1/72 Airfix A-4B Skyhawk - 1st RFI (OK - you can laugh!)

Recommended Posts

OK - here is my attempt at Airfix's 1/72 A-4B Skyhawk and first posting of a completed kit in BM's RFI section... and it's only taken me 1440 posts to get there!!

I apologise in advance for the large photo size, however I'm still a numpty novice with posting images but I know with practice I'll nut this one out eventually.

The kit was built mainly OOB, however I did use a spare Fujimi 'Charlie" tank (shape was better) and a couple of Mk.83's from the Hasegawa weapons set.

Damian C from the 'Aussie Modeller International' (AMI) forum was kind enough to donate a spare set of VA-95 Green Lizard decals that I placed on both sides of the under fuse fuel tank.

Paints were Gunze Mr. Color (Colour?) lacquers all sealed in a few coats of Pledge (Kleer/Future etc.) and a small amount of Tamiya X-21 Flat Base to cut down the sheen.

A thin oil panel line wash and some very light underside streaking (that vanished after a clear coat) was all I applied to weather this kit.

I must admit, US Navy aircraft are not normally my strong suit, however this kit was a joy to build and has peaked my interest in other (mainly Vietnam era) navy birds of this era.

I'm now working on a Hasegawa A-1H Skyraider and have recently purchased Italeri's KA-6D Intruder and the Esci/Italeri A-7E Corsair. They should all make for bright and colourful builds.

Anyway - This RFI post has finally arrived mainly thanks to my 16 year old son who has been badgering me for ages to post one of my builds on BM.

It's also one small way to prove to my dear wife that I'm a little bit more than just a "Model collector" or "keyboard modeller" - how cruel!

Cheers... and I promise that the next completed kit will be posted before I reach 2880 posts !

Dave

Looks pretty good there mate. No laughs here. Nice job on Heinemann's little Scooter.

It's Mr Color. Because that's the way it's spelled.

That is a lovely looking Scooter Dave - very nicely done and that is a great touch on the drop tank.

BUT - after 1440 posts and your first RFI you then only give us 2 piccies....!!!!  It looks great on that base and is crying out for some more photos!! ;-)

The Xtradecal sheets for the A-4B offer some great looking schemes as well, well worth a punt for more Scooter builds.

Phil

Many thanks for the encouraging words there guys - truly appreciated. OK Phil, these extra piccies are for you. I'll take some underside shots tomorrow when the winter sun reappears in my part of the world.

I have seen those two Xtradecal A-4B sheets and am very tempted to build a VA-15 aircraft that also served on USS Intrepid during the same 1966 Vietnam cruise. If I see a cheap-ish kit knocking around at one of our local swap meets I'll probably grab another, athough I will be adding this to 4 other Fujimi Scooter kits already in the stash!!

Cheers and once again - thanks for the kind words... Dave

Not laughing here: that one model's more than I've finished this year and it looks fine.  Really like the "wet deck" look particularly in the first two images; you can almost imagine the damn great wave the ship's just buried her bows in and sprayed all over the place or the tropical storm that's just let go all over her.  I really wanted to have a go at this little kit 'til I saw yours; now I really really really want to have a go.  By the time I've done it I might have made 1440 posts too (must get a photo posting tutorial from someone).

Pathetically poor punctuation & proof reading.

...nope, don't get the joke!

If you want a bit of a giggle, my part-way Fujimi C ought to do the job; all you've done here is to produce a very nice piece of work that supports my conclusion about the Effix B. (Which is that I did the right thing getting the Attack Squadron conversion for it, so I can have a 1/72 'Roadrunner' without even more grief!)

Don't do yourself down, a great build!

One slight pedantic Selwyn weapons criticism, you missed the yellow HE bands off the noses of the bombs!
