Fiat 806gp full-scratchbuild 1:12

Recommended Posts

My dear Harvey,

If someone may understand how tasky the creation of this grille has been for you, it's me. I had not done the choice (definitely better) to drill the 2 uprights, but I confirm you need a sacred patience (that we both have) and a sacred talent (that you have, definitely) to get such an amazing result.

Like Dan, Nick, Hannes, CC and Endeavor, what can I say? you are the best, Harvey! :worthy:

I look forward to see the final result of your build my friend...

Cheers

…...Well, maybe not the final result, but will a mid-way report do...??

After threading the retaining wire, many of the rods had either fallen out, or become misshapen by the process, so once again, I straightened by rolling under a steel ruler, then re-radiused.

Next, I put clamps on the upright joints as heat-sinks and began lacing the rods. I kept the task manageable by doing 4 at a time. By clamping before and after, the rods are secured for soldering.

I did this using the torch on its lowest flame and the tiniest morsel of solder. Then, remove clamps, clean joints with a wire brush and repeat...……..

Please excuse rubbish 1st pic.

Although it's far from perfect ( a couple of tweeks needed here and there), I'm happy with the progress so far.:D

Thank you all.

this is the most difficult part of the whole model

I must admit, it's been quite a challenge so far, but I suspect that making the tyres will be the most difficult part to recreate. I would love to cast them in rubber, but have read that it can be a very problematic process, so I think I'll probably end up doing them in resin tbh.

I constantly remind myself that this is being constructed  utilizing relatively common tools and procedures. And am in awe of that fact. Because the work has a marvelous ' hand-done', artwork quality about it. Like old-world craftsmanship - like the cars themselves.

Your ingenuity, imagination and patience is at the peak of our most talented builders. That is not to slight them, but give you the reference from which I gauge your work.

It's all been told to you already Harvey and you're not close to 'done' here yet. So expect fewer compliments because we all spent them here already and new words don't exist.  :nono:

But please - don't stop this hugely satisfying work...:worthy:

Hello everybody.

Once again, thank you all for your kind words...it means a lot!

OK then, an update on the grill.....DONE. Well, not quite. I've just noticed that I forgot the bottom row:doh: It's an easy(ish) fix, so it's not a problem, just a bit annoying.  Also, the screw-head rivets still need attaching.

Next up...back to the radiator.

More magic - you're building great satisfaction for yourself - and all of us!

I don't know if it's accurate to the prototype Harvey but that grille (not the shell) artwork is a prime candidate for chromium plating....

Thanks Mr C.  I'm getting IMMENSE pleasure from this project.

Despite some of the frustration and intensity that's often involved in a build of this nature, I find it soothing.:D

The grille would look great chromed, but not accurate to the proto, unfortunately.

I want to wish you all a Happy and healthy New Year chaps!!!

Hi chaps.

Well, another year is upon us, my friends...so let us continue.

With the new and upgraded radiator-core arriving back from the fabricators after the holidays, the rad is now completed-

I'm hoping to have the whole assembly finished and mounted this week. Then I can continue with the suspension etc. Fingers crossed!

So, that's all for now, folks!!

Thanks for watching!!

That's beautiful Harvey. You're fabricating a highly desirable object.

So very true. Harvey this has all the makings of a true 'museum piece' exactly because of the hand-crafted nature of your work. It has real 'charm', something only artifacts have that have not been assembled from prefabricated parts but that sprang from each and every piece having come from your hand.

I struggle to articulate the exact nature of what I'm thinking but this work is definitely not merely 'model building'  - but true art.  I know it when I see it and many of the rest of us do too, realize it or not.
