1/72 Trumpeter Vickers Wellington Mk.X

Recommended Posts

Dear fellow Britmodellers, may I present my very first Trumpeter aircraft kit!

I was pleasantly surprised by its good engineering and fit.

Since I'm no expert on the 'Wimpy' I can not comment about scale accuracy;

however, it does look like a Wellington to my eyes!

The only letdown of the kit are the decals, their colors are totally off.

The code letters and serial were replaced by (very old, but still usable) decals from the Matchbox kit.

Wing roundels and fin flash from (almost equally old) Techmod decals.

Painted with Gunze acrylics, representing a machine of RAF 150.Squadron, operating from Regina airbase in Italy, autumn 1944.

The Trumpeter kit offers a bomb bay with basic details and a cover, but no individual doors.

Since I wanted to display the bomb bay open, I purchased a CMK resin set, designed for the MPM kit.

This does not fit the Trumpeter kit, being considerably shorter.

In the end, I only used the resin doors, some of which were badly warped.

I tried to straighten them out with heat, but it only worked to a certain degree.

Wheels are resin items from Aires/Quickboost.

The bomb load was assembled from 250lb resin bombs by CMK.

Thanks for your interest, all comments are welcome.

A superb looking Wimpey.  I particularly like the application of Night to the underside.  Large areas of black can look so flat but you've managed to achieve a great sense of depth with your application.  I must say, since the Airfix Wellington announcement I'm all fired up about the type.  This just shows there are already some good kits out there.

I have a 1/48th Trumpeter Wellington III in the stash and seeing your result with its smaller stable mate is making me want to get it out and start gluing.

One thing that you might want to look at is the colour of your exhausts and collector rings: the latter were never a uniform bronze colour on the real aeroplane.  Often made of steel they started life as a uniform natural steel colour, unless painted to match the local camouflage colours (unusual).  Repeated application of hot exhaust gases discoloured the metal through a range of "metallic straw" colours, for want of a better description, to a darker metallic brown.  I had some success mixing a dark blue in with Humbrol 171 Antique Bronze to get the effect I wanted on a Tamiya Beaufighter.  The very front of the collector ring, being either double thickness metal, or a separate baffle (depending on when, where and by whom it was manufactured) discoloured much more slowly and generally appeared brighter than the main body of the ring.

There also would not be the sudden change of colour between the collector ring and the exhaust tail pipe and flame damper: again these might very well have been painted but the hot exhaust gases would also discolour these, but progressively less so as the gases cooled before leaving the flame damper.

Painted exhaust systems seem seem to have been a feature of later Beaufighters, typically a very dark metallic grey or black, but these too can exhibit discolouration even after a short period in service.

LIke Meatbox8 I can't wait for the Airfix Mk. Ic next year and the possibility that other marks will follow; 'til then yours is pretty good motivation to go find the big one in my stash...............and then wonder where the hell I'm going to park it when it's finished.

Your model is extremely good and very realistic, initially I thought it's a 1/48.

I only wonder why the bomb-aimer windows under the nose are overpainted?

Hah! You caught me red-handed ...

I forgot to pull off the masks before taking the model to my photographer!

I only realized when looking at the pictures back home ....

Hi Roman!!!

Congratulations for this wonderful build you present here!!!

I was highly impressed with the results you have obtained with this bird, and like all that you presented here. The most I like is the way how the weather looks in this nicely painted Wimpy, and how look the open bomb bay in the end, the appearance is generally wonderful and your build will invite for sure many modelers to get one and do what you have done here, seem is a kit highly buildable and the results with a little care and love will be good. When I will try my hand in one of the Wimpy kits already have, for sure you will be the first person to whom I will go for advice.

Thank you very much for sharing!!!

Cheers,

Luis Alfonso

Thanks for your feedback, Luis.

Good to hear you like it!

I invested a lot of work on the bomb bay, but will have to improve on the exhaust collector painting, as mentioned above by fellow Britmodeller Stever219.

Long distance dedications to GT City ... !

Hello Roman,

really fine looking Wimpy, good job on the painting - it looks very convincing! Those individual bomb doors must be a pain, but I guess the result was worth the effort!

Cheers

Libor
