bit too much of paint with it here, in the join of the two colours, on the walkway:

IMAG5347

y4mtzNjXKhCudPfvOGr6yexN-Ym8goIn-vw1MY1w

IMAG5348

The masking tape also damaged the underside of the starboard sponson and part of the hull painting just aft of the sponson:

IMAG5349

IMAG5350

y4mwfsM4krlGeoxLNaJZc0QsjoKl8-HvtDRo-vTB

IMAG5351

The damages and excess chipping will be repaired later but, overall, I was quite pleased with the results, even if they can be considered a bit on the heavy-handed side. I managed to get a good mix of chipped areas where metal or primer layer (RLM02) or a combination of the two were visible.

The wing top surface was also chipped but just on the area where the maintenance personnel would walk on.

Painting of the wing struts and other small parts was finished:

As well as of the engine nacelles,  which were also chipped:

Thanks for looking.
