Navy-ating Bucc's fizz - On the deck at last

Recommended Posts

I missed your question about re-priming, Bill - apologies for that. I've been using Vallejo Grey Primer for quite some time now, and I'm very happy about it; I thin it with Future (actually, an Italian sort of equivalent acrylic floor wax, milky like as regards the aspect). This has the bonus advantage of rendering it very tough, in addition to making it easy to control through the airbrush - I usually spray one mist coat, followed by multiple thin coats, just like regular paint.

If I'm not mistaken, Vallejo primer also comes in white and in black.

I wish I had chosen all-over grey now

No way would you take the easy option Bill.

Grey S1s weren't common. 736 NAS were the main user in that scheme.

Mind you when they added the budgie to the fin they looked a bit better.

803 also had a couple but they were plain janes with just the Squadron crest on the stb intake to brighten her up.

It does look nicely different on an S1 though, but no doubt I'll stay with the one I have transfers for...

Nice pic, ta

I suppose I should take the Massimo option now and have that bay door hanging too, something to ponder after lunch mayhap...

Yes both survived.

Pilot was Andrew Gleadow and Observer was Peter King. Sorry don't know their ranks at time.

20/11/1965  XN958/111E  Buccaneer S1  800 NAS Bolted following a high approach to HMS Eagle while operating off Singapore. On leaving the deck it yawed to port and lost height. Both crew ejected at 20ft and were rescued. The yaw was possibly induced by a binding brake when the aircraft touched the deck.

More reading on incident from the pilot here: (scroll down to post 22)

Thanks for sharing this, pure magic. The man could write as well as fly. This had me chuckling. "when the Buccaneer crew ran out of height, airspeed, ideas and enthusiasm all at once."

That has been a sod of a set back on your Buccaneer Bill, I admire your perseverance. Good luck with the recovery, hopefully bang seats won't be needed.. :)

Away for a bit and drama ensues!😣 what the hell happened to that paint? It really went to a bad place didn’t it. Really glad you pushed through though Bill, she’s too good to give up on. Just imagine when she looks as beautiful as the Gannet.

I always use Tamiya light grey primer. Works well. I do use acrylic on top though.

keep on keeping on kidda.

Sanding and Milliputting goes on apace (a slowish pace, OK?) and I would like to draw attention to the picture we saw earlier

tumblr_o6k4h6IH761u7ngfoo1_1280.jpg

I wonder what the store shown on the port inner pylon is?

Is it a rocket pod or some kind of luggage carrying gubbins?

I also notice with disquiet that now I have whipped the wide band doohickeys thinking them redundant on a grey and white bird that they were all over these Buccs like a rash

On or off?

dammit now my build is compromised (as if losing all its paint and associated filling materials wasnt disruption enough  :(  )

Didn't you have a pic of the particular jet you want to model Bill - that should confirm? I thought I remembered one earlier on in the thread but I'm too lazy to look through 79 pages (don't have time either tbh, diabetes clinic in half an hour!!)

There is a picture somewhere, don't worry I can search it out but in the main I will just check the picture with the transfer sheet

Clinic is never fun, whatever it is for

I had several years attending clinic at Birmingham Accident Hospital after getting my left arm greensticked as a seven year old

Not as bad as yours but I knew that every visit would result in more manipulation pains and often replastered op sites

Yuk, old plaster of P used to stink inside

Off, there made my mind up

Off

Have a good day

Despite the tribulations, that deep clean has given you a clean slate to practice your wizardry again Bill and that prospect is a thoroughly pleasant one.

(Easy for a mere observer to say of course....)

I love that picture.

“Portrait of several loafing Flight Deck Badgers.  Oh, and 3 Buccaneers, 3 other Carriers and 5 or 6 Escorts who seem to have missed the flagship’s 90 degree port turn...”.

[P.S. when I finally get around to building my 2 Airfix 1/48 Buccaneers, I shall adopt the term “wide-band Doohickey”.  It’s not like it tells you much less about what it actually did than the official title, and it has an authentic Perdu ring to it.]
