Duxford aircraft "crash landing"

Noticed this in the on line Daily Mail, no indication though as to which aeroplane it was.

Fortunately it sounds like the landing was good and no one hurt.

And if you look at some of the comments on that Daily Mail report, oh dear...

Thanks for the heads up on the plane, glad to see no-one injured.

I think the Mail, Express and YouTube comments are poisonous, frankly. Not nice people at all.

Re the report from that link, even the airshow image of the  line up is out of date. Note the red striped Mk XVI Spit....for example

"It was coming straight towards us" said someone trying to watch an airshow for free in a field near the runway which a display pilot may need to use for an emergency landing.

All hell would have been let loose by the press and media if the freeloader got the chop!!

according to Bedfordshire Police twitter feed, the recovery may have caused some chaos

What carnage?  Last time I checked carnage involved lots of dismembered body parts strewn all over the place in untidy and bloody disarray.  Whoever wrote that headline should be sacked for gross dereliction of duty and utter crassitude.

See it go round on it's landing circle, looked odd on the downward leg and at the end turning to land it appeared it didn't have enough room to turn onto the runway... pilot obviously gave up on trying to make the turn but was way too low and slow and see it disappear behind the green building? near the Superhanger (We were near American Air Museum) and that was that, was heartened a little as there was no smoke or flames (seen several crashes in the past unfortunately) and heard the good news the pilot was ok from a guy behind the counter in the American Air Museum

Did read engine failure but that's all conjecture, also read it's back on it's wheels in a hanger, didn't read any more as it's al third hand information so who knows

its been back on its wheels at Duxford since the day after the accident. The right wing tip is damaged as there was a concrete post hidden in the field boundary were it landed which also made it slide sideways. the prop will need replacing obviously and the canopy was jettisoned so is shattered. The engine will need to be broken down and inspected both due to the prop strike and the engine failure which caused it in the first place. Apart from that damage doesn't seem to bad.
