My endless Spitfire build - ready for 2019

Recommended Posts

While I ponder how to paint the 111 Squadron plane, I've decided to start another.

No vote this time, I'm deciding what to do.

A quick trip to the loft resulted in some candidates.

One of these, using the kit markings?

20170824_173908

No, I fancy a change from KP Spitfire Vs.

How about an Eduard VIII or IX?

20170824_173936

No, I fancy something with not too many parts.

How about a Sword XIV?

20170824_175033

No, I've only just recovered from the last one.

Something a little out of the ordinary?

20170824_174137

That's reserved for the Floatplane & Flying Boat Group Build.

This is unusual too...

20170824_175001

Maybe...

A Sword PRIV?

20170824_174851

No, I've only got one in the stash and I want to do it right.

A MkXII?

20170824_174935

No, I want to do my first vacform away from prying eyes.

An unusual scheme?

20170824_174921

Those decals look like a nightmare.

How about an AZ MkVIII?

20170824_174907

That's earmarked to be a MkVII.

This is a MkVII...

20170824_174948

No!

In the end, I settled on this:

20170824_174835

something comforting, like an old pair of slippers or a pint in a pub with a log fire or... well, get the idea. I'll be doing it in one the schemes in the box.

20170824_174820

I'm leaning toward the 94 Squadron one, if I can find some photographic evidence.

Oh now you're just showing off! Makes my stash of five look pathetic... very envious :)

High altitude scheme? Nice...

I'm sort of pleased you're not doing UF-Q - it'll save all the arguments over the cowling! :mental:

My Spitfire stash is relatively modest, although what I've shown in the post isn't more than a fifth of what I have. If you're jealous, there is a solution... buy more Spitfires. 😉

Arguing over aircraft colours? But we're adults... 😄

Or clipped (Alfred Price / Revell) vs full-span (Eduard / AZ)!

For all it's faults, the Revell VB has got an easy way to do clipped or full span wings.

What are you trying to do ? Corner the market on spitfires ?

I'm an amateur, there are people here with many, many more Spitfires in their stash.

Oddly, I can use my iPad to share photographs from Flickr but not my Android telephone. How odd and annoying, I find the iPad very clunky (it always re-loads when I switch between Safari and the Flick app).

Anyway, here's the almost finished VA:

Always an issue with me.

I've realised of late that the bit under the sliding canopy should have a bit of a gap... I've been filling that too

Your canopies are always well done and that gap is probably several scale inches.😀

I've made a start with the AZ MkIX.

Sprues:

20170827_131754

Note the resin cockpit part on the right-hand side... it appears that AZ forgot to include it on the sprues, although I'm sure later molds had it in plastic.

Some paint has been applied:

20170827_134428

20170827_134435

20170827_134443

Humbrol 33 for bits that are black and as an undercoat for the wheels, undercarriage and exhausts. Colourcoats Interior Grey-green for the bits that will be Grey-green. The seat has been painted with Humbrol 160.

Also did some glueing:

I don't think I'll be doing this as MA766 because I can't find a photograph to support AZ's profile.

Now to sit outside and enjoy the weather.

Thanks for looking and don't forget to vote on which MkVB I'll be making next.

That's a very nice Va Simon  .

I like the exhaust heat colours a lot on that one. Another very tidy Spitfire for your collection.

:goodjob:

As for the vote; I quite like number 14. Nothing wrong with a bit of 'Sky' :).

For the AZ Mk IX, the 72 Sqn with red spinner and 'PAT' looks rather spiffing :thumbsup2:

Best regards

Thanks Tony, your vote has been recorded.

I quite fancy the 72 squadron Spitfire but I really wanted to make a MkIX in a different scheme (I already have one in the Desert scheme) but my searches for MkIXs in the HA scheme have proved fruitless... maybe a post in the WWII section might help.

A Because I can't be bothered to travel to Dover (where the nearest supplier of Tamiya paint is) or until I can, I've made a start with the painting of the VB using Humbrol 33.

If nothing else, it'll serve as an undercoat.

Thanks for looking.

Looks good to me Simon.

I like H33 actually... Tamiya Flat Black goes on well but it is very, er, flat. With the Humbrol you seem to get some variation and, as long as it's not a grainy pot (which needs to be thrown away) I keep mine for 'special' :)
