Tiger331
Hi Folks, I'm just about to start painting a USN F6F-5N Hellcat nightfighter in the standard USN overall Dark Blue scheme but worry that it will be too monotone. I have read several articles etc on how to use shading, filtering etc but wondered if anyone has any anecdotal evidence on how best to reproduce this scheme with some 'interest' without going over the top. Its going to be a late-War USMC machine that operated from fairly rudimentary airstrips so there will be wear and tear but I really want to start with a nice canvas that is not simply uniform blue all over. Any ideas ? Many thanks
Drift
Do some post shading using chalks or Pastels on the different panels, and a Panel line wash also helps.
John Laidlaw
Have a look through Steve Budd's Typhoon build - he breaks up monotones by "scribbling" a couple of subtly lighter shades of the original colour, then following with some scribbles of Tamiya X-19 Smoke:

Filters can be used to adjust the shade of various panels, and oils (if expertly applied) can also change the hue of panels or parts of panels. Just have some fun with it. Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Have you ever tried black basing? This is ideal for what you're about to try. I colour in small areas at a time on top of the black base using thin paint, low pressure and minimal needle opening close in by scribbling in small circles, figure 8s etc trying to make random qualities. I just keep going like that until I've got the area painted but without that artificial monotone look. p.s. if you haven't already found out, your Hellcat was painted in ANA623 Glossy Sea Blue.
