Bandai Star Wars 1/144 Fleet

Recommended Posts

Didn't take me long to get cracking on the first build of 2018. Yes, I know the wing stripes are positioned too far back on the wing. I'm not gonna fix it now.

Needs a little bit of cleanup, and weathering will hide the rest of the sins of my sloppy paint lines.  I needed a Rogue One-style Green leader to go along with my Rogue One-style Red and Blue leader x-wings, to complete the RGB Squadron trifecta!

Base coat is AS-20 sprayed directly on the model, no primer. With the exception of the canopy color (Dark Gull Gray from a spraycan), everything else is hand painted. No airbrush, no decals.  I also got a very nice new 20/0 long liner brush that I'm going to be using a LOT more -- I masked the yellow panels on the nose and fuselage, but the yellow wing panels were painted freehand, and turned out even cleaner. As long as there's a clean panel line, the tiny long liner can get very clean lines freehand. I'm sold.

First weathering pass - starts with chipping, which is a combination of painting with a fine brush and sponging, using Duraluminum, white, and Neutral Gray. Then I do a pass with my favorite all-around acrylic dirt wash, which is simply Model Masters acrylic black wash. it's not so much black wash as it is a nasty, grimy, brown-ish dark sludge.  Perfect for Star Wars :).

next up some selective use of Citadel shades, and some weathering master streaking and heat damage.

Haven't had time to break out the softbox for some proper shots, but I took some quick iPhone shots with my new LED lighting. The lighting washes out some of the streaking and lightens up the AS-20 base coat a bit, making the ship look a little cleaner than it is.

Started another project too. Someone on the RPF took a 1:72nd Bandai Y-Wing and added a Clone Wars-style housing around it, scratch-built from styrene. https://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=260698

Since I had an F-Toys Y-Wing lying around that I don't display at all, I decided to use that as the basis for a 1:144 version.  Starts with adding some styrene struts to support the body panels.

I didn't add as extensive a framework, since it won't really be needed in the tiny scale.  The rear shaping was just done with the body panels direct:

Then it's just a matter of filling in all the panels and adding detail, bit by bit.

I'm stopping here - I like the balance point with the open engine vanes. I'm was never planning to go full Clone Wars on it, which is enclosed all the way to the end of the vanes plus more fairing between the rear fuselage and vanes. I like this halfway point.

If I can find some good greeblies to make the intakes on the top I will, but I want a really detailed part, not just some chopped up styrene.

I did a little more panel line scribing, some sanding, and called it good - I popped off the canopy and shot the rest directly with AS-20, after drilling out the mounting point to fit Bandai stands.

Well, I still haven't finished painting the covered Y-wing, but I think I've settled on a general color scheme idea, although haven't worked out the specifics yet.  In the meantime, I've been procrastinating with other projects.

I started working on the cockpit of the JPG Productions/Nicholas Sagan 1:144 scale Moldy Crow. The cockpit seats were more 1:72 scale than 1:144, so I removed them and added new ones from Shapeways in the proper scale, along with additional interior detailing.

Now that I'm happy with the cockpit, I have *another* ship I need to decide on colors for :) (probably not going with stock Moldy Crow colors. Much as I love the ship, I don't love the brown base color...)

Finally, I spent the weekend building the Vehicle Model Jedi Starfighter. Rather than attempt the insanity of masking that paint job at 1:144 scale, I bought the newly released decal set from Dannon Marsh, which worked beautifully.

I finally decided on how I want to paint the covered Y-Wing. Probably influenced by the Jedi Interceptor I just finished, and the fact that I've been collecting reference material on cruisers & corvette-class ships - I decided to go for something similar to my favorite prequel ship, the Radiant VII.

I did a quickie photoshop mock-up:

Which, of course, meant tons of masking. I laid out a fresh masking "palette" of various widths of tape (that's Aizu Micron for the pinstripe tape - great stuff! Just like Tamiya yellow tape, but it's available down to 0.2mm in width).

And the result's not bad!

Still got a bit more masking to do, as I want more red on the engine nacelles too, and then it's on to cleanup, then some additional detailing and contrast panels,  and of course, weathering.

Second round of masking, as the white engine nacelles need some more red.

And weathered:

Still need to scratch-build replacements for the front canons (they broke off early in the process - they're particularly soft on the F-toys y-wing).
