I'm close to 50 and also really nearsighted so, when the arms aren't long enough too see sharp, I just take my glasses off and with the risk of point out an eye or glue things to my face I've solved it that way. As well as being right it makes it look a lot more interesting. My color refererence was this one I'd guess that the Kübelwagen all were in Dunkelgrau when they arrived to Africa. Too much work to mask them inside, seats, instruments etc.. And as you said it gives the model a bit more contrast.
