TonyTiger66
Hello everyone, A quick question. I just got hold of a Marivox 1/72 SAAB B-17 kit. For those unfamiliar with the type; here is the link to the English language Wikipedia entry: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_17 There is also some nice film from the Flygvapenmuseum archive in Sweden here: https://youtu.be/6rKokrXWRoU The kit is good, with an incredible number of build options and 16 different decal schemes ! I am rather a fan of Scandinavian aviation and want to start 'getting it right'. Well, as 'right' as I can. The kit has Humbrol colour call outs. I wish to make a model of one of the Danish/DANFORCE aircraft. I have some questions: Were these in the standard two tone Swedish scheme? I can't find many photographs, but it would appear so. There is the one in the Danish Technical Museum at Helsingor, of course, but as I get older I get a little careful with Museum colours. Nevertheless I would trust the Danes and Swedes to be quite thorough, a lot more than some other international museums . https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saab_17A.jpg#mw-jump-to-license If it is the same colour (or even not), the instructions callmout for Humbrol 30. Although agood all round green, when I look at these (and other Swedish) aircraft of the early 1940's, I see a more 'yellow-green", perhaps verging on khaki. Am I correct here in thinking Humbrol 30 a little questionable? Grey or blue underside? A little like the Polish Khaki on e.g. PZL P-37 Łos, but maybe a little warmer? I don't know of any model paint manufacturers that make Swedish aviation/military specific colours.. I found a build here on BM by @pabbi and it looks like he had the same colour queries as me. Also sadly his photographs have fallen foul of this terrible attempt at extortion by Photobucket. Grrr Photobucket I don't like you at all !! A good picture and some background (in Danish) here, of the Danish aircraft: http://clausalstru4.wixsite.com/danforce-bat/mindet-om-den-danske-brigade Any advice on any aspect of these DANFORCE B 17C aircraft, especially colours, would be most gratefully received. Troy Smith
the museum pic looks like standard Swedish Oliv grun (Olive green) over bla gra (blue grey) the Swedish names have umlauts etc. Humbrol 30 isnt a good match for anything except Dark Sea Green (see threads on this) as it's too blue. I can find colour calls out from different paint manufacturers in various kits, in Pilot replicas Saab J-21 kit there are call out from Tamiya XF-61 dark green and Xf-66 light grey, (I was able too look this up) and Humbrol, and other in the Special Hobby J-21R, but these are not too hand so you'll have to wait.. Antti_K
Hello Tony! I hope that You start a WIP on this kit . I built one of these years ago; in Finnish markings of course as my former boss used to fly the both aircraft Finnish Air Force had. He said the plane was terrible to fly and operate. Especially the take offs were demanding. According to my boss the SAAB B17 was how ever very good for one thing: carrying "half the squadron" around!
