F-111C Aardvark

RAAF

Academy 1/48

-Cutting Edge seamless Tripple Plow I intakes

- Eduard seatbelts

- Eduard detail for the nozzle shrouds (for the HB kit actually)

- Montex masks

- Academy BRU rack with Mk-82 bombs (from the E model kit I just received for this purpose.... :banghead: )

Eduard Mk.82 bombs

originally started in the great F-111 STGB, but not finished for many reasons:

I will continue here, hopefully for not too long!

as a summary, just some WIP pics, for more info please refer to the above link!

content of the greatly updated Academy F-111C boxing!

would do the other boxings good as well!

If you go though the GB builds, the newer HobbyBoss kit does not live up to its price and superficail detail unfortunately!

Cutting Edge Tripple Plow I intakes :

the instructions are a badly copied piece of paper, bit the necessary steps to be done are quite easily understood.

IMG_5609_1_1_zpsky421z8p

the intakes are made up of several parts. the main one in white resin, that will ease painting enormously!

IMG_5619_1_1_zpsxt2ivuyl

not the best photo, but the best I could get tonight :)

IMG_5620_1_1_zpsvvtfwtx4

the marked area has to be cut in order to slide in the intakes.

and some minutes later:

IMG_5622_1_1_zpsq25tlmis

only some sanding and fitting was necessary. (the edges of the undercarriage bay needed to be rounded a bit  e.g. )

IMG_5625_1_1_zpsibal9jx2

fit is good, no glue yet!

IMG_5626_1_1_zpsla9wl3pe

intakes glued in, no major problems here :)

IMG_5769_1_1_zpsnvrqxqwz

IMG_5770_1_1_zpskarib07v

engine faces painted as well with a white center hub? at least I found a foto online showing this, and it adds detail :)

engine faces could be a bit cleaner, but this is quite old resin, so lets say it is ok ;)

wing sweep, wings, an so on....

I will try to make the wing swiveling mechanism work AND look decent on a model... I have succeded on a Tornado and a MiG-23, so why not here as well ? This time pylons come into play though....

swiveling mechanism:

I used super glue instead of the proposed screwdriver and plastic melting process...

top surfaces glued on:

that is what we can expect later on:

I glued the top fuselage part and front section together first in order to improve the dreaded joint...

not sure if successful!

20170620_214538_1_1_zpsxgbydxfs

and finally, i am thinking of gluing the upper main fuselage section to the cockpit section first, in order to have a better joint at the most visible part....

engines need a lot of improvement....

no depth ...

IMG_5575_1_1_zps4waqfsfq

and something has to be done to this nozzles and shrouds.... anybody nows how many petals these shrouds actually have? I counted 18 on an F-111C.... HB / Eduard provide 12 outer and ~14 inner petal details.......

IMG_5777_1_1_zpsujwotqyf

no glue yet, but it gets more interesting like this...

IMG_5779_1_1_zpsyrxfgb58

some crude afterburner section added, some old tomcat turbine parts did the rest

taking photos of a dark grey beast without good contrast is a bit difficult....

whatever:

gunship grey is a bit toooooo dark imho....

so,

and some small update as well.....

at least some reason to put up this thread here:

20170815_223046_1

I broadened the main wheels in order to represent the heavy duty ones from the FB and C models

20170815_223122_1

the landing gear part are kit parts! :)

20170815_223503_1

gunship grey lightened, but under a coat of clear coat too dark again.... :(

decaling time!

20171006_223429_1

many long and difficult to correctly put on small walk ways....

as hey are Cartograf printed, no real problem though!

20171006_235435_120171007_003302_1

those gunship grey Aussi Aardvarks were mostly immaculate, the walkways and markings did really stand out and bring the jet to live!

Coming along nicely! I must say, I did prefer them I'm the SEA scheme and, pleasingly, many of those on display now were repainted in the original scheme. A8-132 was even repainted in the ARDU colours (SEA camouflage on top and white under) for display at Edinburgh.

G'day ED, outstanding work going on there!

One small point which is a nitpick, the tail configuration is wrong for MK.82s fitted to the BRU-3A/A (bomb rack). On F-111s, MK.82s should have the tail in a "+" configuration when viewed from the rear instead of the more typical 'X' configuration (as you have them), however when a  Mk.82/84 was suspended as single store directly beneath the wing pylon, the tail configuration was the typical 'X' configuration.

Looking forward to seeing this one finished,

cheers,

Pappy

Hi, thanks for pointing out the bomb issue! Quite late to correct this unfortunately.... will see .... hmmmm :speechless:

Thanks everybody for your feedback and small stories! Unfortunately I never saw one fly.... the closest I came to one was at Duxford where they have an E I think....impressive nontheless!

Edit,

Looking at photos

It seem that this x or + configuration is even more complicated!

f-111d_aardvark.jpg

Front left and right as well as rear bottom only are in +, the rest is in x...or is that due to the mounting on the BRU and they are indeed all +?

G'day ED, they are all '+'.

At first glance the bombs may appear to be 'X' but this is an optical illusion as the LODE14 suspension points are located on the sides of the shoulder mounts (the top rows) which are  angled inward. If you look at the lower mounting points, the suspension points are directly beneath the rack and the bomb tails appear in the '+' configuration,

Thanks, changed them all meanwhile!

Hope joints will not be too visible ...
