Martian
Now that the SM.79 is finished, I have been able to turn my attention to the Roc. Three days strapped to the airbrush have seen all the main colours going on, following the Mother and father of all masking jobs! At some point or other, the entire airframe has been covered in masking tape and, despite thinking I had cleared it all away, I am still finding bits of it everywhere. Last night I found a bit in my bed and I just picked a bit off my little toe as I was typing these words! I have started applying the gloss varnish in preparation for decaling. She is a bit too tacky to move at the moment so I will put up some pictures later. At least she now stands a sporting chance of being ready for Telford, which should keep @corsaircorp happy, if not quiet: for now. Martian
The model now seems dry enough to move carefully so here are the promised pictures. These were a bit hard to take as the finish is very glossy at the moment and the sun id pouring in through the window which caused too much reflection and when I drew the curtains, the flash was needed which, guess what? Caused too much reflection! What we have is the result of much messing about with filters to get something vaguely acceptable. I am now waiting on Royal Fail to deliver some serial decals for the model. The ones I have are about thirty five years old and look a bit dodgy to my eye. Best not take a chance and get some of Xtradecal's finest in instead. Thanks for looking. Martian the Impatient 👽 21

Martian
1 hour ago, CedB said: Now that's looking very smart Thanks Ced, The pre-shading worked well on the yellow bits and I used Tamiya NATO Black tp tone down the stripes. I am not quite so happy with the upper surface colours as their darkness has tended to hide the pre-shade. I need to have a think about this as I want to have a slightly faded effect on the model in order to show a well used but well kept machine. Chipping is clearly not appropriate for this model as if one leaves uncovered metal on a machine that operates from salt water, one very soon does not have a machine at all. Actually, the very act of typing this out has given me the germ of an idea...….. Martian 👽 PS: Don't let @The Spadgent know I am adding weathering to the second model on the trot. I don't think he will be able to cope with the thought! 5

Ian Thanks Ian, though if you can get your head around the concept of a Roc target tug on floats, the colour scheme shouldn't give you much trouble. Seriously though, with this particular aircraft, it was delivered from the manufacturer directly to a maintenance unit and then prepared for service as a target tug. It seems that the Sky areas on the wings and fuselage were often over-painted as part of that process. Many Target tug Rocs seem to have had their fins and rudders left in Sky so I have left mine this way as well. Rocs were supplied with equipment to allow for a floatplane configuration, part of which was a ventral fin to aid longitudinal stability. I doubt if anyone would have bothered to repaint this part so I decided to paint it Sky. Markings on Rocs were a real dog's breakfast with widely differing styles and sizes on the fuselage. Some with and some without Royal Navy titles and some with and some without under-wing serials and/or roundels. I am working on the basis that, being prepared for it's role at an MU, at a very early stage of the war, November 1939, Air Ministry instructions would have most probably been adhered to. We have no idea as to the size of serial number but as issued to No.2 Anti ,Aircraft Co-operation Unit at Gosport the aircraft would most likely not have had the Royal Navy titles at that stage. Whether it later gained them, we just have no way of telling. The same goes for whether the aircraft later wore C type rondels on the fuselage and underwings. Given the area that the aircraft was to be operating in, it is doubtful that they would have been added just for service with 773 Squadron. This leaves us tossing a coin as to whether she had them changed prior to this. Given that we only have one decent picture of a 773 Roc and this after Bermuda had had an airfield built, I have tried to follow the sequence of service of those Roc tugs that we can be sure were operated on floats. As L3109 never operated as anything other than a tug, I have gone with a known style of scheme that follows the AM instructions so helpfully provided by @SleeperService earlier in this thread. Hope that helps. It very nearly did my head in trying to work it out! Wibble! Martian of the Hurting Brains 👽 7

Martian
The last twenty four hours or so have seen me pretty much in Wibblesville as I tried to get all the decals together to carry out the scheme I was describing in post #1239 (Have we really been wittering on that much?) I finally managed to get all the necessary decals together from the old decal bank, kit sheet and the new decals I purchased. I was sorely tempted to go for the C type roundel on the fuselage but seeing as the one picture we do have of a Bermuda Roc has an A type, I went with that in the end. Next up having decided that this model did need some weathering, I fought of my natural instinct to go for a pristine model and sprayed lightened tones of the two grey over their respective areas, followed by a light misting of the two grey in their neat state to blend it all together, thus creating a patchy and faded effect. One thing I did do which, in retrospect was not worth the effort was to spray a gas waring panel on the port wing. By this stage of the war these panels had either pretty much faded away and/or been painted over. I chipped away at the yellow of the panel and the lightly airbrushed over it. It's only possible to see if you look at the model really closely so another time I would give this a miss. Thanks for looking Martian 👽 10
Martian
Mrs Martian is very often the most useful modelling tool I have. What is the Martian blithering on about you may ask and the usual suspects most probably will. The reason is that Mrs Martian has an exceptional eye for a decent model and is in fact a much harsher judge at Scale Modelworld than I am. I often use this talent of hers as a sort of quality control at various points of my builds. Tonight was one such occasion when I asked her to see what she thought of the sun faded paint effect. She had a good look and said it looked fine but then said to me "But you don't like it do you? Its too weathered for you isn't it?" I had to admit she was right and she went on to ask why I was finishing the model in the current vogue for heavily weathered aircraft when I don't care for it and who was I building the thing for anyway? I admitted she had a point and she replied that I would be daft not to do something about it. Accordingly, the model went back to the Martian cave and the wings, which were the bits I was unhappy about were micromeshed back. I then applied a number of very thin coats of the upper surface colours until I was happy with the effect. I also took the opportunity to replace the upper wing roundels as it had been nagging away at me that the kit supplied items looked a bit too small. I was now a lot happier with model, it now looked the way I wanted. Mrs Martian is now the official wise woman at Martian Towers. The odd thing is that I was fine with the way the fading on the rest of the model had turned out. Cheered up, I then went on to unmask the canopies, attach the winch propeller and finally got to fit the beaching gear that @Ex-FAAWAFU so kindly gave me at the start of the project. There is still quite a bit to do, the guide mechanism for the towing cable and to rig the wires that protected the tail surfaces from the target cable. I also have to make the doors for the under fuselage hatch before she can be called complete. All this of course explains why I am still up at this god forsaken hour typing these words. They pictures are a bit pants but then I was pretty tired to say the least when I took them. Thanks for looking (again!). Martian 👽 12
