I must say that the suggestion you do here has occurred to me. Well, we shall see. For the air deflector, I think I could do it by scratch. But one more time, the main reason of my build disruption is the lack of time, as I was focused on other matters. More, with my wife, we just bought electric bikes and we enjoy this...

With my pro work, difficult to manage several hobbies. The days are only 24 h...

Hi chaps.

 

Since the last update, I scrapped the panel because the cockpit opening was too large and have been doing something that should have been done months ago...making the buck.

 

After transferring the body lines onto an offcut of 3 x 2, I started by drilling-out the cockpit opening. That done, it was time to make a mess... I rough-shaped the buck with an axe, then files and sanding to finish. The grain pattern and offset cockpit opening made it very difficult to "eye-up" for symmetry...:hypnotised:

Then, after tidying up the opening a bit and a bit of grey primer …. HEY PRESTO....

A shame you had to prime it Mr H. I'd have gloss varnished it to bring out the grain, put it on a stick and put it in my display case  !

Beautiful - and my eye-o-meter says it's symmetrical........:smartass:

My compliments , dear Harvey ! The manufacturing of the two fairings should be the next step imho .This proceeding allows an exact adaption according our photos .

Life has been very distracting so it is 8 weeks since my last post...

 

Sorry to hear you broke your new toy. Though you seem to be back on track.

 

The body is looking very convincing. What you do by hand and eye is so impressive. Beats my efforts with computer for speed every time!

For the front cowl, some 40grit sand paper, wrapped around a 40mm tube, soon made a suitable hollow in an offcut of handrail-

Not pretty, I agree..:D, but with annealed ali and my weapon of choice (peen hammer handle), you get this-

I'm reasonably happy with the result, although I think the rolled edge could be done better. The wire is 0,2mm nickel rod.

 

A teaspoon became the perfect form for the seat cowl. Edge only folded on this occasion-

Beautiful result, mind-blowing if I'm honest.

 

To think about the long way we've come from those Italeri / Protar inventions, all the way to this realistic representation of the car... all kudos to you (next to Olivier and Hannes) for making it happen in scale.

Watching your fairing (made with a very different approach, impressive) recalls me memories... I had spent a lot of time to get the right shape.

Your build will be a masterwork, my friend, a piece of art.

Another lesson from Harvey on using common tools (and things that didn't even start out as tools !) to create art. You have an innate talent for that Mr H.

 

A warning though my friend. When you finally complete the last touch, there will be a huge vacuum in your life. Sure, you'll have it to see daily but that's different than climbing all the mountains you have to get it done. Each time you go to the workbench and solve a problem and make parts you get enormous satisfaction (or SHOULD !). But when that stops - if you're anything like me, you'll search around looking for a suitable equivalent and have a hollow feeling. It is a staggering accomplishment to build with your hands what you dream. And very hard to do it again.

 

Listen - pay no mind to my doom-and-gloom ravings. I'm certain your ideas and skills will take you to even higher levels of satisfaction and accomplishment. :cheers:     

 

I just want to be around to see that.

Napier Raillton (Brooklands), or Mr Scaldwell's most divine V8 JAP.

 

I'm strongly leaning towards theJapanesetbh… there's a heck of a lot more reference available on all the little oily bits n' bobs too, than the Raillton. The engine will be a 'mare to fabricate, guaranteed....but, 4 identical V-twins and external cams, etc......bring it on, I say. I love a challenge.:D

If you’re going for the Scaldwell car..... we should compare notes on the JAP, as my next  project is leaning towards John Bolsters Bloody Mary, with only half the number of engines, but still a complex challenge.

After "feathering" the opening edges, I used the teaspoon again to start the roll...
