Spot of the Day Part 2

Recommended Posts

Once again on Bells Line of Road (it's one of the two means of road access between Sydney and the NSW Central Tablelands, and a very popular route for weekend car club runs) last weekend, near Mt Tomah, a vast (like, 50+) gaggle of Porsche 911 and derivatives. Some very tidy stuff among them ... Funny, but there were also about half a dozen Highway Patrol cars following the same route!

On Saturday, this Mini Clubman was in the local supermarket car park.  I had a tomato red one similar though mine was the later 1098cc version.  It was unusually standard (even the steering wheel) apart from faux-GT stripes, rostyles and a centre exhaust.

Then yesterday in the town carpark I saw this Datsun 180 estate

and a nice Mk1 1300L Escort…

That Clubbie is lovely! (as are the other two!)

Driving home this morning passed a parked up 70's ish Yank tank saloon - no idea what it was other than mahoooosive!! (it was parked in a parking bay (or maybe two!) by the roadside & was a good foot wider even than the moderns in front & back of it!!)

An unmolested plain Mk1 Escort 2 door is rarer than most people realise.  Most of those left have been turned into "Mexicos" and "Twin Cams" with a set of Mexico flared arch front wings, smart wheels and the dash panel from the top range Escorts.   I was at a show at South Cerney the other week and haviing had a genuine Mexico I ambled over to one on display which was Mexico-ish!   Anyway, I'd forgotten how small Mk1 Escorts were, indeed cars were much smaller before they were packed with air bags and crumple zones.

Which is exactly what I'd do to that one - with the addition of a 1760 crossflow, twin 40 Webers, Bilsteins on coilovers all round, full cage, bucket seats, harnesses etc.- just like one of the half dozen or so I had 'back in the day'!! ...Except given the prices of even a bog standard one like that these days that'll never be any more than a pipe dream ! :)

I also wish my son & I could afford that Mini, as then we could strip it & put the 1293 engine & all the rally bits from our current ratty 1275 GT into it...!! :D

The Escort look like a clone of the K reg one I had. A great drive (at the time)

I wonder how it would compare with a modern equivalent?

Did I mention that I saw three gritters in convoy on Monday. That time is fast approaching.

Today in Nottingham (Sherwood district) I had a quick revisit with the 1948 Humber I saw the other month. Still lovely.

In the village of Hoveringham, at the pub, a grey series 2 E type in lovely useable condition.

On the A15, Southbound this afternoon, a Silver Ferrari Dino. Gorgeousness!

Or the time has passed - they were out regularly in the ''summer'' trying to stop the tarmc melting!

My son & I test drove a 'replica' Mk1 RS2 a  couple of years back (didn't buy it as I was dubious about how good the shell was - wish I had as it was stupidly cheap given current prices) and I couldn't get over how soft I've become over the last 35 or so years. I thought the steering (no power assistance) was ridiculously heavy, the clutch (competition version) was ridiculously heavy and the brakes (with a disconnected servo as we often did on rally cars) were ridiculously heavy. And with hardly any soundproofing, twin 45 Webers and a large bore exhaust it was a tad loud inside....

I loved it to bits...!!

On local deliveries in Lincoln today and, while I was waiting for the lights to change,

A Black Lotus Turbo Espirit. Gold pinstriping and Turbo lettering.

It looked too good to be original so probably a rebuild.

And, this is going to be a hard one for me to surpass.

In the car park of the Adam and Eve pub about 1400.

You'll have heard of the Brough Superior? T E Lawrence had one.

How about around twelve of them? I lost count!

Number plates from Germany, USA and UK.

AND two Brough Superior cars! Imagine a Morgan half as big again,

a four seater with Deco touches. Gorgeous thing. A Black one & a Blue one.

I've only ever seen a photo of one and that was years ago

And an Ariel. (Not sure which model but it sounded nice) AND a Triumph in full WW2 rig.

There may have been more I didn't notice but we had beer to deliver and the sights were overwhelming.

And then they started some up. The noise and smells were fabulous.

Then we had to go off elsewhere

Today in London, my rare sighting was of a Toyota Mirai in dark blue. That would be the first hydrogen powered car I've seen in the wild - after a check tonight on the interweb it seems that Toyota planned to sell 12 in Britain in 2017 and 15 in 2018 so quite rare. The big vents on the front don't seem as prominent in the flesh as they look in pictures, but equally the photos don't show that it does seem to be quite a big car.

I knew yesterday's classic extravaganza would be hard to follow up.

But there were a couple today knocking around Lincoln.

A Minivan, looking very new in green. It even had those little chrome hoods over the headlights.

A red 1960 Vauxhall Victor in someones front garden.

And I swear I saw a late forties Ferrari in yellow. If not a Ferrari then something very similar.

Hi all,

Last Sunday during a trip to London, I just happened to come across this lot. There was a Bristol meeting at the RAF Museum Hendon and all the cars looked rather nice, some very elegant lines. I turned up as they were handing out awards and they didn't appreciate the loudness of my streetbike…

On my way back home, I stopped off the A41 to snap this modified Toyota AE86 Trueno, complete with massive panel gaps. The IMSA All American Racers paint scheme really sets it off though the London Underground inspired cloth upholstery surely was sickening.

Soz for the poor photo's, my ancient phone only has a 2mp camera.

All the best.

Going to York this morning on A64 and saw a Red M prefix reg Skoda Favorit. Not seen one for years, I think it was the first Skoda with VW mechanicals, but could be wrong.

Further checking reveals I am wrong, it still used a Skoda powerplant. Apparently by the end of 2016 there were  232 left on British roads

If that's the one I think it is (Portiacraft), it caught my eye going past too, but unlike me you managed to get a photo of it. As the saying goes, the best camera is the one in your hand, so well done.

As for me today, not as much interesting stuff on the A1 as usual for a bank holiday, but still a Triumph TR3A, 1930's Rolls and (I think!) a '58 Cadillac coming the other way. But the rarest of all must have been going my way... an apparently rust-free Lancia Beta:

I must admit I thought these only existed in fiction. Even odder, it was out in the rain😨

I saw a Mini 1275GT the other day .  Absolutely mint & looking very 1970s in dark brown with gold stripes .  Recently I've also seen a late 1970s Mini Clubman estate a few times - also a minter in hearing aid beige .

Had an L Reg Favorit as a temporary stand in after my Astra Mk3 (Hateful thing) snapped its cambelt.

It cost me £250 with only 12k on the clock after its first 13 years, I proceeded to do a further 100k in it over the next 5 1/2 years (Some temporary stand in...) with the usual maintenance and repairs.

The later Favorits borrowed some components from the VW parts bin, switches and fuel injection are the ones that spring to mind, the early switchgear was hopeless.

The Felicia was in effect a reworked Favorit which used a couple of VW engines (1.6 petrol and 1.9 Diesel) as well as the old Skoda alloy blocked 1.3.

Then the Octavia and the Fabia came along, the Polo shared the basic platform with the Fabia but the Czech car came first (Always a good way to wind up VW Polo owners) with yet more VW engines but the venerable Skoda lump made its final appearance in a 1.4L guise.

Here endeth the lesson - I'll pick up my anorak on the way out :coat:

I had come across the fact they started using VW bits at the end of production. I currently drive a Citigo, nice little car for what I need it for.

There's a Gilbern Invader at Nocton Heath garage on the A15 just South of Lincoln.

I haven't seen one in years.  (Welsh built & fibreglass & Ford V6 running gear if you don't know)

This one is dark blue with Ford RS alloys, though I remember them on Dunlop alloys mostly.
