Tim's Academy 1/72 Eagle as F-15I Ra'am

Recommended Posts

Joining you with this Academy F-15D kit (not the new one - I wish!)

Academy_Eagle_Box.jpg

To build as an Israeli Ra'am F-15I,  I really like that desert scheme, and magnificent Eagle on the tail.

Some of you will remember my Israeli F-16B from earlier this year, before photobucket spoiled it all.

This will be a similar DIY conversion with leftover insignias from other Eagle kits, plans from magazines.

Welcome aboard, best of luck sourcing the bits an piecies you need :)

That's the thing about this plan Stu.

I've seen pictures of these Eagles flying, and absolutely clean - so that's how I intend to build mine.

No FAST tanks, no pylons, no bombs or missiles, and flying - so no undercarriage,

all the plastic that I need is in the box.

Here are the parts

My colour instructions are from FSM and SAM.

This is what I'm aiming for:

Clean, in-flight configuration, and that magnificent Eagle on the tail.

This will be a slow start, I'm involved in other GBs.

Trawling the internet, I found these 1/32 decals

Eagle_Marking.jpg

Which I've printed onto paper at various enlagements, to compare sizewise with this

F-15_Tail.jpg

Until 27% gave me this result.

Eagle_Tail.jpg

Allowing me to paint the shape of the Eagle onto both sides.

THis is the look I'm after.

Eagle_Tail0.jpg

But painting around the black bits, just isn't going to look right.

Plan B  -  back to school,  for lessons in tracing.

1, I've got left and right side images, cut to use them back to back.

2, On one side I'll use a soft pencil to lay as much lead as possible.

3,  Lay that carefully on the tail - then use a hard and sharp pencil to transfer as much of that lead onto the model.  In the right place.

4,  See how that looks, and go over with a Sharpie pen if necessary.

See you all tomorrow!

so this is the pencil shape traced onto the tail, after trying to brush on the feathers.

followed by inked in.

and my weapons.

Eagle_Pencils.jpg

A soft HB propellig pencil, to implant the image.

A 4H pencil to press it on.

and a Wilko Fineline pen to ink over. Result.

7 full weeks and 8 weekends left.

My request for these decals https://www.scalemates.com/kits/195273-heller-80336-f-15a-b-eagle has been satisfied,

so I'll be rejoiniing with the Airfix kit.

Edit and reconsidered, other GB are about to start. This could be an Eagle too far.
