Ratch's 1/72 (1/76) Napoleonics

I will list all the paints I use, starting with the groundwork. I like a mix of Winsor & Newton's Artisan water mixable oil colours. I put dabs of 074: Burnt Sienna, 076: Burnt Umber, 317: Indian Red, 422: Naples Yellow Hue, 465: Payne's Grey, 552: Raw Sienna and 744: Yellow Ochre in selected areas and used my biggest brush to merge, blend and stipple the colours into what you see. This is merely a base upon which scenic scatters will be spread.

While the base dries I have started on the British Infantry.

I wash them in warm, soapy water, put them on a kitchen towel and allow them to air-dry.

I have started painting the officer's horse. I wanted him on a chestnut/bay and chose Vallejo Model Color 139 70846 Mahogany Brown & 140 70984 Flat Brown for the horse’s under coat, then Vallejo Model Color 70872 149 Chocolate Brown for the upper coat, though all were roughly mixed and blended on the figure to have a smooth transition. The hooves are Vallejo Model Color 166 70994 Dark Grey.

Before adding ground scatters to the diorama base the farmhouse must be constructed and fixed to it. Like the other buildings in the Airfix range of forts, the Waterloo Farmhouse was designed to be easily assembled and taken apart to reduce storage space between play-battles. There are 30 components that initially look quite clean and well moulded. Closer inspection reveals that many of the locating slots are flashed over and require careful cleaning up to ensure a snug fit.

Much trial and test fitting should be undertaken before introducing glue to the parts. I decided that a partial construction would help the painting process and that the farmhouse and stables, barn and main gate could be constructed and painted separately before final assembly.

Back on the farmhouse - this is where it sits.

I have used Vallejo Model Color 163 70868 Dark Seagreen for the loft interiors

As I paint these, the closer I look, I notice things are not quite as they seem.

My next task was to dry-brush the brickwork. I used Andrea Color 1st Shadow & 2nd Shadow with Humbrol Acrylic 70 Matt Brick Red, not really mixed though the colours were allowed to blend. They were dry-brushed to allow the mortar to remain.

The next set of figures are these rather flashy Highlanders

I shall use a scalpel as best I can.

Getting the farmhouse bedded in.

I've de-flashed as well as I can and started painting the Highlanders. The plastic is repelling the white paint, but not to panic, I shall go over it again.

Humbrol Acrylic 61 Matt Flesh + 234 Dark Flesh for the skin tones
Humbrol Acrylic 160 German Camouflage Red Brown, hair
Vallejo Model Color 70.951/001 White first application, just the hose and headband, and the field of the flag.

Further colours to come:
Vallejo Model Color 48 70898 Dark Sea Blue = base of kilt
Vallejo Model Color 76 70974 Green Sky = tartan
Vallejo Model Color 70950 169 Black = bonnet, shako, boots, cockade, Military sett, cartridge pouch, shoes
Vallejo Model Color 70.951/001 White = haversack, straps, plume tip, belts, turnbacks, tufts, wings
Humbrol Acrylic 60 Matt Scarlet = jacket, dicing to bonnet band and socks, plume base
Vallejo Model Color 164 70867 Dark Bluegrey = spats
Vallejo Model Color 70871 147 Leather Brown = India Pattern musket
Humbrol Acrylic 30 Matt Dark Green = tartan
Vallejo Model Color 50 70899 Dark Prussia Blue = facings, collar, cuffs, shoulder straps
Vallejo Model Color 70801 174 Brass = India Pattern musket fittings, buckle
Vallejo Model Color 70863 179 Gunmetal Grey = India Pattern musket fittings, bayonet

Some of these may change and not necessarily in that order.

Back to the farm, various scatters have been fixed with PVA.

There are still things I want to do with this before it is finished.

This morning I popped into The Model Shop in Northampton to stock up on a few scenic materials.

45457626555_4a51922b6e_z.jpgDSC_0001 by Richard Linnell, on Flickr

The brown scatters were for the roadways and tracks and some of the trees to break up the flat base.

31431096177_547f5f24b9_b.jpgDSC_0002 by Richard Linnell, on Flickr

Holes had to be drilled in the base for the trees.

31431096457_26492d7c1d_b.jpgDSC_0003 by Richard Linnell, on Flickr

I used No Nails to fix them.

31431096267_ef0d635455_b.jpgDSC_0004 by Richard Linnell, on Flickr

A little static grass was put around the base of the trunk to bed it in.

I have started on the tartan kilts.

When painting these I try not to get too obsessive. If the line is a little thinner or thicker in places, or if it even skips a bit, so be it. Its the impression of tartan I'm after.
